This story was made after a writefag named Frostybox posted the prompt below. Anon was raised by Luna ever since she followed a unique dream disturbance to find a bundled human baby. She was fiercely protective of her little prince, and he was very devoted to his loving mother. Anon interacted with his Aunt Celestia regularly, but at a time when peace is trying to be maintained, and threats like King Sombra had to be dealt with, they didn't bond as well as they could have. Then the Nightmare moon Incident happens, and Celestia is forced to banish her sister/Anon's mother. *** >Only now do you realize that these are the moments you cherish. >You are in the Canterlot Castle gardens; the warm air causes your skin to radiate, and there’s a tickle in your belly that makes you laugh. >Peering over your shoulder as you run, you see your mother chasing after you, calling to you in joy. >”Anon, come back here with the royal crown!” >You leap over a bush and you feel the dirt shift under your feet as you pivot and change your direction. >”It is hopeless my little prince,” she gleefully announces, “I will catch you!” >You run into the hedge maze and begin taking any of the turns that come first in the walled green; a left, a right, another left, a left, another right. >The sound of flapping makes you stop and you chide yourself for being so foolish. >”Doth thou really think you can hide from your mother this way Anon?!” >You huddle under some shade and watch as your mother flies in the sky above you. >”Give up now and thine punishment will be haste and forgiving!” >You stay crouched in the shade of the tall hedge and thumb the crown, thinking of what to do next. >You scratch your chin and lean on the hedge. >Or at least, you meant to lean on the hedge. >Instead you sink right through the green and fall to the shaded ground inside the leafed wall. >You grunt and pick yourself up of the ground before marveling at your luck. >It’s a bit strange, but this particular section of hedge is made up of branches that grew from the top and drooped down like a willow. >And as you look up, tiny dots of sun barely escape onto your face, and if you shift and look up a certain way your eyes get blinded. >it was then you started to remember all this. >You stood up and stretched your arms upward, there was enough space in here to do so, it was about the size of a closet. >As you studied the twigs on the shaded ground, you tried to remember what happened next. >From what you can recall, you were about seven or eight when this happened. >”Thou are a formidable opponent indeed!” You hear from somewhere far away from you, “but I shall find you!” >Yeah, that’s right. >You brushed the thin but numerous leafy branches that made up the entrance to your hiding spot. >This became your favorite spot for a while as a kid. >Any time you were upset, or just wanted to be left alone, you could come here and not be found. >You laugh as you study your body now. >There’s no way you could fit in your secret spot now. >For some reason you just keep getting taller and taller as the years go by. >You’re already taller than most adults, and you’re as tall as your mother, and apparently you’re still just a teenager. >You pick one of the small green leafs off of a branch and sigh as you rub its smooth skin. >This was all a pretty long time ago. >”There you are!” >You jump and turn around to see your mother grinning and sticking her head through the entrance; the branches draped around her neck. >The crown gets yanked out of your hands and it levitates towards her until it rests on top of her head. >Her horn continues to glow and you can feel the sides of your stomach being pressed in, and the small surges of shock traveling up. >And you begin laughing like crazy. “Wait! Stop! Mom!” >She keeps smiling, “thou should have refrained from taking my crown Anonymous. This is your punishment.” “I’m sorry,” you wheeze. >”Pardon, did thou speak?” “I’m sorry! Please stop tickling me!” >The tingling sensation stops and you somehow gasp for air and continue laughing at the same time. >The hedge melts away with the blink of an eye and you are now sitting in the shade of a tree. >You lean your back on its great trunk, and you watch as your mother lays down a blanket before you. >”Did thou really remember that incident so fondly?” >You nodded and wiped a tear away. “Sure do. We used to do that one a lot…” >Mom looked at you and beamed. “Well, we did when you were around anyway.” >Her soothing eyes came to you and you were drawn close. >”We miss you as well, Anonymous.” >You squeezed her tighter than you ever had before. >This time she had to be real. >It is a dream after all. >And she is your mother. >It has to be real this time. >You open your eyes and find nothing in your arms. >”Anonymous?” >You turn and see your mother staring into a wicker basket. >”Did thou want the rose or the daisy sandwich?” >You get up and slowly walk towards her, she watches you intently. “You didn’t go away.” >Mother smiles and her eyes begin to tear up. >"You've