  6. “That’s the only thing you’ve said to me since your nap.”
  7. >He doesn’t give you a response.
  8. >The magic suckers were the first thing to really threaten Harvey, and you don’t think he’s comfortable being on the other side of saving.
  9. >But all the sleepers were fine and well rested.
  10. >Burning the nest seemed to have fixed the problem.
  11. >A minor, yet unsettling bump in your journey.
  12. >Assuming you really are awake right now…
  13. >In reality, you’re fairly certain you’re awake.
  14. >Your experiences with the Entity’s parasites and Harvey’s asides have left you able to tell reality from dream with ease.
  15. >But now, you have a couple dozen carts and wagons.
  16. >Most will be to carry supplies, but a couple have been made to ferry passengers.
  17. >So some of the troops can still have time off their hooves occasionally.
  18. >Then there are a couple empty frames ready to mount…
  19. >Well from dissembling the bullets from your near infinite satchel of ammo, the brass was needed to work as bindings.
  20. >But that left a lot of lead and gunpowder.
  21. >Enough to supply a couple cannons.
  22. >Nothing big, perhaps a pair or trio of three pounders- so that the pony’s dragging them don’t exhaust themselves too quickly.
  23. >But having a bit of artillery will help immensely.
  24. >Starting tomorrow, you’ll be back on the road.
  25. >Only stopping so Harvey can harvest enough metal to make your cannons.

  28. >You arrive to an area south of Canterlot, down the mountain along a rail line.
  29. >The trip was about twenty minutes by train.
  30. >But, there is a nice expanse of grassland and forest on a fairly flat surface.
  31. >Hills and mountains still within easy reach.
  32. >And the Canterlot workforce will be close by.
  33. “So, we’ll need to create a station here, but I think it should work as a final construction yard and testing ground.”
  34. >Sergeant Workhorse Fabricator, or as you call him: ‘Tinkerer’ steps out of the train car to follow you.
  35. >”It could work, but it would be a massive undertaking.”
  36. “Most of the other work can be dealt with in Canterlot. I’ve purchased multiple ruined city blocks to set up the beginning and intermediate steps. Also the weapon’s factory for my first order can be solely in Canterlot.”
  37. >Muharak then steps out of the train car after Tinkerer.
  38. >”I believe this area should work perfectly. If we can reach the final stage.”
  39. “It will…”
  40. >You then look over to the Sergeant.
  41. “Starting now, you’ll be state funded. But, if events allow to expand operations beyond sole military uses, you’ll be head of the new… company.”
  42. >”I will?”
  43. “Workhorse Fabrications. Once Tartarus is beaten back, you’ll be able to start expanding to civilian products. Profits and operations at that point will be for you to deal with, but if Equestria needs something…”
  44. >”You’re naming it after my name?”
  45. “Because that’s clearly the most important thing I just said.”
  46. >”If I knew that I’d become ordered to become a businesspony, I’m not sure I would have signed up.”
  47. “Imagine how many more lives will be saved by taking one pony off the frontlines in exchange for the quality of weapon I have in mind.”
  48. >“I know, it’s just unexpected.”
  49. “Now, I want you to search for anyone you might need on your team. Workers can be found, but if you need any more minds working with you, we’ll get you whoever and whatever you need.”

  52. >The men are encamped past the forest, you’re currently into the mountains.
  53. >Following the river south, you have a relatively flat path through the rough terrain.
  54. >The wagons are filled with grass, and other supplies you’ve managed to forage.
  55. >Now, you’re waiting for Harvey to finish his work on your cannons.
  56. >Here in this dark ravine between cliffs…
  57. >It leaves you on edge.
  58. >You’ve seen some of what these mountains house.
  59. >And you’re not sure what lies under the waters of the river.
  60. >Nothing good.
  61. >That’s for sur-
  62. >Something heavy rustles your hair.
  63. >The trunk then brushes across your face.
  64. “Hannibal… hey buddy.”
  65. >The elephant continues to seek attention.
  66. >You turn to face him.
  67. “Sorry, don’t have any apples… do elephants eat apples?”
  68. >You bat his trunk away from your face.
  69. “I’m sure you’d like one. Or a dozen.”
  70. >Hannibal tries lifts his trunk up again to rustle your hair.
  71. >Once he’s done, you brush your hand against it to make sure it’s standing down.
  72. “Just have to get the last word in…”
  73. >He trumpets to get the last word in.
  74. >You just nod in response.
  75. >The elephant won.
  76. >This round…
  77. >You swear that Hannibal is pretty damn intelligent.
  78. >He decides to walk off in triumph, and the bastard looks pretty smug.

  80. >Not sure how an elephant can look smug as he’s walking away, but he pulled it off pretty well.
  81. >Are you sure you’re not asleep right now?
  82. >You reach your left thumb up and bite the tip of it.
  83. >Yeah, you’re pretty sure this is your life now.
  84. >This last year has been more of an upheaval than your first year in Equestria.
  85. >At least you know how to fight and lead people now though.
  86. >But even though you have less bullshitting to do, the year has still been wild.

  88. >Here and now, despite the constant threats from your surroundings, you feel a sense of wonder.

  97. “What can I do for you? A one way ticket back to Equestria is out of the question.”
  98. >”What? No, not that. There’s still this background… energy. A magical aura. Not quite pure chaos, more of a malevolence- just uncontrolled anger and madness.”
  99. “Would you like a bedtime story?”

  101. “Your parents never told you a story to help you sleep at night?”
  102. >”Not really.”
  103. “I was going to make a joke about all my stories being about war and killing, but that’s just sad.”
  104. >”Well what I was going to say, is that maybe your friend can use it as a power source.”
  105. “You think Harv can absorb the background magic?”
  106. >”I said maybe.”
  107. “Well it’s at least worth a try.”

  110. >You set down onto the city outskirts, pulling the cloak tighter around your body.
  111. >The cloak is something you ‘borrowed’ from a small town’s bar.
  112. >When you were at that village, you were almost overwhelmed.
  113. >The ponies around you…
  114. >You could sense them.
  115. >Before you even set hoof inside the bar, you knew how many people were inside.
  116. >You knew where they were sitting.
  117. >And you knew who they were.
  118. >Now that you’re on the outskirts of a major city- you can already feel the souls within.
  119. >Like on some level, you’re still connected to the crystal’s vision of the world.
  120. >But back in that village…
  121. >You could feel that there was more to one of the patrons of the bar.
  122. >He was a changeling.
  123. >One of the remnants.
  124. >He didn’t want to cause harm- he just wanted to survive now that all of the queens in Equestria have been killed.
  125. >Here…
  126. >You know that a changeling is here.
  127. >Not just any changeling though…
  128. >Night.
  129. >Somewhere out there, he’s planning his next step.
  130. >Watching and learning about the intended targets.
  131. >It’s on you to stop him.
  132. >You just need to drown out everypony else…

  135. >With your horribly named soldier now working on your project, you returned to the Palace in Canterlot.
  136. >With Tinker getting his funding and manpower, you expect preliminary results soon.
  137. >But, after sending word for Offense to join you, you went to the Throne Room.
  138. >It’s been cleaned up since last you saw, but the hole in the wall you made with a Royal Guard is still being patched up.
  139. >At least your wait for the Brigadier isn’t long.
  140. >He soon enters from the double doors at the end of the room.
  141. >The General is in full uniform, but you can see that his left wing is completely bandaged.
  142. >That’s good, it means he didn’t have to lose it.
  143. >You can’t say the same for his eye.
  144. >A large eye patch covers his left eye.
  145. >And as he approaches, you can see he’s limping.
  146. “How are you doing?”
  147. >”I’ve been better.”
  148. >Once he reaches the foot of the throne, he speaks again.
  149. >”Why is it always the left one? Is there not a single pony in this army that had their right eye injured?”
  150. “Is it painful?”
  151. >”You and Anon just got scars over yours, but I lose mine. And that’s what hurts.”
  152. >Good to see he’s coping.
  153. “Did you hear about Wave?”
  154. >”His kid was… I’d rather not think about it.”
  155.  
  156. “Well how’s Lancer?”
  157. >”Still breathing. Barely.”
  158. >The doctors aren’t sure how long he’ll be comatose.
  159. >Or if he’ll come out of it.
  160. “Feeling ready to get back into-“
  161. >”Yes.”
  162. “Good.”
  163. >You grab onto a small wooden box you had brought in.
  164. “Catch.”
  165. >Tossing it to Offense, he reaches out his right hoof to catch it.
  166. >However he failed to reach the hoof out far enough.
  167. >You grab it with magic before it hits the ground.
  168. >”Sorry. Vision is still adjusting.”
  169. >Placing the box into his hoof, he flips it open.
  170. >Then looks back up at you.
  171. >”What’s this?”
  172. “Lancer is unresponsive, Wave is off the grid, and Arrow is still adjusting to his position. Like it or not, you’re the ranking Army officer.”
  173. >”I…”
  174. >He starts to protest, but soon sighs.
  175. >”I understand.”
  176. >Reaching out with your magic once again, you focus on the items in the case.
  177. >One at a time, you place an additional star on each shoulder of his uniform.
  178. “Congratulations, Major General.”
  179. >”So what happens now?”
  180.  
  181. >You get up from the throne and walk down to Offense.
  182. “Brairheart and Tiara will deal with most of the smaller details. In broad terms, with more divisions reinforcing the armies, there’s been a minor shift in what regions of Equestria are protected by who. The 1st remains in the heartlands, ready to move out. The 2nd remains in the west and southwest. The 3rd is going to be focused on the northwest, leaving the 5th to take over the south and southeast. The 4th is still over in the north and northeast, with a division reinforcing the Crystal Empire and it’s militia.”
  183. >”And the training and reserve divisions are still spread pretty equally.”
  184. “Right. I guess we should-“
  185. >He’s cut off as a familiar pegasi bursts into the throne room.
  186. >”Princess!”
  187. >It’s Call…
  188. “You better have a damn good reason for not tracking down Night right now!”
  189. >”News from out west! The bison are saying that tribes further west are under attack, the descriptions they offered make it sound like Tartarus.”
  190. >A brief moment of rest, then they rear their ugly heads again.
  191. “EVERY SINGLE TIME!”
  192. >Did…
  193. “Sorry, I said that out loud. Somepony get Brairheart. And Call… get out there and find Night!”

