  6. “What’s going on? Twilight? Spike?”
  7. >It is a derelict space devoid of any sound or light.
  8. >Her cries echo, then fade
  9. >“You are chosen, Starlight Glimmer.”
  10. >A pinpoint of light pierces the darkness and casts a narrow beam on her.
  11. “Chosen? Who are you? Where am I?”
  12. >“Another may join you in time, but for now you must realize your potential.”
  13. >Glimmer began to glow as magic surged through her.
  14. “Ahhhhh! What is this?! What’s happening?!”
  15. >Wings began to form at her sides.
  16. >A sharp discharge of magic accompanied the unicorn’s ascension.
  17. “W-What..? W-Wings? I-I’m an alicorn now?”
  18. >“There was power deep within you, and you sought to keep it hidden.”
  19. “I don’t know what you mean!”

  21. “Am... Am I a princess now?”
  22. >“Titles of royalty are not ours to bestow. You are as you have always been. Now that your power has been awakened, so must you.”

  24. >As the light faded and darkness surrounded her again, Glimmer felt the blackness close in.

  42. >She was sedated and still.
  43. >“Send a runner to Princess Twilight and tell her Starlight is awake.”
  44. >Glimmer woke again with a start, but found Twilight waiting.
  45. “What... What’s happening, Twilight?”
  46. >Twilight wrapped her hooves around Starlight’s neck, giving her a tight hug.
  47. >”We’ve been so worried! You were in a coma for a long time...”
  48. >Starlight stared in shock.
  49. >“Three months ago, your room in the castle... Vanished. Completely. Spike tried to wake you up and nearly fell out the door. It was like somepony deleted your room cleanly from all existence.”
  50. “I remember some... Voice. And a black place...”
  51. >Starlight leaned forward with a start, looking over her shoulder.
  52. “And... Wings...”
  53. >Twilight looked over, but frowned.
  54. >“There’s nothing there, Starlight. Your probably a bit confused... Maybe even hallucinating. You should rest. Three months is a long time to be comatose.”
  55. >Starlight stared at her back, flicking the wings gently.
  56. >How did she do that?
  57. >And why couldn’t Twilight see them?
  58. >Glimmer relaxed back and sighed.
  59. >Maybe Twilight was right.
  60. >She felt sleep take her swiftly.
  61. >The void was waiting.
  62. “Hello?”
  63. >“Do you doubt your own power, Starlight Glimmer?”
  64. “Nopony else sees the wings...”
  65. >“Then their doubt worries you?”
  66. >What worried her was the concern of her sanity.
  67. “But what am I am alicorn for?”
  68. >“You must find your purpose yourself. Show those around you of such power, and save Equestria from the grave darkness that looms ahead.”
  69. “Grave darkness? What’s coming? Hello?!”
  70. >The voice was gone.
  71. >Starlight awoke in her bed in a cold sweat.
  72. >A nurse was watching her, and the sound of a minor alert was ringing from her pulse monitor.
  73. >“Ms Glimmer, are you okay? I think you may have been having a nightmare. It elevated your heart rate significantly.”
  74. “Y-Yes, just a nightmare, thanks...”
  75. >Could Luna perhaps help her? It seemed to be a dream every time...
  76. >Starlight was discharged the next day.
  77. >She asked Twilight for Luna’s help with those dreams.
  78. >She constantly looked at her back, flicking those wings.
  79. >They felt real enough.
  80. “Twilight, do me a small favor, and don’t ask me why, okay?”
  81. >“What is it, Starlight?”
  82. “Touch me with your hoof, right here.”
  83. >She gestured where she knew her wings to be.
  84. >Twilight raised a brow slowly, but moved her hoof up and pressed it firmly into Glimmer’s wing.
  85. “Ow!”
  86. >“I’m sorry! Do you have a bruise or something?”
  87. “No... You didn’t feel anything?”
  88. >Twilight shook her head.
  89. >Starlight grew more worried.
  90. “I... Really hope Luna can help...”
  91. >Starlight traveled to Canterlot that day.
  92. >Though the two sisters were concerned, Luna felt confident she would be able to sort out whatever was going on in Starlight’s dreams.
  93. >Starlight tucked herself in, and let sleep claim her.
  94. >The void of time and space was nice this time of year.
  95. >Still empty.
  96. >Still black.
  97. >Still completely nondescript and neutrally temperate.
  98. >Starlight saw the light surround her before she heard the voice.
  99. >"Why have you brought the outsider unto our realm, Starlight Glimmer?"
  100. "I haven't-"
  101. >Luna emerged from the void in a shimmer of dark blue magic, but could not penetrate the blackness.
  102. >It was like she had been suspended in time, frozen in the middle of her spell.
  103. >"What purpose does she serve here? We have asked things of you, not your Princess."
  104. "P-Please, nopony else can see my wings! They can't feel them! They're worried that I've gone crazy!"
  105. >"Only the insane have strength enough to prosper. Only those that prosper may truly judge what is sane."
  106. >A blinding flash threw her from her slumber, and out of her bed.
  107. >There was a commotion next door.
  108. >Guards were rushing in, along with Celestia and Twilight.
  109. >Luna was catatonic.
  110. >"Starlight! What happened? She entered your dream, then fell into a seizure and won't wake up!"
  111. "I-I don't know... The light was upset and I don't know what it did to her!"
  112. >Celestia worked other healers and medical staff trying to revive Luna as Twilight brought Starlight outside.
  113. >"Starlight, this is bad."
  114. "You don't say! The Princess entered my dream and some magical force that turned me into an alicorn just as easily turned her into a vegetable!"

  116. >Starlight felt something rise up inside her.
