Expiry: Never

  1. >"You won’t let me die alone right Anon?"
  2. >You look to your sole companion in this hellish ordeal the two of you find yourselves in as you struggle to keep from freezing in the elements
  3. >It's been a week at the very least since you found yourselves in the wild fighting for your survival
  4. >You must endure, but can you?
  5.
  6. >One week earlier
  7. >The train platform you're waiting on is fairly quiet for a night run to the Crystal Empire with only a couple ponies milling about while waiting for the same train
  8. >Despite spring being around the corner, the cold air still tries to break into your winter coat and hat
  9. >You made sure to wear your heavy coat for the weather of the empire is not controlled like Equestria's except for around their large population centers like their capitol city
  10. >The town you're planning on heading to is merely a small bump in the road on the rail line to the capitol
  11. >There's an old friend there that reached out to you with a letter asking to come visit, so when you were finally able to get some free time away from work, you decided to go see them for old times sake
  12. >You're looking forward to seeing them again since it's been a couple years since you've seen them after the two of you parted ways after your schooling
  13. >Your internal musings are interrupted as the train pulls into the station
  14. >You pick you duffel bag of clothing and sling you backpack onto your back while the train slows to a stop
  15. >Several ponies get off the front couple of rail cars and you figure that you'll just get into one of the rear cars so you won't have to worry about having to sit next to someone as those fill up fairly quickly
  16. >You settle for the second to last car in the consist and climb aboard
  17. >The rail car is empty for all but one passenger
  18. >A magenta colored mare wrapped in a blanket is sitting near the front right side of the car reading a book
  19. >She eyes you as you walk down the aisle to find a seat
  20. >With a smile and a nod you acknowledge her
  21. "Good evening"
  22. >She smiles and replies "Good evening" in earnest before returning to her reading
  23. >You decide to take a seat near the middle of the train on it's left side and throw you duffel bag up into the overhead storage before unslinging your backpack and setting it on the aisle seat before you sit down on the adjacent window seat
  24. >You'll set your pack on your lap if someone has to sit next to you but you doubt you'll have to worry since there wasn't too many people waiting to get on
  25. >You settle into your seat and wait for the train to depart
  26. >It's not too long before the train is given the all clear to continue on down the line
  27. >Nobody else entered the car and the only noise you hear is the sound of the train passing along the rails
  28. >You feel yourself beginning to nod off and let sleep take you since it will be about noon the next day when you'll get to your destination
  29. >The last thing you see is the bright moon illuminating the outside world of the town you're leaving
  30.
  31. >A metallic screeching of steel and the shuttering of the train car jolts you from your slumber
  32. >There's no time to process what's happening as you are thrown from your seat and into the air
  33. >You instinctively try to reach out and grab something as you are seemingly floating through the air for a brief moment
  34. >What is happening!!!
  35. >You are slammed onto the floor, taking a direct hit to the chest from the back of a seat on your way down knocking the wind out of you as the world around you sounds as if it's tearing itself apart
  36. >Gasping for air you are interrupted by being slammed into the sides of the seats as the train car smashes into something
  37. >Something hits you in the head causing you to feel you eyesight begin to blur and you fade out of consciousness
  38. >...
  39. >Suddenly you're awoken to the feeling of freezing cold water submerging your face
  40. >Your eyes shoot open as you push yourself up revealing the carnage in front of you
  41. >Your eyes have to adjust to the dim flickering lights
  42. >Freezing cold air hits your wet face as the rail car's sides have been shredded into scrap metal
  43. >Your surroundings are tilted with the back of the car sticking up at an angle
  44. >Towards the front of the car the exit is block by the in rushing water
  45. >You can feel the cold of the water through your boots
  46. >The car is filling with water and fast
  47. >Panic sets in
  48. >The only words in your mind are GET OUT NOW
  49. >You quickly turn to climb up the slope that is ever so slowly increasing as you feel the floor beneath you move further into the water
  50. >You see your backpack hanging on a seat further up the aisle and quickly grab it with your left hand and get a strap onto your shoulder as you use your right hand to pull yourself up to the back of the car
  51. >Almost there
  52. >The door at the end is hanging open almost beckoning for you to grab ahold of it as the rail car continues to slant more and more vertically as it gets pulled into the black abyss of water behind you
  53. >You can make it
  54. >Using the seats on each side of you fling yourself to the door and pull yourself up it and out of the remains of the train
  55. >There's no time to think as you throw yourself from the wreckage and into the water
  56. >Luck is on your side as you manage to land on your feet in semi shallow water with the snowy shore about 40 feet away illuminated by Luna's bright moon
  57. >You wade through the freezing cold water as fast as you can and reach the shore
  58. >You turn around to watch the remnants of the train you were on slowly sink beneath the water as you catch your breath
  59. >Did anyone make it out of there besides you?
  60. >Taking in your surroundings now that you've caught a breather you find yourself at the base of a hill with the remains of the bridge your train got thrown off of looming at the top of it now severed from the rest of it on the other side of the river
  61. >Where even are you?
  62. >You stop thinking about that the moment you notice a body laying motionless further down the shore
  63. >You need to help them
  64. >With resolve you run over to the pony
  65. >It's the mare that was in the train with you
  66. >She must've somehow gotten flung out of the train on the way down
  67. >Please don't be dead please don't be dead
  68. >You reach the pony and quickly kneel down and gently pick up her head, checking for a pulse along her neck
  69. >Thank god she's alive
  70. >You don't know if she may have internal injuries or not, and don't know if it's a good idea to move her, but desperate times require desperate measures and you pick her up and get away from the damaged bridge in case more of it falls
  71. >There's some pine trees nearby, maybe those will work for now.