  196. >You kick open the door to Brairheart’s room.
  197. “Admiral!”
  198. >A voice yells from the bathroom, the door left open.
  199. >”I’m bathing!”
  200. >You walk over to the open door, and enter.
  201. >Offense follows closely behind.
  202. >And he can’t help but giggle at the sight.
  203. >”You could have at least knocked!”
  204. >Brairheart is laying in a bubble bath, and pulls more suds towards the portion of his body that’s sticking out of the water.
  205. “Get up.”
  206. >”Just give me a minute.”
  207. >You light up your horn and start to mess with the handles.
  208. >A moment later, you open up the shower’s tap to let out cold water.
  209. >You then leave the bathroom as Braitheart rushes to the tap.
  210. >Offense follows after laughing for a bit.
  211. >Glaring at the General, you speak in a stern tone:
  212. “What’s so funny?”
  213. >”Right.”
  214. >He then stops grinning.
  215. “That was quick. Usually you can’t keep your face together that easily.”
  216. >”Eye jokes. That’s a low hanging fruit.”
  217. “Still hanging higher than your eye.”
  218. >”Okay, I set myself up for that one.”
  219. >Soon, Brairheart exits the bathroom with a towel draped over his body.
  220. >”To what do I owe the pleasure?”
  221. “The Bison say there might be a Tartarus incursion out west. Dry yourself off and get dressed.”
  222. >”You could have just said so.”
  223. “Yes, I could have.”
  224.  
  225. >…
  226. >Harvey holds his arms out.
  227. >”Nothing.”
  228. “Don’t give me that.”
  229. >”I feel the background magic, but I can’t do anything with it.”
  230. “You’re a lost cause.”
  231. >”I built you four cannons!”
  232. >They’ve been mounted to the frames and each are now being pulled by two earth ponies.
  233. >He also fashioned a few dozen proper cannon balls and some cases of grapeshot.
  234. >You continue to walk through the ravine as your group follows behind.
  235. “So what’s at the end of the mountains?”
  236. >”A few other rivers will feed into this one. Once we get to the end, the next mystery box has another boat because you’d be following the river south for some time.”
  237. “I don’t think we can all fit into a single boat.”
  238. >”Which is why I’m going to sap the engine of power to build a barge large enough to carry us all.”
  239. “And how long will we be on the river?”
  240. >”A few weeks. Past that, you’ll have to choose from a few options of how to proceed.”
  241. “Those would be?”
  242. >”We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
  243. “You don’t get to cliché me.”
  244. >”You know Anon, I quite like the turn this voyage has taken.”
  245. >Harvey changes the topic.
  246. >”This is actually quite refreshing. You, me, and a band of three hundred against the unknown.”
  247. “Well I’m glad one of us is enjoying this.”
  248. >”Oh you love it too. I’ve been in your head- don’t lie. Being out here, not bound to status and bearing the weight of a nation- this is a vacation.”

  250. >Well, he’s right.
  251. >You took most of your vacations in the Everfree.
  252. >But Flurry’s life wasn’t at stake those times.
  253. “One of these days…”
  254. >”Oh take a moment to stop and smell the… rocks. It’s beautiful out here.”

  257. “Now.”
  258. >Once again, you use the lounge as a meeting room.
  259. “Moving armies so far out west will be difficult. From the 1st army, I’ll be taking the 5th infantry and 101st airborne. Once we hit Fort Expanse, the 33rd division will split from the 2nd army to join the expeditionary force. The 21st and 51st logistic divisions will need to work overtime to keep supply lines up. If necessary, additional divisions from the 2nd army will join us.”
  260. >Offense then speaks:
  261. >”I’ll get word out and have the trains set up.”
  262. >You then look to Brairheart.
  263. “How long until the Prydwen’s sister ship is ready?”
  264. >”Still a month or two.”
  265. “I’d rather not take her so far from Equestira until then.”
  266. >”Well the Air Fleet still isn’t quite a fleet again. But given the shift towards chariots housing grenadiers or unicorns, we’ve been able to repurpose several of the old style airships that were under construction into mobile air bases to house them.”
  267. “Carrier. The word you’re looking for is carrier.”
  268. >”Yes, I suppose. No matter what you call them, I can assign one old style airship and three repurposed ones. Each of the ‘carriers’ houses two dozen chariots of each type.”
  269. >Combined with the ten thousand pegasi of the 101st, air supremacy will be pretty solid.
  270. “Well see to it.”
  271. >”We’ll see to it.”

  274. >You stand watching the late afternoon light shine over the valley below Canterlot.
  275. “Can you feel it?”
  276. >Ambassador Blunt Force responds in jest.
  277. >”A cool and brisk wind. Reminds me of home.”
  278. “No… it’s much greater than that. Each and every attack from Tartarus so far has been nothing but a bookmark in the greater battle.”
  279. >”My people could have been destroyed by the sundering.”
  280. “But that was one attack. If it hadn’t been dealt with, it may have threatened your people as a whole. Now that the focus has mainly been on Equestria, there’s been one attack after another in a timely fashion. Sure, there might have been some overlap, but most of it was directed at my people.”
  281. >”Well quit stealing out apocalypse.”
  282. “I fear for the day that a full scale attack occurs across Equestria and our neighbors. We can stop a single pit, or a few concurrent pits, but if multiple ruptures form across the world… I’m not sure.”
  283. >”My people have always been warriors. But yours? In recent years, yours have become soldiers. If any people can repel and defeat Tartarus, I’d say yours are the second most likely to endure.”
  284. “And who are the first?”
  285. >”My own, of course.”
  286. “Heh.”

  288. >Force is a patriot at the end of the day.
  289. “Well you better hope that a generation born into war can overcome the coming storm.”
  290. >”There was a time where I’d say if Anonymous was leading your people, it would be without doubt. Now that he’s gone. And now that I’ve seen you take up his mantle… maybe. Hopefully.”
  291. “Anon reformed warfare. By the time I’m done, I’ll have revolutionized it.”
  292. >”Tell me that once we’ve-“
  293. >Force stops as the door to the balcony opens.
  294. >You turn to face the noise.
  295. >Starlight is standing with a few unicorns of the Old Guard behind her.
  296. >One of them is levitating a magic amplifying crystal in the distance.
  297. “Et tu Glimmer?”
  298. >”What?”
  299. “What’s this about?”
  300. >”… Some people are worried about you. They want-“
  301. “Someponies think I’m under the parasite’s influence.”
  302. >”Yes. They want me to check you out.”
  303. “Then by all means. Lead the way.”
  304. >You won’t hold this against whoever voiced reservations.
  305. >They don’t know what your new era entails.

  308. “Well. Before we met in the Changeling hive, I can’t say that I knew any of you personally. But each and every one of you has proven yourself. Even if I had to rescue you after the hive’s trap. This road is a hard one, but we’ll get through it. So take tonight, and rest well.”
  309. >You’d guess Harvey is right.
  310. >To some extent.
  311. >Being out here is…
  312. >Liberating.
  313. “I mean it. I could have come out here with the most hardened veterans I’ve ever known. But you’ve exceeded the expectations I’d have held them to. I swear to each and every one of you- I’ll make sure you get home.”
  314. >But they’ve been gone for decades or more.
  315. “Or at least what remains of home. If there’s nothing left, I’ll make sure you have a new home waiting for you. Because if even if you’ve had your time stolen, that won’t stop you from getting what you’ve earned.”
  316. >While you see content faces from most of the group, Harvey opens his mouth:
  317. >”Well my time is precious.”
  318. >You point over to him:
  319. “Harv, you’re on thin ice.”
  320. >”Well at least entertain me.”
  321. “You’re Mister Illusion. Why don’t you?”
  322. >A guitar materializes- hovering in front of you.
  323. >”They miss the radio.”
  324. >Grabbing the instrument, you actually get a grasp on it.
  325. >Then you strum the strings.
  326. “You all hear that?”
  327. >The others nod.
  328. “Been a while.”
  329. >You test out a few chords.
  330. “Want a song?”
  331. >One of the men yells over to you:
  332. >”Sing!”
  333. >Alright.
  334. >After clearing your throat, you strum a bit and begin.
  335. “Almost heaven, West Virginia…”
  336.

