  1. Sick Day Chapter 4 by Tumultuous
  2.
  3.
  4. ---
  5.
  6. Last time on Sick Day:
  7. >Anon wakes up sick.
  8. >Wanting to help, Octavia suggests getting a castle to get a doctor to get him instantly back to 100% without all that pesky "spending time being sick" business.
  9. >Anon likes this idea, and sends Octavia.
  10. >The bitch of a doctor Panacea shows up and tries to do the magic "get well immediately" spell on Anon.
  11. >Everyone forgot that Anon is basically immune to magic, so this does nothing.
  12. >The now-exhausted doctor is sent to check over Anon's pets to see if they've caught whatever he had, with Octavia supervising her.
  13. >Somepony entered Anon's room while his back was turned.
  14.
  15. On to the story:
  16.
  17. [Viewpoint Switch]
  18. >You are Octavia, personal attendant to the Beast, the Enforcer for her Empress Nightmare Moon.
  19. >Right now, however, you're happiest about currently being the supervisor of an exhausted Panacea as she's been ordered to do a checkup on all of Anon's pets.
  20. >Part of you is wondering if the enjoyment you're getting out of being able to lord it over another pony makes you a bad pony.
  21. >A quick reminder of the treatment you usually get from much of the other castle staff is more than enough to silence that voice.
  22. >Panacea here deserves at least the same amount of bad treatment she's personally given you.
  23. >Now you have the authority to make that happen.
  24. >The fact that she's just exhausted herself with that spell makes it all the sweeter that you can make her keep working.
  25.
  26. >Now, you weren't entirely happy with how that last event turned out.
  27. >You had hoped that Anon would be cured of his cold and able to get on with his day without a hitch.
  28. >The fact that you suggested something, were told to act on it, and it failed, is something that you're a little afraid might go on some kind of record that Anon is keeping on your performance.
  29. >To be fair, it's not like there are many things in the world that are immune to magic like Anon is.
  30. >There's also the fact that his immunity to magic really hasn't come up very often in the time you've spent with him.
  31. >It's an easy thing to forget.
  32.
  33. >When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, right?
  34. >Turning the failed cure attempt into a checkup for all of Anon's pets is probably unnecessary, since he said he avoided contact with his pets when he started feeling sick, but it's still a something that you hope will help keep you in his good graces.
  35. >If this means you have to push around the good Doctor when she was exhausted and frightened, then you were willing to make the sacrifice.
  36.
  37. >Turning to the side as you begin walking to the first of the six rooms at the end of the hall Anon keeps his favoured pets in, you take a look at the pony you're chaperoning.
  38. >Panacea is definitely worse for wear, almost like she's just run a small marathon, but aside from some shaky legs, she seems like she'll be able to pull through the checkups.
  39. >Probably.
  40. >The medical satchels she's carrying seem to weigh more heavily on her than they did on the trip over, and unless you're imagining something, you think you see just a little bit of sweat around her brow.
  41.
  42. "So, it's time for you to make the rounds and checkup on every one of Lord Anonymous' slaves. Are you looking forward to it?" You say in a neutral enough tone.
  43. >"..."
  44. >She doesn't respond.
  45. >She's probably worrying about how much trouble she might get in for this.
  46. >There have been enough incidents about severe punishments being given out for what seemed like incredibly minor infractions ever since the Empress came into power, so it's very hard to tell what might get you in trouble and what would be overlooked as minor enough to be ignored.
  47. >You might have been the one who brought the failed idea up, but she's the one who was actually seen to fail.
  48. >You were also the one who salvaged the failure into making sure that the rest of his pets were healthy.
  49. >Minimizing the negatives and accentuating the positives is a skill you've had to get good at since you... started working in your new occupation.
  50. >Being an attendant, a glorified mix of assistant and maid, is something that suits you surprisingly well.
  51. >Sure, you'd like to spend more time playing your cello, and you definitely have a few issues with the food and how some of the others treat you, but you can DO something about it!
  52. >The sense of power and agency you have in this environment, if you're only smart enough to make use of it, gives you a kind of thrill that you only rarely tasted when you were trying to jockey for a good position in orchestras and win contracts to perform at galas and festivals.