  72. >You set off to get someplace a little safer and out of the wind with the unconscious mare in your arms
  73.
  74. >It's been a couple of hours since the crash happened
  75. >The sun has just barely begun to crest over the horizon
  76. >You'd just gotten a small fire going not to long ago, and are currently trying to warm yourself up and dry your now partially frozen pantlegs from your leap from the wreckage
  77. >The unconscious mare from the train has yet to wake
  78. >You were lucky enough to find a large enough pine tree that blocked most of the snow from getting under it and wrapped her in your coat to keep her warm
  79. >You've done all you can for her now, you just hope she'll wake up soon
  80. >You're slightly chilled without your coat, but you were lucky enough to have put on a sweater over your shirt before you left home
  81. >As long as you keep yourself moving and keep the fire burning the cold is manageable for now
  82. >In the time since everything had happened you'd tucked the mare away under the tree and tried looking for any other survivors
  83. >You called out, yelled, whatever you could think of up and down the river edge for awhile
  84. >There was no luck in that endeavor
  85. >As fast as everything happened, you hope the poor souls who couldn't make it out did not suffer for long
  86. >You are alone
  87. >It will be only you out here if that mare does not wake
  88. >Hopefully rescue will come soon once they realize the train never showed up to it's stops
  89. >With daylight now upon you it will be another several hours until they even get the notion that you're missing, and who knows how many hours after that for them to get out here
  90. >You're going to have to hunker down until rescue arrives
  91. >Once you gave up on looking for fellow survivors, you focused on gathering wood to get a fire going
  92. >There's plentiful wood in this location so it didn't take long for you to gather enough fuel for a fire
  93. >Which it did not take long to get going since you had packed some matches in your backpack along with some miscellaneous outdoors tools
  94. >You planned on exploring the area around the town your friend lives at since it's surrounded by a lot of untamed nature, so you made sure you had a couple things packed for the off chance you might need them
  95. >It's a good thing you were able to grab it while escaping the wreckage
  96. >You definitely would be completely screwed without it if you got stuck out here long term.
  97. >You'll assess what all you have once the sun gets up in the sky enough
  98. >For now you huddle up to the fire under the tree to keep you and the mare warm
  99. >You poke the fire to keep yourself occupied for the time being while you wait and think of what you should be doing
  100. >You're going to need some kind of shelter soon
  101. >The wind is blocked partially from the snow that's drifted around the tree, but it's not very effective if you may be stuck out here for an extended period of time
  102. >There's enough wood around here to make a decent shelter
  103. >Your thoughts are interrupted by stirring of the mare next to you awaking
  104. >It takes a few blinks for her to process her surroundings before her eyes go wide realizing that something isn't right, and quickly tries to get up but fumbles due to your coat still wrapped around her
  105. "Hey, easy now take things slow. You've been through a lot whether you know it or not. I mean you no harm."
  106. >The mare turns her head to you while slowly sitting up "Where am I? What happened? Who are you?"
  107. >Her eyes scan your face probably trying to read you whether or not you're a threat to her you figure
  108. >You poke the fire with a stick, stirring the coals before you speak
  109. "To answer in the order you asked one, I don't know for sure as I've yet to find out myself. Two, the train we were on crashed into the river..."
  110. >You point out in the general direction of the river and the now destroyed rail bridge with your stick for a moment before focusing onto the mare while you go back to the fire
  111. "I don't know exactly how it all happened for I was awoken as it went down and was knocked unconscious for I don't know how long before being woke up again to water rushing into the sinking rail car we were in, and barely made it out before it went under with the rest of everything. I found you miraculously on the riverbank. You must've gotten thrown out as the train fell. I grabbed you and brought you here. Three, you can call me Anon."
  112. >You watch the mare's face as she's trying to process what she's been told
  113. "It's a lot to take in all at once I know, but that's the current situation we're in. I couldn't tell if you were injured or not, so now that you're awake now I must ask if you feel okay? Does anything feel broken or anything like that?"
  114. >The mare slowly moves her limbs and neck around for a few moments, seeing if there's anything wrong "I think I'm okay minus feeling really sore. Thank you for asking"
  115. "You're welcome. I'm glad you're okay. I was worried that I was was going to be the only one who survived"
  116. >The mare looks at you concernedly "What do you mean the only one? What happened to the other passengers that were on the train with us?"
  117. >You sigh
  118. "We were the only ones to make it out of the train. I checked the rivers edge for awhile once I got you safely tucked under this tree, calling out in hopes anybody else had made it out... there was nothing but the wind"
  119. >You lean back against the trunk of the tree before speaking again, trying not to think about all the lives lost, and why only two of you were the only lucky ones
  120. "With all that's happened, I don't know how long it's going to be for us to be rescued. It might be a day or more who knows, but in the current situation it's best that we work together to get through this."
  121. >The mare stays silent taking in the information
  122. >With all this just dumped on her she's probably in shock
  123. >You can't blame her one bit for that if that's the case
  124. >You're still processing what happened and it's been hours by this point
  125. >Looking at the mare sitting up at the fire next to you you realize you've never asked her for her name
  126. >An easy thing to miss with everything going on
  127. "Excuse my rudeness for not asking sooner, but what is your name?"