  338. >After a long hour of Starlight scanning you with magic, she pauses.
  339. “Happy?”
  340. >She just looks at you with an unsure face.
  341. “I’m not infected- you would have been able to see that after a minute or two. What’s wrong?”
  342. >”Well… you’ve been regaining your magical abilities at a far greater rate than is possible. The feats you’ve exhibited are-“
  343. “What do you mean? Going from barely able to open a door to turning a mountainside to glass seems like a reasonable step to recovery.”
  344. >”That’s…”
  345. >She’s terrified at your joke.
  346. “Okay, that was in poor taste. What’s the problem?”
  347. >”It’s…”
  348. “Now you’re starting to spook me. What’s wrong?”
  349. >”I can think of two answers to the phenomena.”
  350. >You wait for her to continue.
  351. “Well?”
  352. >”When you were an infant, your magical abilities would fluctuate with your emotional state. The parasites also seem to draw power and influence from emotions- primarily the more negative ones. I’m not sure whether the parasites simply awakened something within you… or in defeating the parasite, you adopted that ability.”
  353. “I’m not sure I follow completely.”
  354. >”Do you want me to be succinct?”
  355. “Do you need to ask?”
  356. >”As far as I can tell, you magical prowess is directly influenced by your negative emotional state.”
  357. “I’m literally fueled by anger?”
  358. >”I wouldn’t put it that way, but yes. You could say that.”
  359. “And that’s a problem… why?”
  360. >”I-“
  361.  
  362. “Sorry, let me explain myself. Worst case, I adopted some ability of the parasites. If so, I can use that against them should the time come- meanwhile, I can use it to protect Equestria from Tartarus. On the other hoof, this has always been a part of me. And if so, it only proves who I am and was meant to be- the Princess of War.”
  363. >”The Princess of War isn’t the baby I knew so long ago. It’s not the child I knew, and it isn’t even the young adult I knew.”
  364. “What does Equestria need? An infant, or a leader?”
  365. >”Does Equestria need a leader who goes against her own nature?”
  366. “This isn’t the old days. Tartarus can’t be beaten by friendship and love- only be iron and blood.”
  367. >”I’m just saying that if you lose yourself to conflict, what separates you from Celestia?”
  368. “Fear. The parasite amplified her uncertainty of the future. I don’t fear Tartarus- I respect the threat it poses, but I am not ruled by that threat. Beyond my own abilities, and that of my subordinates, I trust in the will and strength of our people to overcome Tartarus. If we stand united, then this enemy and all future ones will be dispatched: and there is no limit to the heights we can achieve.”
  369. >”Are you trying to convince me or yourself?”

  371. >”Flurry. Don’t lose yourself- remember who you are. Who you really are.”

  374. >You’ve survived in Fillydelphia in the parks and allies.
  375. >’Borrowing’ some food from open markets when necessary.
  376. >All of the voices- they aren’t really voices though.
  377. >You can sense the ponies around you.
  378. >Who they are and what defines them.
  379. >It isn’t voices you hear, it’s the souls you can feel.
  380. >But now that you’ve been able to narrow the souls, you’ve been following a mare leading a pair of children to school.
  381. >Who do you follow now?
  382. >The children, or the mother and the baby she’s carrying…
  383. >Night could attempt to kill either duo.
  384. >He’s not close, but you could choose to protect only half of the people.
  385. >Do you help the mother and baby?
  386. >Or do you protect the seven year old colt and stallion- the two who don’t know it yet, but care for each other more than just childhood friends do.
  387. >Either way, family of one will be at risk.
  388. >But, only by protecting the two children will two families have a guardian and survive past this generation.
  389. >Are you to-
  390. >Somepony familiar is near.
  391. >And that pony is-
  392. >Too near.
  393. >You jump back, narrowly avoiding a punch towards your skull.
  394. >Instead, the pony hits the building you were standing against, his hoof blooding against the bricks.
  395. >Turning towards the pony, you begin the struggle.
  396. >He thinks you’re-
  397. >You jump back to avoid a jab, then block another swipe with your own left hoof.
  398. >He’s-
  399. >You move your neck and head to the side to avoid a headbutt.
  400. >Then respond with a hook into the pony’s head.
  401. >While he’s stunned, you press the advantage to grasp the pony and thrust him to the wall of the building the fight has erupted against.
  402.  
  403. “If I was who you think I am, why would I choose this form?”
  404. >”I can think of-“
  405. >You have to block a kick back towards your back knees.
  406. “You saw what he did in Ponyville. And you’ve heard what happened to other Old Guard families south of it. Now you’re thinking big again- he hit your family and command. But with the increased guard with the family in Ponyville and in the Palace, he won’t strike again soon. He’ll hit the family of command outside of those cities- and Brairheart’s family is here, Offense’s daughter is here. Think about it.”
  407. >You pause.
  408. “If I was Night, why would I choose Thunder’s from- and why would I try to hide that form with a cloak Why would I, Wave?”
  409. >”Because you-“
  410. >He attempts to strike you again, but you knew he was going to, and blocked the kick.
  411. “Wave. I’m on your side. Both of our families are gone- taken from us. I won’t take your desire for revenge against the changeling from you. But you need to trust me- even if it’s for the first time you’ve really trusted me.”
  412. >”How do you know I never really trusted you?”
  413. >You press your foreleg against his neck.
  414. “Because it isn’t trust you value. It’s duty towards your own ideals. With nothing left to lose, you only have hopes. No matter what you think of me, I want to stop Night- and you want to hope I can help you stop Night.”
  415. >You step back from his throat.
  416. >”Maybe I believe you…”
  417. >That’s a start.
  418.  
  419. “Ponies are watching.”

