  1. >The sun had fallen long ago and yet you were still here.
  2. >Listening to the crickets chirp and the wind howl throughout the forests.
  3. >The moon raises over the forest and eccentricates the shadows all around you as you turn the next page of your small book.
  4. >Myths and their truths in Equestria. An apt title considering the wild tales caught in the books pages.
  5. >Soon after you had arrived in Equestria you had been inspired to study this magnificent land full of small talking equines.
  6. >You had even opened up a small bookstore where these Equines could buy or trade for books they wanted.
  7. >Smiling at the warm memories you take a small sip of your lukewarm coffee and you turn another page.
  8. >You had even been granted an audience with the ruler of these lands, Princess Celestia. Even without hearing tales of her majesty you were still bought to your knees by it.
  9. >Ah now this is an interesting page, the pony of Shadows banished by the Elements of Harmony and the Pillars of Harmony.
  10. >Said to be lost to time these six friends were brought back from a limbo-esque realm by the Elements.
  11. >As you place your cup back down with a small clink you realise that the forest has gone awfully quiet, no longer do the crickets chirp.
  12. >You close your book and the eerie feeling of being watched envelops you.
  13. >Even on your long hikes on earth you've never felt anything like these cold eyes upon you. Studying you.
  14. >Quickly you stand and pack up your belongings in the small carry bag you came with.
  15. >A sharp crunch not thirty metres away fills the air, disturbing the silence and bringing a horrible cold fear.
  16. >You pick up your bag and head towards the trail, now lighter crunches of twigs following you with small pauses.
  17. >Your brow becomes coated in a cold sweat and your fear mounts. You look back towards where you were just resting and you see it enveloped in shadows.
  18. >Amongst the shadows you can see the glint of white teeth and shimmering white eyes.
  19. >At this point fear has totally overwhelmed you, you begin to run for your life.
  20. >Twigs, branches and darkness all scratch at you trying to slow you down and yet you push past them struggling to run from that horrible grin.
  21. >You ran until you were out of breath, your laboured breathing and loud thumping of your own heartbeat the only sounds resounding through the forest.
  22. >Looking around you, you see that you are still a fair ways away from the exit of the forest.
  23. >All the running has taken a toll on you and you decide to sit down to rest for a moment, intently listening to the silence for anyone who would approach.
  24. >Shutting your eyes you lie down, the small brush nipping at your face as you do so.
  25. >Your breathing begins to slow down to a normal speed, and you let loose a deep sigh.
  26. >Opening your eyes you are greeted by the same smile that you saw back at the campfire and you suddenly sit up causing you to headbutt into the face of the creature.
  27. >"Ouch!" the shadow says in a husky yet strangely feminine voice, and reels back touching her snout.
  28. "Back foul creature!" You shout in fear, scrambling back away from the beast.
  29. >The shadow stops rubbing her snout and looks up at you.
  30. >"You! You're the one i've been looking for! My sunshine, my light!" she speaks, all to fervently as though you may disappear at any moment.
  31. >You continue scurrying away until you reach a large rock.
  32. >"I've been searching everywhere for you, you may not understand what you are yet to me but you will!"
  33. >The shadow grows closer and closer to you and as much as you wish to move your fear keeps you stock still.
  34. >Once the shadow reaches you it rears up on its hind hooves and...
  35. >Hugs you?
  36. >"I'msohappyI'msohappyI'msohappy." she repeats as as though a mantra.
  37. "Aren't you going to swallow my soul or something?" you ask in a daze.
  38. >"Wha-What? Of course I wouldn't silly, after all you're the one I've been waiting for!" she pauses for a moment to look you up and down. "You're a lot different from what I was expecting. Two big surprises in one day!"
  39. >She lets out a cheery giggle and smiles.
  40. >"NotthatIthinkyoulookbad!" she says quickly as though to cover any unintended offense.
  41. >Your mind scrambles to come up with a response as she continues her rambling.
  42. >"Itsjustthatyourenotlikeanythingiveseenbef-" you cut her off with a question.
  43. "So, what's your name first off? Mines Anonymous."
  44. >Her face lights up as much as a shadow can be lit.
  45. >"Anonymous is such a pretty name! I used to know someone called Haynonymous- Oh right! My name is Shakar, although ponies nowadays call me the 'Pony of Shadows' or monster or..." she trails off.
  46. >"Anyway, i'm so glad to have finally met you! I've been waiting so long for you my sunshine."
  47. "Wait a moment, why are you calling me your sunshine? And why have you been waiting for me?"
