To really understand what I mean I'm afraid I'd have to explain my history with the series. If you don't want to read all this, that's totally fine, I'll give a TL;DR at the end. I'm mostly writing this because I haven't really gone through all this coherently before, and it's nice to get it out. I was exposed to a few fan things back when I initially started watching around early 2011. Probably the most significant thing that I really enjoyed was the first Anthology which I saw around June of 2011. Still after the initial craze in 2011-2012, I mostly focused on watching the show. A big reason for this is that I am very shy, and since I had no friends in the community, I didn't engage with the fandom in a consistent way. I was also too ashamed/embarrassed to admit to anyone I knew IRL that I liked the show. This was exacerbated by the fact that I went to college in Fall of 2012 and didn't want to ruin my chance of finding a friend group. I'm not saying this was the right thing to do, it's just what I did. From around mid 2016 to late 2018 I took a break from the show (and almost everything else) because of personal reasons unrelated to the show. In 2019 I picked it back up and watched the final season as it aired. When the show ended, I was in shock feeling that this extremely special and personal thing in my life had come to an end. Even though I was never willing to admit to those around me that I watched it, MLP had always been a source of positivity and joy whenever I watched it. It literally kept me from giving in to my deep depression on many occasions. Dazed by what I perceived as the end, I took a break again until the G5 movie came out in 2021. When the G5 movie came out it kind of shook me from my stupor. I suddenly realized I was being irrational, that MLP wasn't really over, and that it would probably never be over. However, while I did enjoy the new movie, the lack of new content was fairly brutal, compared to the 1 episode every other week of the year I was used to getting. I also recognized that I was really missing FiM specifically, and that that I was actually hurt by the series ending. I knew it would be unhealthy for me to keep ignoring that, and suddenly I realized, that I could simply re-watch the series. I mean, why not? I loved it then, why not now? This led me to develop a plan to fill the void I was feeling, by simply re-watching the series starting around March of 2022, with the plan of finishing it by the time the new G5 series aired in September. Suddenly I was in the midst of an FiM extravaganza, watching an episode or two every day. It was wonderful! With it becoming a short part of my daily routine, suddenly it became much less a somewhat painful memory in the back of my mind, and more of a comforting reality that I was thinking about often. Since my wheels were turning on the subject, I suddenly realized that I still hadn't gone over the music of the series. I intended to do that in 2019, but never got around to it (side note: I am very into music). I figured the end of each season would be the perfect time to gather all the show music I liked. Once I started doing that, it reminded me of some of the old fan music that I wanted to include as well (the original Eurobeat Brony Discord song, Anthropology, etc.) and I decided since I was already in this deep, why not start exploring a bunch of fan music I'd never heard before? So, in a way, it was the fan music that opened the floodgates for me. I realized that not only could I simply re-watch the show, but I could engage with a vast pool of FiM related stuff I had never even heard or seen before. The thought was incredibly comforting, so I just dove in. I realized that even if I didn't enjoy most of it quite as much as the show, it was a hell of a lot better than nothing, and that some of it I did enjoy as much as the show (like this video!). One critical moment that stands out to me occurred about one month ago when I actually replied to someone in the comments under one of the MLP music related things I was going through. Like I said before, I extremely rarely had engaged with the community in the past. We exchanged only a few messages back and forth, but it was a pleasant exchange, and I felt a nice sense of relation that I'd never been able to feel since I don't have any friends in the fandom. I realize this must sound very ironic in the context of a show that's literally ABOUT friendship, but what can I say, except I'm a very slow learner with regard to my own feelings. Anyway, I've been commenting more and more under various videos and even on a few Equestria Daily posts and things like that. I think I'll try to be less shy from now on. Maybe I'll even admit to some people I know I like the show or even go to a con one day. I still think I've got a lot of growth to do before I can do those things, but maybe one day. :) TL;DR: After starting a full re-watch of the show, I decided to go through the soundtracks, which led me to listening to a bunch of fan music, which opened me up to trying all kinds of fan-related content. As what appears to be the top comment said, I came into the Brony fandom after the show had already ended. I've always been glad that I missed all the petty drama in the communtiy, but I can't help but feel like I missed the glory days. I'll never get to experience new episodes, or some of the most popular things in the fandom at the same time everyone else did, I came late, and there's no changing that. But just like with Starlight, going back isn't the best option. It's better to live with what we have now and move forward, and I think that's a very powerful message. In terms of everything else, the production quality is absolutely peak. The animation is fluid, smooth and appealing. Seriously, I can't imagine quite how annoying some of those shots were, especially with the camera. Speaking of the camera, the amount of interesting shots you did will definitely go underappreciated, but I definitely noticed, there's some really cool movement on display. The lighting is just.. incredible. There's not a single shot that isn't lit gorgeously, and the use of lighting for setting the tone is stellar and not something you see in most fan animations. The character models are great as well. They avoid slipping into the uncanny valley (most of the time, there are some shots that look a little off, but they're not distracting,) and the shader works very well for this style. The environments also deserve all the praise, translating the wacky style of the show into 3D is no easy deal and yet you did it, and did it very well. The voice actors/actresses also produced great work. Overall, everything about this project is polished, and fantastic. Definitely one of the best fan animations to come out of this fandom. You should have put a lot more focus into making this aspect as non strange as possible because faces are the emotional focal point for the audience. If that means re-doing your models so be it. The writing is also very clunky and character reactions are questionable. For example Starlights reaction over screwing up the door is way too dramatic given the circumstances, it comes off as overblown instead of sympathetic. That makes me not care but I should care because I'm being told a story.