  821. >As you continue to press north, you pass by the side of a crate that was left leaning against the wall- startling the rat which was sleeping in the shelter.
  822. >It runs back to the south, away from your hushed hoofsteps.
  823. >Keep moving forward.
  824. >You’re getting closer.
  825. >One false step will alert the changeling.
  826. >He could teleport away easily if he wanted to.
  827. >But does he want to?
  828. >His vendetta isn’t against you personally, but you survived being left for dead in Tartarus…
  829.  
  830. >As you reach the north side of the room, you look over to Wave opposite you.
  831. >Between you lies the door to the ground level offices.
  832. >In front of yourself are stairs leading to the second and later third floor.
  833. >You nod to Wave, both of you understanding the plan.
  834. >He’ll enter from here and work his way up.
  835. >While you go to the third floor and work your way down.
  836. >Nearing the stairs, you glance into the first level windows.
  837. >Then give an all clear signal to Wave, who indicates that he doesn’t see anything from his angle.
  838. >Just empty desks and filing cabinets on the other side.
  839. >Halfway up the first flight of steps, you look down through the metal mesh the stairs and balconies are made of.
  840. >Wave pushes open the door and enters, leaving you alone once again.
  841. >Turning your attention to the second floor, you peer into the next set of windows.
  842. >A peek shows the facility’s break room, a few dusty coffee cups remain alongside an old deck of cards and discarded magazines.
  843. >The couches in there look pretty battered, any workers probably spent most of their time in there.
  844. >Not much else to do in a warehouse of decommissioned weapons and armor.
  845. >Rounding the corner, you start the climb to the next level.
  846. >You can see that the windows on the top level are covered by interior blinds.
  847. >The door itself has ‘foreman’s office’ engraved upon it.
  848. >He’s here.
  849. >You can feel it.
  850. >You know it.
  851. >And evidently, Night knows that you’re here.
  852. >The doorknob lights up with a green aura before opening inward.
  853. >”Is it really you, Thunder?”
  854.  
  855. >You step into the room, turning left to face the foreman’s desk.
  856. >Night stands in front of the desk, not as a changeling- as the ‘Captain’ you once trusted.
  857. >”I heard you found a way out of Tartarus, but hardly believed it. Even after I peeked into your cell in Canterlot. How did you survive?”
  858. “I didn’t.”
  859. >”So you’re a specter come to haunt me? How quaint.”
  860. “So, are you going to teleport away again?”
  861. >”Not this time.”
  862. “Pin me to the wall with your magic?”
  863. >”Too simple… let’s settle this equally. But first tell me: how did you know where to find me?”
  864. “Because I know every step you’ll take. Each move you make and every idea you have, I can sense.”
  865. >You take a step towards him.
  866. “Drop the façade. If you want to fight one on one, at least show yourself.”
  867. >While Night reverts to a changeling, you take another step forward.
  868. >One more and he’ll make his move.
  869. >”That doesn’t answer my question.”
  870. “I don’t have to answer your questions. All you need to know is that-“
  871. >You step forward, then he springs forward.
  872. >A knife shoots from behind his body and into his right hoof.
  873. >Parrying his weapon away with your left hoof, you jab your right into his shoulder.
  874. >As the dagger falls to the ground, you then jab your right elbow into his jaw.
  875. “I knew you had the knife on the table.”
  876. >In that moment, beyond the anger and malevolence, you could then feel something else.
  877. >Fear.
  878.  
  879. >”What are you?”
  880. >You shoulder rush Night, smashing him against the desk.
  881. >Then his horn lights up.
  882. >A beam of energy pushes you back lifting you off your hooves and against the opposite wall.
  883. >You break a small table and end up lying on your back in the splinters.
  884. >After deciding to not fight fairly, the changeling then flies over to you.
  885. >Landing atop you, he lunges his fangs into the base of your right shoulder near the neck.
  886. >You grab one of the shattered legs of the table with your left hoof and swing it against his head.
  887. >As he staggers to the side, his fangs tear through your flesh.
  888. >But with him off of you, you force yourself up.
  889. >Dropping the improvised weapon, you stand face to face with Night.
  890. >Despite the injury to your shoulder, you punch forward with a right hook to his jaw.
  891. >Then as he recoils, a jab to his snout with your left hoof forces him back further.
  892. >But having to put pressure on your right hoof then caused a pause in the attack.
  893. >While you limp and put pressure on your wound, Night takes his opportunity.
  894. >He blasts you with another barrage of magic- sending you flying out of the still open door.
  895. >While you are sent clear of the balcony’s guard rail, you’re thrown into the metal scaffolding.
  896. >Bruising your wing from the impact, you can barely slow your descent as you tumble down into an empty crate three stories down.
  897. >Lying in a pile of wood, straw, and blood, you try to stand back up.
  898. >Barely managing to get back on your hooves, Night flutters down to face you.
  899. >”I’ll finish the job myself this time. You can’t stop me, Thunder.”
  900. “No. But he can.”
  901. >A small knife is thrown into the changeling’s abdomen.
  902.  
  903. >While Night winces in pain, he uses his magic to pull the weapon free.
  904. >Then looks up to who threw it.
  905. >He smirks towards Wave, who’s standing on the second floor’s balcony.
  906. >”Of course you brought a friend. I’ll make…”
  907. >Night then stumbles, having trouble standing.
  908. >Then lets out a shrill scream.
  909. >It lasts only a moment before he falls to the ground.
  910. >Eyes still open, darting around.
  911. >Clearly in pain, but unable to move.
  912. >Wave then speaks to you as he descends the stairs.
  913. >”Manticore venom. He’ll be completely immobilized as the blood in his veins boils.”
  914. >Approaching you, the General notices your shoulder.
  915. >”Will you be okay?”
  916. “I think.”
  917. >”Then if you’ll excuse me.”
  918. >Wave pulls another knife from his cloak, and sets it on the ground next to Night.
  919. >He then pulls yet another out.
  920. >One looks incredibly sharp, while the other has been dulled…
  921. “Goodbye Night…”
  922. >He has no idea what Wave intends to do.
  923. >And you’d rather not see it.
  924. >Limping towards the offices, Wave speaks to the limp changeling.
  925. >”An interesting toxin, isn’t it. Complete immobilization, but it leaves all pain receptors intact- amplifies them even.”
  926. >The last thing you hear before exiting the storage floor is Wave whispering to Night:
  927. >”You butchered my son then wore his face in front of me. I saw the body. I can do much worse, but enough words. Actions speak much louder.”
  928. >As you shut the door, you can’t help but wonder that even after all Night has done, if he deserves what’s about to happen.
  929.  
  930. >…
  931. >Brairheart’s fleet detachment wasn’t at Expanse when you arrived, so you continued on anyway.
  932. >They’ll head for Appleoosa and be there soon enough.
  933. >But just as the sun rose overhead, you got word that the town would soon be in sight.
  934. >So after donning your armor, you flew outside of the train and landed atop it.
  935. >But instead of seeing a familiar silhouette of the quiet town, you were met with multiple plumes of smoke.
  936. >You flew ahead alone.
  937. >But as you landed, you weren’t met with a city in ruins.
  938. >Instead, beside the trains lined up on the rail line leading back to Equestrian heartlands, you were met with ponies.
  939. >Ponies and bison, dragging the bodies of countless Tartarus spawn being dragged towards mass graves.
  940. >You can see bodies of beasts, ponies, and bison all still lying in the streets and the surrounding land.
  941. >But for every pony body lies a dozen bestial corpses.
  942. >But you aren’t met with solders.
  943. >This cleansing of Appleoosa is left to civilians you can recognize by face, assisted by bison.
  944. >While the ponies look towards your appearance with awe, you wonder…
  945. >What happened to the 7th division?
  946. >Though the locals remain star struck, a familiar bison approaches you:
  947. >”You have matured…”
  948. “Chief Thunderhooves.”
  949. >”I doubted, but you did save my tribe.”
  950. >So many bison in the town.
  951. >Thunderhooves himself.
  952. >What’s happened here…
  953. >You need to be in control of the situation.
  954. “Is the town secure?”
  955. >”For now. You warriors marched with the sun.”
  956. >He points west southwest.
  957. >”Beyond out new camp. Their leader insisted my own warriors remain with the militia here.”
  958. “Are you sure?”
  959. >”Indeed.”
  960. “We’ll have time to reminisce later.”
  961.  
  962. >…
  963. >A brisk flight leads you over the forgotten bison camp, and towards a hill overlooking a wide plain.
  964. >In the far distance a great hoard of Tartarus beasts charge forward.
  965. >Upon the hill itself a dozen light cannons stand ready.
  966. >Beyond them, a trench has been dug out with ponies standing ready with bows and crossbows.
  967. >Between them, unicorns shoot magical projectiles into the sky.
  968. >They explode at a high altitude, leaving arcane sparks falling to the ground like the snowflakes from the first frost of the winter.
  969. >The defending men are far less than what the 7th division set out with.
  970. >Barely a third…
  971. >How did they even have the time to make such a long trench?
  972. >Well, it looks like you’ll have an answer.
  973. >Because beside the cannons in the rear, a few ponies are standing.
  974. >Just watching the enemy approaching.
  975. >And there are hundred- no, thousands of beasts charging forward.
  976. >They can’t hope to repel the enemy with the thin defensive line they have.
  977. >It’s not even a proper line, it’s two.
  978. >A hundred yards separate the trenches lined up against the onslaught.
  979. >The entire center of the formation is empty, only leaving the few cannons on the hill to support it.
  980. >If their CO is dead, you need to take charge.
  981. >If the CO is alive, you still need to take charge.
  982. >So you set down upon the few ponies standing to the south of the cannons- figuring what’s left of command will be there.
  983. >You see a pegasi with his officer’s jacket speaking to a few other pegasi, unicorns, and earth ponies.
  984. >”Excellent. Is the-“
  985. >The runner he’s speaking to nods in your direction.
  986. >Then he takes notice.
  987. >”Ah, Princess. It’s an honor.”
  988. >He salutes.
  989. >But instead of the usual hoof over the eyebrow salute, his is at a sharper angle pointing more toward the sky.
  990. >”Colonel Whirlwind Comet of the 7th.”
  991.  
  992. >While his short yet well-kept mane is a golden color, his coat is rather unusual.
  993. >His torso and limbs up until the joints between lower legs is a pale olive.
  994. >But Comet’s coat on his head and the lower parts of his limbs are a light cream color.
  995. >Additionally, he attest to being the colonel of the division.
  996. >Indicating that he was the initial commander.
  997. “What are you doing! The line are too overextended!”
  998. >”Ah yes, it must appear that. Please, join me your highness.”
  999. >He must have a death wish, or be mad.
  1000. >Because his tone is incredibly nonchalant.
  1001. >”Please. You might be intrigued a the magical display in sight.”
  1002. >You step forward while reprimanding the soldier:
  1003. “You’re outnumbered!”
  1004. >”Exactly”
  1005. “What?”
  1006. >”Canterlot research indicates that the enemy sense magic as easily as we can see a battlefield. Which is why I’ve had out unicorns blanket the field with arcane signals.”
  1007. >The ‘snow’ you’re seeing?
  1008. >”A fortunate timing. If we hadn’t been sent out when we were, Appleoosa would have been devoured ruin. But at the current task- one moment.”
  1009. >He looks over to the cannons.
  1010. >”Fire!”
  1011. >Fairly indiscriminately, one gun fires.
  1012. >Then after a pause the next goes off.
  1013. >And so on until the small array has gone through its salvo.
  1014. >Barely a dent was made in the Tartaran hoard.
  1015. >They’re still charging towards the ‘lines’ without pause.
  1016. >”Thankfully, you decided to send professionals to the frontier. The buffalo and local militia were barely holding before we charged from the train.”
  1017. >The enemy lines are-
  1018. >”Archers.”
  1019. >He doesn’t bother yelling.
  1020. >A unicorn just shoots a blue flare forward- prompting a wave of arrows and bolts from the trenches to fire forward.
  1021. >While the soaring projectiles wound many beasts, almost none are killed from the salvo.
  1022. “What are you doing! Everypony will be overrun!”
  1023. >The Colonel doesn’t respond to you.
  1024.  
  1025. >As you glance over, you see his eyes fixed on the battlefield.
  1026. “What the he-“
  1027. >”NOW!”
  1028. >Another unicorn shoots out a red flare high over the field.
  1029. >The brightness of the light is almost blinding.
  1030. >But it soars far past the charging enemy.
  1031. >Then whilst the flare’s light still emanates in the air, the flat plains before the trenches dissipate.
  1032. >A veil is lifted as before each line, a shallow incline of grass disappears.
  1033. >The incline is filled with earth ponies wielding pikes.
  1034. >Three ranks of spears then lift towards the enemy, over allied shoulders to fill gaps.
  1035. >Behind them are another three ranks of infantry, swords at the ready to stop the enemy charge.
  1036. >The wall forms just as the charging lines would impact this primary line of defense.
  1037. >While beast bodies clash against the pike wall, arrows and bolts fire a wide volley deep into the enemy lines.
  1038. >And the cannons fire towards the center of the charge.
  1039. >The center lied between the disparate defensive lines.
  1040. >But while the magical illusion hid a proper defensive formation on the flanks, the center was lined with unicorns.
  1041. >Who shot out bolts and waves of arcane of energy- injuring and paralyzing the beasts
  1042. >Behind that rank of unicorns were a legion of heavy infantry, who took their change.
  1043. >From the unveiled center, thousands of soldiers charged forwards.
  1044. >”Signal the next phase.”
  1045. >A unicorn shoots a flare directly into the sky.
  1046. >While you watch the soldiers of the 7th push forward, their charge cutting straight through the hoard.
  1047. >And as you watch the column of men tear through the enemy, you can’t see a single pony fall in battle.
  1048. >Despite responding beasts pressing against the spearhead, the men cut down any opposition.
  1049. >And while the main focus of the attack goes forward, the infantry behind the main pike lines move forward.
  1050.  
  1051. >The main advance took enough focus off of the charge itself to snowball forward.
  1052. >However while the schwerpunkt pushed far forwards, the flanks only make slow advancements.
  1053. >Your focus shifts with every blink of the eye.
  1054. >But with every new focus, when any solder is rebuffed or wounded, two men behind him take up the advance.
  1055. >The men on the field seem to be able to kill dozens of beasts on their own.
  1056. >Despite being only a fraction of their size…
  1057. >You’ve seen the opposite results in previous battles.
  1058. >These men are even more effective than grenadiers.
  1059. >Then…
  1060. >Then you see what the last flare was signaling.
  1061. >From the south, countless wings are in the air.
  1062. >The pegasi split into two.
  1063. >One wave charges into the enemy on the south side of the main push.
  1064. >The fliers who kept moving though…
  1065. >They take places over the north flank before dropping a barrage of grenades and arrows.
  1066. >And only then do they decide to dive towards the survivors.
  1067. >This is the first army.
  1068. >Anon’s men.
  1069. “So this is what the 7th has to offer.”
  1070.  
  1071. >”I intended to take another hundred miles, but the enemy numbers required a special touch.”
  1072. “The initial orders didn’t call for your division to be sent out.”
  1073. >”Oh…”
  1074. >Comet pauses.
  1075. >”So I’ll be reassigned?”
  1076. >You can see the end of the beast lines.
  1077. >Between the maneuver and the fighting strength of the men, they’ll be mopped up quickly.
  1078. “You left Canterlot in an instant with all your men.”
  1079. >”Fired then. Don’t let the men suffer for it. Think of it as my last request.”
  1080. “How many men died so far?”
  1081. >”From the 7th, two hundred from arriving in Appleoosa. Fifty- no. Sixty in this battle.”
  1082. >In a purely defensive situation thousands died under your command.
  1083. >”A hundred and twenty one the mop up is finished. Thirty maybe.
  1084. “How would you like a promotion?”
  1085. >”Never.”
  1086. >An immediate response.
  1087. “What if it wasn’t an offer?”
  1088. >”No.”
  1089. >He looks over to you.
  1090. >Light blue eyes looking into yours.
  1091. >”Execute me if you will, but I won’t leave my men.”
  1092.  
  1093. >…
  1094. >”Your ability to discern languages incredible.”
  1095. >”Ponies would call it by ‘special talent’ or some other.”
  1096. >Harvey continues to talk with Professor Fortitude.
  1097. >He could be doing something productive, but even a part of Discord seems to derail him.
  1098. >”From a single march or two, I dare say I’ve never seen such ability.”
  1099. >”Coming from an aspect of chaos, I’ll take that as a compliment.”
  1100. >”How far does it go?”
  1101. >”What do you mean?”
  1102. >”MaaaaaAAAaaa”
  1103. >”What?”
  1104. >”Baaa. BaAAa. Maaa’AAa.”
  1105. >Damnit.
  1106. >That’s enough.
  1107. “Harv, you’re just making sheep noises.”

