  33.
  34.
  35.
  36.
  37. > It's tradition that the first day of ascension begin with an early morning assembly at the Sugar Mountain Celestial Temple.
  38. > The largest of the fourteen Celestial Chapels in the Barrens.
  39.
  40. > Like all churches of Celestialism, the structure faces north, includes a large sunroof, and an altar decorated in the Celestial colours.
  41. > Blue, purple and yellow.
  42.
  43. > The Sugar Mountain Celestial temple is the first and singular of its kind.
  44. > Of all the fourteen temples. None are as large or as lavish.
  45.
  46. > Tucked beneath the mountain's summit lies the spacious limestone temple.
  47. > Crowned with several pale symmetrical towers topped with golden teardrop spires forty five feet in height.
  48. > The building itself is thirty five feet tall, forty feet across and sixty seven feet deep.
  49.
  50. > Inside, the sun reflects the pearly basalt interior upon a number of intricate (now sunbleached) tapices. Each stitched by four of the original nine wives of Hubert Igneous Gregarious Granite Petrified Pie.
  51.
  52. > The Sugar Mountain temple was the first place of worship erected in the name of Celestialism.
  53. > Constructed several years into the church's founding, the initial structure was no larger than a log cabin built by hoof by church's paternal founder.
  54.
  55. > It was decided by him that the church's location needed to be planted at the foot of Sugar Mountain based on his extensive geological research and passion for arcane history.
  56. > He declared that Sugar Mountain was the location of Celestia's own ascension over three thousand years ago.
  57.
  58.
  59. > It is believed among the followers of Celestialism that upon her ascension her physical body dissolved into an omnipresent, structureless entity that followed a cool wind north to the land of glaciers and infinite sky.
  60. > Where her soul lingers as a series of colorful dancing ribbons in the night.
  61. > To members of the church, these spectral lights are the physical manifestation of Celestials soul.
  62. > To everypony else, it's is known as the aura borealis.
  63.
  64. > Pinkamena, was seated on the right of the church, four rows nearest the altar between Marble and Limestone.
  65.
  66. > To her right was Marble. Who, for the first time in years, had been properly washed and manicured.
  67. > She smelled like her mom.
  68. > A lavender scented fragrance which her mother had worn forever, and reminded Pinkamena of Sunday school beatings and the “fancy” dinners she would throw whenever company visited.
  69.
  70. > Limestone, who was now condemned to the potato sack, sat with her hooves crossed gnawing on her tongue with such vigor that Pinkamena could swear she could see blood between her sisters teeth.
  71.
  72. > Maud, Cloudy and Igneous were seated three pews in front with a better view of the closed casket at the head of the church.
  73.
  74. > In the row directly ahead of Pinkamena were three mares she recognized from Sunday school.
  75. > fashioned in their fanciest dresses, whispering and giggling amongst themselves.
  76.
  77. > Pinkamena initially made an effort to eavesdrop. > But stopped when she realized all they had on their mind were the stallions they hoped to impress during the celebration.
  78. > Before tuning out completely she overheard talk of money, parents and plans of escaping the Barrens and living amongst the “normal” ponies.
  79.
  80. > Such talk was either far too boring or far too relatable.
  81. > Pinkamena placed her hooves together, closed her eyes and muttered to herself whatever tomes decided to pop in her head at the moment.
  82.
  83. “To take a life is to steal a family and a portion of Ponykind.”
  84.
  85. “In breathing, you allow Celestia to become a part of you. And invite yourself to become part of Celestia.”
  86.
  87. “I am with you always. So long as you trust in me.”
  88.
  89. > A bell rang from the altar and everypony went quiet.
  90. > High priestess Samsara Pie emerged from a curtain behind the alter.
  91. > Dressed in a long white and yellow robe.
  92. > She was an older mare.
  93. > About twenty years beyond Cloudy
  94.
  95. > “We gather here today to celebrate and remember the death of Soapstone Pie.” She began
  96.
  97. > “Though she may have ripped from our community prematurely, we must remind ourselves that the princess works in mysterious ways. Her benevolent plan, one which we are incapable of understanding has brought our dear sister Soapstone closer to her light….”
  98.
  99. > Pinkamena felt a cold breeze sweep through the room.
  100. > Not in the form of a sudden wind.
  101. > But a slow creeping coldness.
  102.
  103. > Pinkamena looked to Limestone, who was showing a degree of sentimentality she had ever seen from the mare.
  104.
  105. > Pinkamena's eyes skated across the aisles towards the altar.
  106. > Glazing the sad congregation of suits, ties, dresses, skirts, and bonnets.
  107. > Sobs of unknown origin within the crowd and of varying intensity echoed through the hollow corridor.