  48. >She paws at the ground visibly nervous of what is to come next.
  49. >"Well... Imayormaynotbelinkedtoyouforever." she mutters quickly.
  50. >What was that?
  51. "Excuse me what?" you say confused "What do you mean you're linked to me?"
  52. >"Well... I can't really EXPLAIN it so much as I just feel it, I just KNOW I need you." she says slightly embarrassed.
  53. "Look, I can't say I understand and I know its not everyday I get to meet a living myth but I need to get moving." you say picking up your bag and continuing to walk away.
  54. >"I'll come with you, my sunshine!"
  55. >You really don't want to explain to your neighbours why you have a living shadow at your residence.
  56. "You can't come with me. Shakar was it?"
  57. >She frowns deeply and you can almost see tears appearing on the side of her shimmering white eyes.
  58. >Oh no... She's giving you the puppy dog eyes.
  59. >You can't resist when ponies do the cute puppy dog eyes.
  60. "Fine. Come on then, but I don't want to hear any complaints about where you sleep."
  61. >The shadow mare squeals and claps her hooves together and you can't help but smile at the mare's antics.
  62. "We best get moving or else i'm going to blame you for my lack of sleep." you say as you start walking down the path.
  63.
  64. -
  65.
  66. >The moon was still high in the sky when you finally reached your small home.
  67. >Shakar was still trailing close behind babbling on about some nonsense, you had long since tuned her out on your way back.
  68. >"So that was when I met my first owl! Oh wow! You live here?" she says with eyes wide.
  69. "That I do miss Shakar." you fiddle with your keys in order to find the right one for the lock.
  70. >Ah there we are.
  71. >The key slips nicely into the lock and you open the door.
  72. >Once the door is open you reach for the light and press the switch and Shakar shrieks in response.
  73. >"Too bright, too bright." she whimpers as she hides around the corner.
  74. "Ah, sorry Shakar. Uh how are we going to do this...?" you say as you stare into the empty darkness of your home.
  75. >"I can guide you around silly! Just as long as their aren't any nasty surprises like that again..."
  76. >You nod and she walks in slowly replacing the vibrant cheer in her step with a more cautious gait.
  77. >"Just put a hoof on my withers and I'll guide you about."
  78. >You awkwardly place your hand on her back not wanting to touch anywhere too sensitive on this little horse.
  79. >It was obvious enough that you didn't have enough experience with these ponies to know where is *too sensitive*
  80. >Once you were sure enough that you wouldn't be mauled to death by this little shadow pony for being too explicit you slowly shuffled along after her.
  81. >Shakar seemed to be at home amongst the darkness, finding her way without even so much as pausing until she stopped abruptly.
  82. >"Uh Anon, I've just realised I don't know what we're searching for." she says with a tint of a chuckle in her voice.
  83. "Oh. I think I've got a light bug lantern somewhere here, it SHOULD be in the closet in the hall." you say with a laugh.
  84. >You can feel her nod and the two of you continue on into the darkness.
  85. >The two of you continue on for a few moments and then you pause once again. You were about to ask Shakar is she was alright until you heard the feint squeak of your cupboard door opening.
  86. >"Its a bit too high up for me Anon, do you mind picking me up so I can grab it?"
  87. >What could go wrong right?
  88. >You lean down and pick the small mare up and her shadowy coat licks at your face passively leaving a cool tingle in its wake.
  89. >"Just a little bit higher up! I've almost got it!" she says with slight strain in her voice.
  90. >You lift her higher and higher still and her wispy tail swats at your chest.
  91. >You really don't remember leaving the lantern that high up.
  92. >"Ah got it." she says in a cheery voice although muffled by the handle of the lantern and you bring her back down to the ground.
  93. >You rattle the light bugs awake and the room is filled with a dim light, Shakar seems not to react to it so it must be fine.
  94. "That too bright for you Shakar?" you ask just wanting to make sure.
  95. >"As long as you can see Anon its fine with me!" she says with a cute laugh.
  96. >Well that's good, now you've gotta get some rest before tomorrow.
  97. "Come along then, I need my rest and you well... Actually do you even sleep?" you say genuine curiosity lining your voice.
  98. >"Nope! So I can watch you all night!" Shakar says with a bright smile on her face as though she doesn't realise the implications of what she just said.
  99. "Right well, there's food in the fridge if you want it. I'm off to sleep." ending the sentence with a large yawn.
  100. >As you are walking towards your bedroom you hear the faint clop of hooves on the wooden floor causing you to turn around.