  1111. >He stops, and you entertain him for a moment- stopping the caravan behind you.
  1112. >Harvey then cracks his not really existent fingers, then produces a folk ensemble of strings.

  1178. “But it is. Now apologize to the Finnish.”

  1182. >You budge your eyes open.
  1183. >”Thunder!”
  1184. “Wha- what?”
  1185. >”It’s time.”
  1186. >You look over to the bedside clock.
  1187. “It’s three in the morning, that leaves at least three hours of sleep left.”
  1188. >”No… it’s time.”
  1189. “Time, time?”
  1190. >”Yes, that time.”
  1191. >You sit up in bed and look to Winter.
  1192. >It’s time.
  1193. >This is the day you’re going to be a father.
  1194. >You’re not sure you’re ready for it.
  1195. “Are you sure?”
  1196. >She puts a hoof on the bump in her stomach.
  1197. >”Well someone certainly is.”
  1198. >This is it-
  1199. >-
  1200. >”Thunder.”
  1201. “Yeah… let’s get to the hospital.”
  1202. >”No time, I had a medic check you out. You’ll live.”
  1203. >Winter’s voice sounds incredibly masculine.
  1204. >As you open your eyes, you sit up from the bed-
  1205. >No, you’re on a bench.
  1206. >On a moving train.
  1207. >As you rise up, the first thing you see on the table in front of you is a decapitated head.
  1208. >A changeling’s head.
  1209. >The right eye is gouged out.
  1210. >And it comes back to you.
  1211. >Wave sits across the table.
  1212. “Night?”
  1213. >”What’s let of him.”
  1214. “Did you have to leave him facing me?”
  1215. >”You didn’t object.”
  1216. >But you feel… lightheaded.
  1217. >Blood loss, you think.
  1218. >At least your wounds have been patched up.
  1219. “We’re on a train.”
  1220. >”Bound for Canterlot. With this diversion out of the way, we can get back to work.”
  1221.  
  1222. >The train car is empty.
  1223. >Aside from Wave, yourself, and Night’s head.
  1224. “I don’t know what strings you had to pull with what ponies, but are you sure you’re ready to just go back to work?”
  1225. >”The changeling that killed hundreds of soldiers and dozens of civilians is dead. Yes, it’s time to go back to work.”
  1226. >That’s a lie.
  1227. >”He killed my son. Now that they’re both dead, my job is all I have left.”
  1228. “Did I ask that out loud?”
  1229. >”You did.”
  1230. “Sorry. You can’t imagine what it’s like to… feel everything around you.”
  1231. >”Thunder. I’m not a pony of many words.”
  1232. “You have plenty of words, you just keep most of them to yourself.”
  1233. >Wave pauses, unable to deny it.
  1234. >”From what I’ve seen, this crystal affair seems to be true. And as it is, you know well that now my only duty in life is to serve.”
  1235. “It is, but the weight of your son’s loss won’t leave you.”
  1236. >”And your wife’s loss won’t leave you.”
  1237. “That’s… fair.”
  1238. >”For both of us, this war transcends mere duty. Meaning we’re bound to see it to the end, one way or another.”
  1239. “You think that I can just go back to my position… like none of this has happened.”
  1240. >”I entertained the idea of hanging you as a deserter. But I now know that would be a gross misuse of your unique… talent. You know more than any other what awaits us if Equestria falls.”

  1242. >”Then you desert again.”
  1243. “And you hang me?”
  1244. >”Something like that.”
  1245. >You chuckle before pausing.
  1246. >Taking a look out the window at the passing landscape, you then look back to Wave.
  1247. >The wounds you took were pretty deep.
  1248. “You didn’t even take me to a hospital?”
  1249.  
  1250. >…
  1251. >While the 7th focused on pressing forward into the plains and pressing the battle lines, you returned to Appleoosa.
  1252. >The trains have arrived, and hundreds of soldiers poured forward.
  1253. >You yelled at them, making the troops secure the town and form lines around it.
  1254. >To support the 7th.
  1255. >Soon the officers approached you.
  1256. >When a few had gathered, you decided to brief them.
  1257. “Well, it looks like Colonel Comet decided to take initiative. The 7th defended against the beasts, and pressed them back. We need to get soldiers and supply lines forward to them. Because I don’t think the enemy are going to let us gather out strength here.”
  1258. >You pause.
  1259. “Now, the town is small, so we need to keep the rail lines open. Supply is of the utmost importance, and-“
  1260. >A pegasi sets down beside you, and speaks:
  1261. >”Ma’am, the Colonel sent me out to give out status report. When I left, the vanguard of the division had gotten twenty miles away from the battlefield.”
  1262. “Twenty? I’ve been gone less than an hour!”
  1263. >”Maybe twenty-five, he apologized for the small amount of gained land. But, the enemy have grown in number. The forces are moving forward, but they need more troops to reinforce the flanks of the push.”
  1264. >The madman had his soldiers push forward at over a mile every two minutes.
  1265. >In full armor…
  1266. “Alright soldiers! You heard the stallion, the 7th division is over twenty miles outside of town! Are you going to let them alone make all of the gains against these creatures!”
  1267. >You look over to the messenger and whisper:
  1268. “The 7th left their encampment like it was a ghost town, now you’re leaving your battle line like it’s been abandoned for a year. Tell the Colonel if you all die, it’s not my fault.”

  1271. >Manifest Destiny stands before you.
  1272. “It’s been a long time…”
  1273. >”Only a few months for me.”
  1274. “Almost a lifetime for me.”
  1275. >You look to Appleoosa’s mayor.
  1276. >”How have you been?”
  1277. “Well… yes.”
  1278. >”That busy?”
  1279. “Look on the bright side. It looks like Equestrians might actually end up marching towards the sea you wanted them to reach.”
  1280. >”I hoped for better circumstances.”
  1281. “Well, the engineers will be placing rail down as we march. One way or another, Equestria marches west.”
  1282. >”You’ve spent hours speaking to soldiers, I would say that you… well it looks like despite all the officers and messengers you’ve had to deal with, you have some friends waiting to speak to you.”
  1283. >What?
  1284. >Looking to the direction she nods in, you can see the girls standing behind you.
  1285. “Oh. Sorry I kind of flew out on you all.”
  1286. >The mayor then speaks to you again:
  1287. >”I kept your room undisturbed. Go ahead, it looks like you could use some rest.”
  1288. >You nod at Destiny, an unspoken thanks for what she’s done.
  1289. >Then you look to the girls.
  1290. >Blueberry is the first to speak:
  1291. >”Does that mean we get a sleepover?”
  1292. >Leaf then tries to put her in her place:
  1293. >”We’re on the march, there are only encampments. Not sleepovers.”
  1294. “There was a couch and a couple chairs in my room. It used to be a lounge before I got exiled here. I’d think there’s enough room for the five of you, and it’s inside instead of out here in the chill- you’d prefer to be indoors. At this time of year, the plains get pretty cold in the fall.”

  1296. >”Then it’s settled! We have an evening at Flurry’s.”

  1298. >You then hear an unexpected voice speak out to you:
  1299. >”Could I do your hair?”
  1300. >All eyes are on Ruby.
  1301. >She looks puzzled.
  1302. >”Did I…”
  1303. “Yes, that was out loud.”
  1304. >”Well- all I meant was that with all of those curls in your mane, it causes a lot of drag… If they could be straightened out, you would be a lot faster when flying…”

  1306. >Merry Weather then speaks
  1307. >”I don’t think that’s what you meant.”
  1308. >”Of course it was. Blueberry’s known me longer, she can tell.”
  1309. >Blueberry then responds:
  1310. >”Will you do my hair too?”
  1311. >”No! I-… Sarge?”
  1312. >Autumn Leaf then replies:
  1313. >”Don’t drag me into this.”
  1314. >Sunshine then defuses the situation:
  1315. >”It is pretty cool right now. It would be nice to get some rest in the warmth.”