  108.
  109. > Her eyes continued upwards until landing on the coffin.
  110. > An unimpressive box made of unpainted lumber.
  111. > She hadn't thought much of the closed coffin until now.
  112.
  113. > But it was certainly unusual.
  114. > To her knowledge, all funerals are supposed to be open caskets.
  115. > At least to her recollection.
  116. > The Celestial Tome’s instruct how to proceed in all ways and in all things.
  117.
  118. > The only reason a casket would be closed would be under special circumstances.
  119. > Usually relating to the deceased suffering severe upper body mutilation.
  120.
  121. > The closed casket corroborates with brother Sonny’s story.
  122. > But if the young mare really did kill herself
  123. > It only raises further questions
  124.
  125. > “...And as we lay this mare to rest, let us proceed in prayer.”
  126.
  127. > The congregation closed their eyes, bowed their heads and prayed.
  128.

  135.
  136.
  137. > After mass, everypony exited the church and gathered in the streets.
  138. > From now until ascension, was a time of alcoholic indulgence, socializing, and family.
  139.
  140. > Pinkamena, not old enough or interested in any of those things, started back towards the house with Marble close behind.
  141. > With half the family now congealed in the streets the town became a loud, mass of bodies chattering and squeezing against one another
  142.
  143. > The two pushed through the thick of the crowd,
  144. > Once free of the claustrophobia a familiar voice started calling their name.
  145.
  146. > “Sister Pinkamena, sister Marble!? Is that you?”
  147.
  148. “Brother Skip!” Pinkamena cheered, bouncing towards him and greeting him with a hug
  149.
  150. > “I’m so happy to see you! It's been months!”
  151.
  152. “I’m happy to see you too!”
  153.
  154. > Marble waved at Skip
  155.
  156. > “Oh my gosh! What a makeover!” Skip gushed “You look beautiful! I wasn’t certain it was you without your potato sack!”
  157.
  158. > Marble blushed, and started kicking up dust with her front leg
  159.
  160. > “Where’s your family staying?”
  161.
  162. “Sister Sunshine and brother Sonny's house.”
  163.
  164. > “Ah! We just arrived today. We tried to get a room there but they were full.”
  165.
  166. “Where are you staying?” Pinkamena asked
  167.
  168. > “Sister Tame Mares.”
  169.
  170. “You wanna switch?” Pinkamena grumbled
  171.
  172. > “Why? What happened THIS time?” Skip chuckled
  173.
  174. “Oh, you know.” She began “The usual insane babbling. The pitiful performances, the fetishizing.” Pinkamena grumbled
  175.
  176. > “I've never experienced any of this “fetishizing.” The most peculiar thing I’ve witnessed from Sunshine are her breakdowns.”
  177.
  178. “With all due respect, you're not a mare. You don't have to deal with her gushing about your “virality” and “fertility.’ Pinkamena replied
  179.
  180. > “True.” Skip nodded “But still. I would MUCH rather stay at Sonny's. Sure they're a bit odd, but sister Tame Mare has sinister flatulence.”
  181.
  182. > Pinkamena rolled her eyes and continued to the house.
  183.
  184. > Marble and Skip followed close
  185.
  186. > “Hey, did you hear the big news?” Skip beamed “You’re looking at the new salt mine lunch bell ringer!”
  187.
  188. “Wow! Moving up in the world.” Pinkamena said sarcastically
  189.
  190. > “It’s like you said! A job’s a job. Not all of us can make it big. It's the small ponies that make things work anyways.”
  191.
  192. “Enough about that!” Pinkamena snarled “I only said that because your dad is an engineer. Shouldn’t he be promoting you ACTUAL positions in the mine?”
  193.
  194. > “I wish! I’m clawing for work!” Skip turned to Marble
  195.
  196. > “You would know better than anypony how the youngest is ALWAYS given the final thought?”
  197.
  198. > Marble nodded in agreement
  199.
  200. >
  201. > Skip then tossed his hoof over Pinkamena's neck, dragging his hooves as his stubby legs tried to keep up.
  202.
  203. > “Didn’t anypony tell you about the party?”
  204.
  205. “What party?”
  206.
  207. > “Sister Cutie Pie is throwing a party in the usual spot. A retreat from the parents while they drink and spin the same old stories.’
  208.
  209. “You know I don’t get along with ANY of those spoiled ponies. And sister Cutie Pie is the last pony I want to see.”
  210.
  211. > “You and your principals!” Skip hollered “Consider this, Pinkamena. In ten years, everypony our age will be running the family. Now, you know my relationship with them….Heck! I’ve been forced to tolerate their company far longer than you considering they’re my neighbour's! But like my father says. “Never steer from opportunity.”