gotten so much taller," her lip quivered, "you've grown so much." >You wrap mom in another hug and hold her tight enough to make your arms feel numb. >Mom is so warm. “I’m never going to let go.” >A small sensation travels down your cheek and you feel the million soft little hairs that make up mom’s coat. >”Anonymous.” >You swallow a lump in your throat. “What is it mom?” >”We want you to know that…” >Mom lets go and turns away from you. >”We are so ashamed of our actions. Had we known that-“ “Stop.” >Mom peers over her shoulder. “It was just a mistake. I forgive you.” >”Thank you.” “I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I just want you back.” >”You, forgive us so easily?” >You walk up to her and kiss her on the cheek. “I do.” >Mom rubs her cheek and smiles with tears in her eyes. >You look at your mother and are awestruck at her beauty; her smile, the dreamy wave of her violet mane, her warm touch. >”If only our sister was as kind hearted as you.” >Then your face turns sour when you think of the one who took her away. “I don’t want to talk about her either mom.” >”Anonymous, we wish to inquire about her.” >You rub your face. “I’d rather talk to you mom.” >”Please Anonymous, this may be the only chance we truly get to meet for a," she stops and searches for her next words. >And when she finds them she hangs her head, "for a very long time." >Your heart sinks. “What does that mean?” >Mom eyes the ground, “our magic was weakened in the,” she grimaces, “in the battle with our sister. We do not have as much control over the dreaming world as we used to.” “Is that why you haven’t visited me in so long?” >She nods gravely, “we are sorry. In the first years of our banishment we were very weak. But in time some of our strength has returned,” She brushes your cheek, “but we still must use it sparingly.” >You hold her hoof, “only when it is truly important.” “I love you mom.” >She smiles, “we love you as well Anonymous.” >The wind suddenly blew in from behind her, it made a few strands of her mane fall out of place and she quickly fixed them back with her magic. >You grabbed the picnic basket and sat with your mother under the shade of the tree. >”Anonymous, we know you don’t wish to discuss our sister. But we must know some things from you.” >You sigh. “I haven’t really been all that friendly with Aunty Celestia since she sent you away. We don’t really talk all that much.” >”We wish to know if she has considered repealing my banishment.” “No I don’t think so.” >”Why is that?” “I don’t really know mom.” >”Anonymous,” she says sternly, “has our sister told you not to share any information with us?” >A shiver runs up your back when you look at your mother. >She’s scowling at you. “Are you okay mom?” >She winces and you gasp when you see that her teeth have become pointed. >”You have to free us Anonymous.” “Mom?” >”The Elements Anonymous. You have to find out how to counter act their magic.” “Why are you saying that mom?” >”Yes,” she says under her breath. >Then she pierces your heart with her narrow eyes, “help your mother Anonymous.” >You slowly back away as the pressure in your chest builds up. “What happened to you mom?” >”Our sister, your aunt, she imprisoned us. Took us away from you.” >She begins advancing towards you the way a ferocious dog would a cornered kitten. “No. She told me you were sick.” >”She lied!” “No! She wouldn’t do that!” >”Instead of trying to help us, she simply sent us away, simply got rid of us. That was a long time ago Anonymous, and what does she have to show for it?” “I…” >”Nothing. She took us away from you, and she has done nothing to try and bring us back.” “Please mom.” >”And she will continue to do nothing.” “I don’t know what you want me to do.” >”She’s simply waiting for you to forget about us.” “But, I’m never gonna forget about you.” >There was a silence then. >Nightmare Moon trembled and shut her eyes. >And your mother opened them. >”Anon?” >Those soft blue eyes looked at you again. >They were scared. >You grabbed her and wrapped yourself around her. “Mom.” >This time you really would never let go. >Suddenly you feel your mother rise into the air and your feet leave the ground. >Your grip loosens and you fall on your back with a thud that travels up your spine. >Ignoring the pain, you stand up and watch in horror as your mom ascends into the sky. >Her wings remain shut. >It soon becomes aware to you that she’s being levitated. >”Anon!” >She’s becoming smaller and smaller as she drifts away. >A ray of sunshine engulfs her form and you see the light shine off her body. >”I will always love you!” >You are in her shadow. >”And I’m sorry!” >It felt like hours. >But you watched until she was gone. >She had disappeared into the sky again. >You fall to your knees and scream into the heavens above. >It tears your throat. >Nothing happens. >You continue to scream anyway and pound on the ground with your fists. “Why?!” >Soon you would wake up. >Your eyes shoot open and you gasp. >The first thing you see is Aunty Celestia peering over