  1319. >A single snowflake enters your vision- floating to the ground, it gently dances with the breeze.
  1320. >Rendered clearly, it swirls in the night’s sky- brightly illuminated by the moon and stars.
  1321. >Driven back upwards by a slight gust, the sight brings you back to much simpler times.
  1322. >More so, a simple and innocent crystal soaring on the wind heralds the fact you’ve been on the campaign for almost three months.
  1323. >Skirmishing through boundless hills and plains, only broken by the odd stream or isolated patch of tress.
  1324. >Wading through seas of grass over twice your height.
  1325. >Harassed by packs of Tartaran Spawn, their hoards having scattered to the winds.
  1326. >As if the beasts learned that they cannot face your divisions on the open field of battle.
  1327. >Instead the skulk through the grass, striking at the supply lines and encamped soldiers while they rest.
  1328. >Isolating watchponies or raiding tents in the night.
  1329. >Sometimes they attack in force, mainly to defend the pits from whence they came.
  1330. >Vile creatures.
  1331. >As if a bulldog, crocodile, and some primordial monster were fused together.
  1332. >Swarming out of tunnels bored straight though the ground from the darkest corners of Tartarus.
  1333. >But most, if not all, of the pits out here have been eradicated.
  1334. >The army has pushed out far and wide, fanning from Appleoosa they’ve erected forts and been laying rail lines.
  1335.  
  1336. >Reports indicate the force stretches from dark and foreboding forests in the north, to scorched and blistering deserts in the south.
  1337. >Despite any danger, Equestria lives and marches on.
  1338. >Bolstered by tribes of plains Bison along the way.
  1339. >And while the civilians overjoyed to seek safety behind the lines, their warriors are eager to avenge the fallen.
  1340. >Now you stand at the edge of the endless.
  1341. >The plains have finally given way to what appears to be equally endless peaks of snowcapped mountains.
  1342. >Here you stand at the precipice of a small bluff overlooking an enormous valley.
  1343. >At the mountain’s edge, a relatively narrow pass is the only path forward.
  1344. >Narrow in the grand sense, the path is maybe two hundred and fifty to three hundred feet wide.
  1345. >From the bluff you stand atop, the valley slopes gently downwards, perhaps a thousand yards separate you from the rocks and cliffs ahead.
  1346. >At the pass, torches sparkle and war drums beat.
  1347. >Bison warriors stand shoulder to shoulder.
  1348. >Battered and beaten for how long?
  1349. >From the bluff, there are maybe a hundred yards of clearing.
  1350. >But then each and every inch is covered by the Tartaran beasts, packed together all the way to the pass.
  1351. >Pushing against the defenders, the vast hoard presses and presses, both on the ground and attempting to scale the jagged rocks in order to somewhat flank the Bison.
  1352.  
  1353. >After you’ve inspected the field, you glance to your left.
  1354. >Cannons have been rolled into position.
  1355. >Same on the right.
  1356. “FIRE!”
  1357. >Firing through the night, the muzzle flash of thirty cannons and howitzers illuminates the hoard.
  1358. >The shots tear through enemy lines, and although hundreds of the beasts must have been felled, it’s merely a drop in the ocean of bodies.
  1359. >Steel, not lead, will win the day.
  1360. >When the guns go quiet, unicorns shoot off magical flares high into the night’s sky- flooding the field with as much light as the midday’s sun.
  1361. >But, the enemy have shifted much of their focus: the rear ranks start to turn and charge up the incline.
  1362. >You glance back to see your force.
  1363. >Thousands of men from the 1st Army stand at the ready- soldiers that through war after war, earned their position in the forces Field Marshal Anonymous commanded personally.
  1364. >They’re supplemented by many more from the 2nd Army and Bison volunteers.
  1365. >It’s been a long road, but now the end is in sight.
  1366. “The first stallion to reach the Bison’s line will earn a month of leave for their platoon! Now show no quarter, for none can be expected in turn!”
  1367. >You draw your own sword, and look back to the oncoming hoard.
  1368. “For Equestria! CHARGE!”
  1369. >The cannon will fire again.
  1370. >Lines will crash.
  1371. >Magic will tear into the enemy.
  1372. >Pegasi will shatter their lances against the beasts.
  1373. >The day will be won.
  1374. >But the war will still have no end in sight.
  1375. >At least, not tonight.
  1376.  
  1377. >…
  1378. >You stand on the wall, overlooking the horizon.
  1379. >The view from the Canterlot’s Palace is always striking.
  1380. >Although a decaying changeling’s head accompanies you, impaled on a spike nearby.
  1381. >General Wave insists that it stays up.
  1382. >You never did get the changeling’s name though.
  1383. >If it even had one.
  1384. >Captain Night was only an impersonation.
  1385. >Either way, his treachery killed thousands of soldiers.
  1386. >And too many civilians.
  1387. >You don’t remember much about what happened after you and Wave fought the changeling.
  1388. >So much of your blood was lost, that you lost consciousness soon after the encounter.
  1389. >Supposedly Wave dragged both you and what was left of ‘Night’ to the nearest army base.
  1390. >After that, you had to spend a lot of time in bed as the cracked bones healed.
  1391. >Still though, you-
  1392. >“Thunder!”
  1393. >At least you can still fly.
  1394. >”General Offense.”
  1395. >He’s healed about as much as he can from the bomb that ‘Night’ planted.
  1396. >The eye patch over his left eye doesn’t hide all of the scars on that side of his face.
  1397. >And while his left wing isn’t bandaged anymore- it’s notably smaller.
  1398. >The explosion ripped the tip off and his feathers are now so thin that they barely cover the appendage.
  1399. >”You’re up! Here I was thinking that you were content to just lay back and read your way to the end of the war.”
  1400. >Always the source of levity.
  1401. “I needed some air.”
  1402. >”But here you are- visiting him.”
  1403. >Offense nods to the impaled head.
  1404. “He’s been dead for months but…”
  1405. >The feathers on your wings shudder at the though.
  1406. “I can still… feel the sheer hatred he had.”
  1407. >”Hm.”
  1408. >Offense ponders for a moment.
  1409. >He’s unsure.
  1410.  
  1411. >Doesn’t know what to make of the situation.
  1412. >Your communion with the crystal confuses him.
  1413. >”I always knew that someday we’d have to fight ghost changelings.”
  1414. “That is… not what I meant.”
  1415. >He places a hoof on your shoulder.
  1416. >”How are you?”
  1417. “I’m… yes…”
  1418. >”Ha ha! And would that be a ‘yeah, I guess’ or a nice ‘yes sir!’”
  1419. “Sure.”
  1420. >”Good man.”
  1421. “I know something’s on your mind. What is it?”
  1422. >Offense nods for you to start walking alongside him.
  1423. >”And did your magic crystal sense tell you that?”
  1424. “No, it’s just rather obvious.”
  1425. >”Look Thunder, your desertion was for a good reason. And if not for that changeling, we’d probably have had many different conversations.”
  1426. >Though you’ve only moved a few paces, he stops to face you.
  1427. >”The Old Guard needs a commander. The Old Guard needs THEIR commander. You can come back, if you want.”
  1428. “I don’t know.”
  1429. “What else would you do?”
  1430. “It’s just… there are these moments. Where everything is laid out perfectly, and I know exactly what I need to do. What has to be done and why. But other times- it’s murky. I can’t tell if I-“
  1431. >”Thunder!”
  1432. >Offense interrupts you.
  1433. >”I know that even without that crystal, you’ve been really messed up mentally. But not knowing is how we all are- how you used to be. The only way to know an outcome it to take action, and second guessing gets you nowhere.”
  1434. >The General pauses.
  1435. >”I know that you’re still in there. The stallion that led those soldiers into Tartarus wasn’t a broken shell or some crystalline-mad mystic. Come back to us… Major.”
  1436. “I need some time to think.”
  1437. >”Well at least think on your hooves. We’re heading out to a training camp. It’s time to inspect some of our soon-to-be soldiers, and I’d like you to join me.”
  1438. “And I sense that’s an order.”
  1439. >He pats your shoulder.
  1440. >”Whatever would give you that idea?”
  1441.  
  1442. >…
  1443. >The plan worked, to an extent.
  1444. >As your barge collides with the land, you’re the first to set foot onto the dry land.
  1445. >You’re not sure if this sea is inland, or if it has some outlet to the ocean.
  1446. >But the water was still.
  1447. >Perfectly still the entire time.
  1448. >You’ve only managed to arrive on this new shore through the power of pegasi or griffons taking shifts pushing the boat, and a few makeshift oars.
  1449. >The only silver lining to the voyage was the safety.
  1450. >For once in this hemisphere, you didn’t have to face constant threat of local fauna.
  1451. >But now you find yourself in a sparse forest.
  1452. >Fairly cool, but still fairly temperate.
  1453. >The landscape has its hills, but everything should be easy enough to traverse.
  1454. >However, there’s more out there.
  1455. >There always is.
  1456. >Looking back to the barge, you address the group:
  1457. “Well don’t just stand there all day. Vacation’s over.”
  1458. >As the ponies, griffons, and minotaurs start making their way off, Harvey makes his way over to you.
  1459.  
  1460. >Still opting to take the form of a human in a brown pinstripe suit, his yellow and red eyes inspect the landscape.
  1461. >He stands next to you, but just stares at the horizon in bewilderment.
  1462. “What’s wrong Harv?”
  1463. >”This should be desert.”
  1464. “Well it doesn’t feel like sand beneath my boot.”
  1465. >”This is all wrong. I know for a fact that this was supposed to be desert! Vampire cactuses and all!”
  1466. “Look you could be- wait, vampire cactuses?”
  1467. >”Because they suck the blood out of anything that runs into them.”
  1468. >You’re not sure what you expected…
  1469. “Look, you never scouted these paths. That was Discord proper. You might just be remembering something wrong.”
  1470. >Discord’s fragmented personality then looks at you.
  1471. >”When I put this part of me in your head, I made sure that everything I- Discord- knew about this continent was included. You should be ankle deep in sand right now.”
  1472. >You nod down to your ankles.
  1473. “It’s not like it’s that strange for the terrain to shift dramatically over here.”
  1474. >”Let’s just say we should be extra wary here.”
  1475. “That we can agree on… it’s almost too peaceful.”
  1476. >”So…”
  1477. “What?”
  1478. >”Stay frosty.”