  212.
  213. > “No offense, but ponies like your father and sister Cutie Pie are the reason I want to leave the Barrens.”
  214.
  215. > “But you have no Ill feelings towards me, correct?”
  216.
  217. “Not at the moment.”
  218.
  219. > “Then come with me! I don't want to be in the company of the parents or my spoiled “friends” But if you go, maybe we could milk an inkling of enjoyment from such a rotten weekend.”
  220.
  221. “Fine.” Pinkamena sighed “But if sister Cutie Pie or any of her little minions start their usual nonsense, I will not hesitate to match their passive aggression with legitimate aggression.”
  222.
  223. > “Don't worry, sister. It will be you and I who will have the last laugh.”
  224.
  225. > Skip touched his hoof to his lips and Pinkamena understood exactly what he wanted.
  226.

  233.
  234.
  235. > At every gathering, whether it be a birthday or ascension the younger and unmarried ponies, age thirteen to eighteen traditionally snuck away to a secluded area at the base of the mountain.
  236. > The spot was a small open area resting behind two giant boulders and a passage of jagged rocks.
  237. > Concealed from wind, far from town and top secret among the youth.
  238. > The area was perfect for parties.
  239.
  240. > The party area was bare.
  241. > Large stones along a flat incline near a gaping hole leading to a tunnel terminating in a sudden drop.
  242. > Nopony knows where this curious cave leads, or why it exists.
  243. > And asking any of the parents was out of the question, considering the area was meant to be secret to only the adolescents.
  244. > In a rare instance of agreement all the teenage mares decided to keep the area secret.
  245.
  246. > The mysterious cave of unknown origin with the suspicious drop became nothing more than disposal for the wine a cigarettes the teens would consume at these private gatherings.
  247.
  248. > Pinkamena had been visiting what ponies literally called “the spot” for years.
  249. > And upon entering this years ascension, she saw all the ponies she had the misfortune of growing up with.
  250.
  251. > Cutie Pie, the undisputed leader of purity and wealth sat atop a large stone in the back of “the spot” near the cave.
  252. > Her and her harpie friends Smoothstone Pie and Cherry Pie watched the crowd beneath them like vultures perched upon a branch with their perfectly styled manes and virgin fur.
  253.
  254. > Pinkamena could hardly stand Cutie and her friends and decided to scale along the wall to the far right corner of “the spot” away from of their scrutiny.
  255.
  256. > As Pinkamena, Skip and Marble stood awkwardly along the wall, Skip began to point at the other party goers.
  257.
  258. > “See, sister Sedimite Pie?” Skip asked, pointing to a larger mare, no older than fourteen “Father tells me she’s getting married to brother Prickly Pie. Which is unheard of considering Prickly Comes from garbage stock.”
  259.
  260. > Pinkamena glanced at her sister who shrugged
  261.
  262. > “Of course sister Sediment’s family is very happy about this, but the idea of brother Prickly engaging a mare of lesser purity has caused a predictable uproar.”
  263.
  264. > “Skip, don’t WE come from garbage stock?” Pinkamena asked
  265.
  266. > “Well, we may not be within the upper echelon of genetic superiority….BUT my mother’s great, great, great, great , great, great grandmother was impregnated by THE Hubert Igneous Gregarious Granite Petrified Pie.
  267.
  268. > Pinkamena rolled her eyes
  269. > Every Time they meet now, Skip is compelled to remind her that he originates from pure stock.
  270. > Families who are on a financial decline often remind themselves of their “pure stock” as a coping mechanism.
  271.
  272. > Marble looked around the party nervously before leaning in
  273.
  274. > “Pinkie?” She whispered
  275.
  276. > “Yes, Marble?”
  277.
  278. > “Ummm…..Aren’t we all from the same pony? How could our blood be less pure than theirs.”
  279.
  280. > “Marble, for Celestias ghost don’t start…”
  281.
  282. > “It’s simple, Marble.” Skip began.
  283.
  284. > “When Father Hubert Igneous Gregarious Granite Petrified Pie settled in the Barrens, he had nine wives. He selected them for breeding on account of their racial purity, talents and beauty. But as time passed and methods of identifying racial purity improved, it was uncovered that four of his nine wives were sub-eighty five percent earth pony. Having a mix of either Pegasi or Unicorn in their lineage.”
  285.
  286. > Marble scratched her head
  287.
  288. “Some families don’t carry the same amount of earth pony purity.” Pinkamena continued “For example Maud, Limestone, you and I are four point eight percent Pegasi. In the Barrens it means we are only slightly pure. But outside of the Barrens, where most ponies are mixed either in halves or in thirds it means nothing! We’re around ninety five point two percent Earth pony, which is more pure than ninety four percent of all earth ponies.”