you, her expression solemn. >You quickly throw the blankets off of you and rush to the window. >The moon still bears the face of Nightmare Moon. >You let your hand press on the pane, and you feel the cold air of the night on your palm. >There was a time you enjoyed that cool feeling. >”Anonymous.” “She was normal.” >You press your head on the glass. “My mother was there. I know that was her.” >”Anon, I-“ “Don’t call me that!” >You turn around and glare at her; you can feel the blood heat your face. “You aren’t her! You took her away from me!” >Celestia’s mouth hangs open, as if she wants to say something that will refute that. “You were messing with my dreams, weren’t you?!” >”Anonymous, she was-“ “Weren’t you?!” >Celestia sighed, “Yes. I forcibly removed Luna from your dreams.” >Your lip trembled and you started to choke. “But she…” “She was there. She was really there.” >”Nightmare Moon was as well.” “She left though. I got her to leave.” >Celestia regarded you gravely. “I did, right?” >She shook her head slowly, “I had to expel Nightmare Moon before performing the extraction spell. If I didn’t then she might have attacked you. Luna however, I knew was less likely to fight.” “What’s that supposed to mean?!” >”Anonymous, please stop shouting.” “Why wouldn’t my mom fight?! Doesn’t she want to see me?!” >The room died; you and Celestia stared at each other, each one afraid of making the first move. “Why did she do it Aunty?” >Celestia approached you cautiously, slow, and you both embraced. “Why wasn’t I enough for her Aunty?” >”Please don’t say that Anonymous.” >You couldn’t help it. >You wanted to be able to fit in that spot in the hedge maze again. >That secret spot that only the closest of two can know about. >You wanted to hold on to it. >To never let it go. >But your arms aren’t big enough to fit around the moon. >And no matter how tall you end up becoming, it won't be enough. >And Luna’s crown will be locked away for a thousand years. >You have no hope of stealing it again. >Celestia was gone now. >You lied in bed and tossed and turned for hours. >Why go to sleep? >You aren’t tired. >And there’s no point in dreaming anymore. >You get up and head to the window again. >The cold glass tickles your fingertips, and you wish to feel more of it. >You open the window and the air gusts in and blows back your hair. >Eyes closed, you feel the wind push your skin with its cold force, and you can hear the outside blare like a train passing by. >Your eyes open and are immediately drawn to the moon. >One thousand years. >Mom once told you that she’d live to see you die. >But that it was okay, because… >She’d be there the whole time. >That way dying wouldn’t be scary. >You look out onto the ground and see the gardens. >The hedges are long gone now. >Something about remodeling. >That secret place is truly gone. >You wonder if mom has a secret place on the moon, one like yours. >Somewhere where she can’t be found, where she can hide from Nightmare Moon. >Somewhere where she can see you. >Think about you. >Count the days in innocent anticipation. >You close your eyes and feel them tearing up. >You can’t count the days. >You can’t hide anymore. >You can’t see her anymore. >The drop from your room is over four stories. >Looking down at the ground from so high up, you’re surprised at how calm you are. >There’s no dizziness, your palms aren’t sweaty, there’s nothing. >It actually feels kind of inviting. >You lean out of the window to get a closer look. >The only time you can see mom is in your dreams. >You feel your feet leave the ground. >You just want to dream forever. >The scenario runs through your head again. >This time you stay. >Even though he is agitated by your mere presence. >Even though he truly hates you. >You stay. >”Excuse me, Princess Celestia?” >You shake your head and take a deep breath. >”Are you alright princess? We can do this some other time if you want.” >You give the scholar a nod, though not a reassuring one. “No. I’m alright.” >”Do you remember?” >You give him a weak smile. “I’m sorry, what was the question again?” >”You really ruled Equestria all alone for one thousand years?” >You swallow. “Yes.” >”Was it hard?” >You thought about it for a bit. “No. Ruling itself wasn’t hard anyway.” >The scholar scribbles something in his notebook. >Pain fills your chest and you flex a muscle in order to fight back the tears. >This time you stay. >You are a fool. >You tried too hard to convince him, to make Anon see your side of things. >But you should have known that there was no way. >That no matter what, he never would have forgiven you. >So you let it be for one night. >But you were a fool. >And you made the same mistake twice. >Ruling the kingdom was easy. >Ruling alone wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t impossible either. >But, those reasons for ruling alone, they are what haunted you. >One can be seen everywhere. >The grave is the moon. >But there is also an unmarked grave where the gardens used to be. >It’s in a secret place. >Only few know about it.