  1479. >When he was in your head, he watched way too many memories of movies.
  1480. >With a sigh, you leave his side and go back to the others.
  1481.  
  1482. >You let out a shrill whistle directed at Geoffrey and Arctic Breeze.
  1483. >It prompts the griffon and pegasi to quickly fly over to you.
  1484. “Gather the fliers and begin scouting.”
  1485. >Breeze nods in compliance, but Geoff quips:
  1486. >”Not like our wings are tired from having to push this pile of driftwood across an ocean…”
  1487. “Well if we’re not hoofing it, we’re back on that pile of driftwood. And you won’t be getting any breaks then.”
  1488. >”I don’t doubt that…”
  1489. “Now hustle.”
  1490. >You watch as Hannibal then trots off of the barge.
  1491. >The elephant seems happy to have actual ground underneath him.
  1492. >While he goes off to graze a bit, you focus back to the ship’s ramp onto the shore.
  1493. “Come on people! Get those cannons out here!”
  1494. >Why are they all just standing around.
  1495. >Grassy Fields is the only one to break the silence.
  1496. >The unicorn is looking behind you.
  1497. >”What is that?”
  1498. >As you look over your shoulder, you see a broad wave of magenta energy coming from further inland.
  1499. >You then shout:
  1500. “Brace! Unicorns, make a-“
  1501. >You stop yourself as the magical wave overtakes you.
  1502. >While you’re immune to magic, the others aren’t.
  1503. >Thankfully, everyone is still here.
  1504. >You can’t see him, but you hear Rusty yell out:
  1505. >”What just happened!”
  1506. >Yelling back to the minotaur, you start to notice something…
  1507. “I don’t know… Oh that’s just great.”
  1508. >”What?”
  1509. >You approach the closest pony and begin to wave a hand in front of his eyes.
  1510. >Nothing.
  1511. >Glancing to the sky, you can see Geoff and Breeze frozen in the air.
  1512. “Alright, who’s still moving!”
  1513.  
  1514. >…
  1515. >A dozen minotaurs join you outside the barge.
  1516. >You watch as one of them taps the shoulder of a pony.
  1517. >As his finger makes contact, a magenta aura lights up around the equine.
  1518. >Bronze Fortitude strokes his beard.
  1519. >”A stasis field of some kind.”
  1520. >You look over to see Harvey stuck with a finger in his ear.
  1521. >How did he even get frozen.
  1522. >He doesn’t have an actual body.
  1523. “We’re the only ones left. Magic doesn’t work on me, so that’s why I’m here. Hannibal is an animal, and the birds haven’t been frozen either. But what about you lot?”
  1524. >The minotaurs are the only ones unaffected.
  1525. >Rusty takes the question a bit differently:
  1526. >”We’re not animals.”
  1527. >Professor Fortitude then retorts:
  1528. >”Very astute.”
  1529. >”So what do we do?”
  1530. “Well, you guys are going to stay here and watch the others. I’m going to go find who or whatever cast the spell and… well you can probably guess.”
  1531. >”What do you mean we’re staying here!”
  1532. “I’m immune to magic, and even though this spell didn’t work on you, it doesn’t mean another won’t.”
  1533. >You then look over to Fortitude.
  1534. “Don’t forget to keep an eye on the water.”
  1535. >Walking over to Hannibal, you pat his trunk.
  1536. “Alright buddy, you’re in charge while I’m gone.”
  1537.  
  1538. >…
  1539. >Walking into the woods, you relish being able to stretch your legs.
  1540. >There’s a cool breeze, but the air is pure.
  1541. >Sparrows dance about their nests, squirrels bound through the trees.
  1542. >Despite being so far from home, this forest is remarkably… peaceful.
  1543. >If you didn’t know better, you might think that you were somewhere in the Equestrian heartlands.
  1544. >What’s most odd, is the grass.
  1545. >It shows no sign of overgrowth and you see no weeds sprouting from the ground.
  1546. >And the grass is of even length- like it’s been maintained rather than eaten by animals.
  1547. >This seems more like a backyard than a forest.
  1548. >You duck under a low hanging branch in your path, and crest a small hill.
  1549. >Pausing, you inspect the rolling hills.
  1550. >Quite nice out here.
  1551. >Surely something more sinister stalks the land.
  1552. >Either far off- from the source of the magical wave- or perhaps nightfall will reveal more.
  1553. >Deep down, you feel unease.
  1554. >Some would call you jaded or cynical, but you trust your intuition.
  1555. >Footsteps- close behind you.
  1556. >Your left hand grasps your dagger, and you draw it in reversed grip.
  1557. >As you turn, you manage to get your sword a few inches out of its scabbard before stopping.
  1558. >A fox scurries off.
  1559. >Chuckling at the curious creature, you slide your dagger back into its sheathe.
  1560. >For all that you know- that fox could have been a shaper shifter, the sparrows venomous, the squirrels carnivorous…
  1561. >Or they’re just foxes, sparrows, and squirrels.
  1562. >Turning back, you continue on through the idyllic scenery.
  1563.  
  1564. >…
  1565. >You stand with Offense and watch as a squad fights a single Tartaran Beast.
  1566. >Four of them are batted away with its arms, three are thrown against a wall with a single sweep from its tail, and the last is tackled.
  1567. >Just before the beast chomps on the soldier, Offense speaks:
  1568. >”I’ve seen enough.”
  1569. >The creature disappears as the soldiers pick themselves up.
  1570. >You whisper to the General:
  1571. “I’m glad my drill sergeant wasn’t a unicorn.”
  1572. >”That was what, twenty seconds?”
  1573. “We’ve seen worse today.”
  1574. >”It makes me want to gouge out my eye. At this rate, we’re doomed.”
  1575. “You should go easier on them- half of the kids we’ve seen today lied about their age to join up.”
  1576. >”How do you know that? Don’t answer that- I already know…”
  1577. “There are hundreds of thousands of battle hardened veterans already serving.”
  1578. >”But what happens when these kids are all that stands between a city being eaten?”
  1579. >He doesn’t give you a chance to answer.
  1580. >”I have half a mind to do what you did. Fighting a defensive war… I need a drink, come on.”
  1581. >You walk with Offense out of the training yard, passing by the tents and rows of barracks.
  1582. >”The worst part is no more flying to the bar.”
  1583. “Someone’s become jaded.”
  1584. >”There were eight attacks since you and Wave hunted down that changeling. Over a hundred thousand soldiers and civilians dead. The 84th was even wiped out to the man.”
  1585.  
  1586. >He stops you.
  1587. >”And the worst part- we don’t even know if we’re winning this war.”
  1588. >”THUNDER!”
  1589. >The booming voice comes from a minotaur.
  1590. >Ambassador Blunt Force approaches, followed by a few dozen minotaurs.
  1591. >”If it isn’t the man that walked into and out of Tartarus. I’d call you Broken-Horn if you were a minotaur and successful… no offense.”
  1592. >That’s about as tactful as you can expect a minotaur to be.
  1593. >”What was it like?”
  1594. >”Nice to see you to Ambassador.”
  1595. >”Yes, yes.”
  1596. >Force holds up his mangled hand.
  1597. >”Haven’t we bonded over mutilation already?”
  1598. >”You’re just upset that I’m still better looking.”
  1599. >”In your dreams.”
  1600. >“Still on for poker?”
  1601. >”Always.”
  1602. >Force then focuses back on you:
  1603. >”What was it like?”
  1604. “Tartarus… cold and dark. But we didn’t get that deep.”
  1605. >”Still, it is no easy feat. You should be proud.”
  1606. “Too many people died. Because of me.”
  1607. >”Many will. Now, I think it’s time to test out your unicorn’s recreations. Offense, you know if they can make them bigger? And how many can we- what in the name of Broken-Horn’s left testicle is that?”
  1608.  
  1609. >A large… construct is approaching.
  1610. >It must be at least eight feet tall, maybe fourteen wide.
  1611. >From your angle, it looks like…
  1612. >Well- a box with a smaller box sticking out of each side.
  1613. >Made of riveted steel, echoing with a chorus of metallic rumblings.
  1614. >It seems to be moving on a series of metal plates on each side of the body.
  1615. >Like a train that lays its own tracks.
  1616. >As it climbs the road into Canterlot, you see its side profile- a forward facing parallelogram.
  1617. >You can feel the sheer amount of magic coming from the machine.
  1618. >And that feeling has nothing to do with your own interactions with the crystal.
  1619. >The aura is palpable, but no visible magical glow emanates from it.
  1620. >It moves at a snail’s pace though.
  1621. >Perhaps because of the uphill road, but you could outrun it with a brisk walk.
  1622. >What’s most imposing is that nine others follow the behemoth.
  1623. >Offense yells over the grinding machinery:
  1624. >”So is this what the tinkerer with the stupid name and that Arabian inventor came up with?”
  1625. “I have no idea what you’re talking about!”
  1626. >”Brairheart isn’t happy about it! They’ve eaten enough money and resources to build another Prydwen Class Airship.”
  1627. “What is it?”
  1628. >”I don’t know. But it sure doesn’t look like the moving castle they promised!”
  1629. >As Offense speaks, you watch Blunt Force toss one of the minotaur’s helmets underneath the plates that the machine crawls on.
  1630. >The iron object is quite easily crushed.
  1631. >And the look on the Ambassadors face is one of pure… exhilaration.
  1632. >He looks to you and the General.
  1633. >”Well come on, let’s follow these beauties!”
  1634.  
  1635. >…
  1636. >Your peaceful walk through the woods is interrupted as a voice yells out behind you.
  1637. >”Get back here!”
  1638. >Glancing back at the familiar voice, you see Hannibal stomping towards you with Rusty close behind.
  1639. >Once the pair arrives, the elephant quickly pats your head with his trunk.
  1640. >”He just stormed away after you.”
  1641. “And you followed?”
  1642. >”Well, someone had to keep an eye on him…”
  1643. “You just wanted to come too.”
  1644. >”No… of course not… what would ever- yeeeeah… yeah.”
  1645. >You simply glare at the minotaur.
  1646. >He puts his arms out, and a shoots you a grin.
  1647. >”Come on.”
  1648. >With a sigh, you relent.
  1649. “Just don’t fall behind.”
  1650. >You go over to Hannibal’s side, and pull yourself up onto the saddle across his back.
  1651. “Alright buddy, let’s go.”
  1652. >”Sounds good.”
  1653. “I was talking to the elephant.”
  1654. >Reaching to your back, you unsling your rifle.
  1655. >After locking the bayonet, you rest the firearm in your lap, cradling it.
  1656. >Just in case.
  1657. “So was there any change in the others?”
  1658. >”No, everyone’s still just frozen.”
  1659. >You glance over to Rusty as he continues.
  1660. >”It’s just the people though. Whatever magic it is also made a shield around them.”
  1661. “And how did you figure that out?”
  1662. >”Took a spear and poked Geoff.”
  1663. “You tried to stab him?”