  101. >And Shakar is following you...
  102. "Look Shakar sweetie..." you try to come up with the words to let her understand without hurting her feelings.
  103. >"Yes Anon?" she says with that same cheery voice and bright eyes.
  104. "I need some sleep, so when I go into my bedroom, I'm expecting to have some privacy. Do you understand?"
  105. >"But Sunshine!" She pleads.
  106. >You shake your head in response and she seems to sink a bit.
  107. >"Ok... Goodnight sunshine." she says with an unusual sombre tone.
  108. >Now that that's done you amble off into your room and lie down on the bed quickly drifting into a peaceful slumber.
  109.
  110. >A strangely cool weight is beside you when you awaken, softly lapping at your skin.
  111. >In your half awake groggy state it takes you a few moments to realise what it is and you quickly open your eyes to see Shakar tightly hanging onto you her eyes in expectation.
  112. >"Morning Sunshine! I know you said you wanted your privacy but I couldn't help but want to be close to you!" she says almost unintelligible with the speed she says it with.
  113. >All you can do is furrow your brow and rub your eyes in response.
  114. >"I even got breakfast ready for you!" Shakar says cheerfully.
  115. >As though to prove a point the thick scent of delicious food wafts through the air.
  116. >"You didn't have much but I made do, cmon, cmon, try it, try it!" eagerness fills her voice and causes you to smile even with all the invasions of privacy.
  117. >As you begin to sit up you notice that all the curtains in the house are drawn shut but even still enough light to see manages to flit through the cracks allowing you to see.
  118. >The warm delicious looking bowl of oats sits on your bedside and calls for you to consume it.
  119. >Hesitantly you look over to the small mare next to you, her mane is whipping around excitedly and there is a large smile on her face as she waits expectantly.
  120. >Grabbing the bowl and forcing a spoonful into your mouth you hope that you haven't been poisoned and...
  121. >Its pretty delicious actually.
  122. >You hum in delight and Shakar lets loose a small squeal.
  123. "You did pretty good with this, where'd you learn how to cook anyway?"
  124. >"Well my previous host knew a thing or two about cooking so naturally I just picked it up from him!"
  125. >Wait what.
  126. "Wait. Your previous host? As in?" you ask sudden fear breaching your senses.
  127. >"I was latched to them, sort of like one of those things you get on the bottom of your hooves when you're walking through a swamp." she says with a laugh
  128. >"But don't worry you're not like them, I can tell that I couldn't use you, even if I wanted to my Sunshine."
  129. >"Butttt! I can do this!"
  130. >Even in the dim light you can see she melded into your shadow and you can feel a strange warmth fill your entire body.
  131. "Wha-"
  132. >Just as quick as she dived in she quickly jumped out.
  133. "So what exactly does that do?"
  134. >"It means I can head around town with you my sunshine! In the light I mean."
  135. "Well thats... Useful, I suppose."
  136. "Look as long as you're not going to leech of my lifeforce or any of my customers, i've had worse room mates..."
  137. >You quickly finish the rest of your oats and take the bowl out to the sink with Shakar following closely behind.
  138. >"So what do you have planned today?"
  139. >Well a fair few things actually...
  140. "I've got to set up the shop in a few minutes and then I've got to get some groceries at the market. After that i'm free as a bird."
  141.
  142. >She frowns slightly for a moment but its barely noticeable before she bounces back into her original cheery demeanour.
  143. >"Let's get going then!"
  144. >She says it so cheerily and with such vigour that you don't want to crush her hopes.
  145. "Fine, but no funny business. I run a professional store here and I can't have you jeopardizing my business." you say sternly.
  146. >In response she smiles and heads out the door before sheepishly returning to your side.
  147. >"I forgot I can't head into the light without you..." she says with a nervous chuckle.
  148. "And I need to get dressed." you say pointing towards your lack of clothes.
  149. >"O-oh right that too."
  150. >Slipping on your signature suit and tie you mentally prepare yourself for the day ahead.
  151. >Once you finish getting yourself ready, you breathe a deep sigh and call out to Shakar.
  152. "Shakar? I'm ready to go. Get over here."
  153. >A feint clopping of hooves can be heard through your closed bedroom door and you can see a crawling shadow slip underneath the door.
  154. >"Hey sunshine!"
  155. >You can only shake her head at her antics and you beckon her over.
  156. "Come on then, let's get moving." as you say this she melts into your shadow and you feel the familiar strange warmth.
  157. >The two of you head out the front door and towards the small bookstore down town.