  1667. “Yeah, you’re quite the scientist.”

  1670. >Smoke rises over the mountains as the dead burn.
  1671. >The construction of pyres took much longer than the battle itself.
  1672. >Some of the Bison tribes elected to bury their dead, but most of your allies and the soldiers Equestria lost burn together.
  1673. >The affair was silent- save for the crackling of flame.
  1674. >Words are unnecessary.
  1675. >Everypony knows the value of what was lost.
  1676. >The march was long and the sacrifices high.
  1677. >But the west has been secured.
  1678. >The beasts were contained to the plains.
  1679. >And their bodies have just been thrown in several piles.
  1680. >Mounds left to rot.
  1681. >While the soldiers mourn the lost, you look upon one of the mounds.
  1682. >Since the war started, tens of thousands of the beasts had to have been killed.
  1683. >Maybe more.
  1684. >How many more can be down there?
  1685. >Either the pits they dwell in are utterly massive, or these things breed like rabbits.
  1686. >What drives them?
  1687. >For animals, they seemed utterly focused on the destruction of civilization.
  1688. >Perhaps the minotaurs are right.
  1689. >Maybe they are demons- the harbingers of their apocalypse.
  1690. >Apocalypse or not, this war would have been a complete slaughter had Equestria not undergone a generation of militarization.
  1691. >These beasts would have torn through the world.
  1692.  
  1693. >Despite the losses, you’re proud of how well the soldiers have fought.
  1694. >Just looking at one of the bodies, the sheer menace would break many.
  1695. >They’re larger than ponies.
  1696. >Covered in a rough hide, their build is similar to that of a bulldog mixed with a crocodile.
  1697. >The front legs are longer and have much more mass built up.
  1698. >Jagged teeth lie within a foot long jaw.
  1699. >Strikes from their thick tails can break bone.
  1700. >A shallow fan arises from their spines.
  1701. >Even the gills under their front shoulders can look like eyes.
  1702. >The real question is what makes the pits?
  1703. >Tunnels bores straight to the surface.
  1704. >Well, soldiers have seen the magical blasts bore through the ground.
  1705. >But what’s behind that magic?
  1706. >What’s at the head of the beast?
  1707. >You should probably start the journey back to the capitol.
  1708. >It’s been over three months.
  1709. >There have been other attacks, but the military has managed to contain it.
  1710. >You’re wondering if General Lancer has recovered yet.
  1711. >Either way, you think it’s about time to do something.
  1712. >Something more than an elastic defense.
  1713. >Thunder had the right of it.
  1714. >If Anon were here, he would have-
  1715. >The ground begins to quake beneath you.
  1716. >Whilst the pyres burn, the soldiers begin to mobilize.
  1717. >A new pit is going to form.
  1718. >But instead, a sickly green aura starts to seep from the field.
  1719. >Like a magical mist, it begins to rise.
  1720. >As quickly as it coats the field, the air is cleared.
  1721. >Other than a bone-chilling gust of wind coming down from the mountains… nothing.
  1722.  
  1723. “Report! What’s going on!”
  1724. >Your gaze focuses on the dead beasts.
  1725. >They’re not going to rise from the dead, are they?
  1726. >The reality is much worse…
  1727. >One of the closest bodies was just slumped on the stomach.
  1728. >The corpse splits open along the spine- from neck to tail.
  1729. >Covered in the dark red blood of the beast- a much leaner creature emerges.
  1730. >It’s still larger than a pony.
  1731. >The torso appears like a starved dog- ribs pushing against a dark skin.
  1732. >Long legs- the front and back pair of equal length.
  1733. >The claws protruding from the feet are thin, curved, and almost a foot long.
  1734. >A spindly, whip-like tail dances behind the creature.
  1735. >Leathery wings protrude from its back.
  1736. >But the head…
  1737. >It appears skeletal.
  1738. >Like the skin coming up from the neck ends before it reaches a pair of beady red eyes.
  1739. >The jaw is sharp and pointed- still about a foot long.
  1740. >A single hole lies at the snout in place of a nose.
  1741. >Its maw has only a few broad teeth on each side- each looking as sharp as a blade before being tested in battle.
  1742. >And a long pointed tongue tastes the air.
  1743. >Maybe the minotaurs are right…
  1744. >More of the bodies are cracking open.
  1745. >And you think some of the new creatures aren’t this winged kind.
  1746. “To arms!”
  1747.  
  1748. >The creature stretches its wings, and in a single bound soars through the air towards you.
  1749. >Drawing your sword, you manage to jab it up into the creature’s neck.
  1750. >Its claws scrape against your armor and slash down onto your shoulders before it actually dies.
  1751. >Pulling your sword free, you see another creature charging from the erupting mound of bodies.
  1752. >This one is identical to the first, but lacks wings.
  1753. >You summon a bolt of arcane energy and send it hurdling through the enemy.
  1754. >Amongst the dreary overcast, you can see new monsters emerging from each and every pile of corpses left on the field.
  1755. >And there were dozens of piles.
  1756. >The winged ones swarm the few pegasi that have taken to the sky.
  1757. >On the ground they surround bison and earth ponies.
  1758. >Near the next pile over, you see a third type of creature.
  1759. >That one is taller, lacking a tail.
  1760. >It has a much heavier build, and the front legs are much longer than the rear.
  1761. >It walks on long knuckles, it’s claws folded up to the leg.
  1762. >And those claws are each as large as a scythe’s blade.
  1763. >It towers over a unicorn- who tries in vain to blast it back- knocking the soldier back onto one of the pyres before cleaving into the pony.
  1764. >Looking back to the mountain of spawn in front of you…
  1765. >The minotaurs are right.
  1766. >These are demons.
  1767. >Literal, unrelenting hell spawn.
  1768. >Summoning as much energy as you can, you cast an immense dome shield over the devolving mound ahead of you.
  1769. >And slam it to the ground.
  1770. >The shield rushes from stories in the air at its apex, to the height of your knees.
  1771. >It then dissipates, leaving the mangled and crushed bodies behind- all of the creatures twice dead.
  1772. >Your eyes blur for a moment, and you can feel blood flow from your nostril from the exertion.
  1773. >Shaking your head clear, you try to refocus.
  1774.  
  1775. >…
  1776. >”Hey Anon.”
  1777. >You glance down to Rusty.
  1778. >”So what if the others just unfreeze after a while?”
  1779. “Then we came out this way for nothing.”
  1780. >”Right… right.”
  1781. >You lean over to avoid hitting a branch as Hannibal walks under a tree that you can’t fully clear.
  1782. >That’s the third time he’s done that.
  1783. >He might be doing it on purpose…
  1784. >”Hey Anon.”
  1785. “Yeah?”
  1786. >”How far away do you think we are?”
  1787. “Hell if I know.”
  1788. >”What do we do if it’s weeks away.”
  1789. “Then we keep walking.”
  1790. >”All I’m saying is that we only know a direction. That magic could have come from the other side of the continent.”
  1791. “Magic tends not to go for that far. It’s a day or two away. Three at maximum.”
  1792. >”Right… right.”
  1793. >Barely a cloud in the sky.
  1794. >”Hey Anon.”
  1795. “Yes?”
  1796. >”Think we’ll get to fight something soon. It’s been months and I’m itching to.”
  1797. “Knowing my luck, yes. Knowing yours, no.”
  1798. >”Heh.”
  1799. >You’ll need to find a source of water if this detour goes on much longer.
  1800. >Forgot your canteen and backpack with the others.
  1801. >”Hey Anon.”
  1802. “What!”
  1803. >”I just wanted to say hey.”