  289.
  290. > “Ah! But you see sister.” Skip replied “I’m ninety seven point four percent Earth pony. Making my stock stronger and of higher value.”
  291.
  292. > Pinkamena rolled her eyes again
  293. > Skip scooted beside Marble, dropped his hoof around her back and Pointed at Cutie Pie atop the stone.
  294.
  295. > “You see Cutie Pie over there?” He asked
  296. “She comes from a family of ninety nine point three percent Purity!”
  297.
  298. > Marble, who hadn’t even heard of this metric of ranking ponies until this very moment, was swept by the concept and began to glare at Cutie Pie with jealous eyes.
  299.
  300. > “She’s a very important pony. And one you should look to impress.” Skip nodded “Her father owns both the Sugar Mountain mines and the village of Sugar Mountains.”
  301.
  302. “She also “allegedly” stabbed her younger sister with a ballpoint after not getting what she wanted for Hearths Warming.”
  303.
  304. > “Really?” Marble gulped
  305.
  306. > Pinkamena pointed to the mare to the right of Cutie, a small, slightly chubby mare with glasses.
  307. > Along her neck was a large purple scar surrounded by veins.
  308.
  309. > “That was years ago!” Skip shrugged
  310.
  311. > Marble began to shudder and her stare fell to the ground.
  312.
  313. “Just stay away from her Marble.” Pinkamena warned “I’ve had my run-ins with her. She is NOT a mare you want to get involved with.”
  314.
  315. > Skip yawned then dangled his hoof around Pinkamena, leaning into her ear he started
  316.
  317. > “Of course, speaking of dangerous mares.” He said cooly “I have a couple bits I’m willing to part with for a good time.”
  318.
  319. “What's the point?” Pinkamena sighed “I only ever started kissing you chumps to raise money for my Ponyville trip. And it doesn't look like I’m getting there anytime soon.”
  320.
  321. > “Well….Consider it your savings for next year!” Skip urged “Think of all the Bits you’ll have after a year!”
  322.
  323. “You REALLY want a kiss, don't you?”
  324.
  325. > “I’ve been waiting for one since last summer's sun celebration.”
  326.
  327. > “Sister! What are you doing!?” Marble cried “What if mom finds out! She’ll be SO angry! Not to mention it’s a sin to kiss ponies outside of marriage!”
  328.
  329. “Marble, it’s fine. Skip and I Have been doing this for a long time.”
  330.
  331. > Marble rubbed her hooves together anxiously
  332.
  333. “You won’t tell anypony, right?”
  334.
  335. > “O…Okay….Just be safe….”
  336.
  337. > Pinkamena and Skip parted from the crowd, sneaking away through a narrow path leading to a quiet spot away from the crowd.
  338.
  339. > “Ya know….Marble looks pretty fine when she isn’t buried under two inches of dirt.”
  340.
  341. “Yeah, maybe you should marry her.” Pinkamena suggested
  342.
  343. > “Nah, I couldn’t….”
  344.
  345. “Sure she’s kinda awkward. And she may be hard to understand sometimes and her only education is in the Celestial Tomes….But she’s real sweet. I think she would make the perfect stay at home wife.”
  346.
  347. > “Pinkamena, I know what you're up to.”
  348.
  349. “Good. Then marry her.” Pinkamena pushed “Get her away from my mother.”
  350.
  351. > “And what would my parents say to that? It would be like bringing home a feral. The only time I ever hear her speak is with you and it’s like….”
  352.
  353. “It’s like what?”
  354.
  355. > “All I was saying is that even if she could put herself together and I was actually interested, my parents would never allow it.”
  356.
  357. > After a short walk the two arrived at a small overlook along the mountain.
  358.
  359. > Skip sat along the mountain and unbuckled his pants.
  360.
  361. > “I’ve been saving up my bits. I want a hug AND a kiss!”
  362.
  363. > Pinkamena bit her tongue
  364.
  365. “You got it.” Pinkamena hissed
  366.
  367. > Pinkamena sat on Skips lap
  368.
  369. > She could feel his penis growing beneath his pants, between her thighs
  370.
  371. > Pinkamena stared at his stiff rod and his juices staining the fabric of his brown trousers.
  372.
  373. “It’s certionaly been a while hasn’t it, brother?” Pinkamena chuckled awkwardly
  374.
  375. > Skip placed his hooves along her lower back
  376.
  377. > “Sister Pinkamena. I hope there's a special place in the Celestial Ethear for angels like you.”
  378.
  379. > Pinkamena leaned in close and the two kissed
  380. > Their tongues wrestled and they shared spit for a couple minutes before Pinkamena pulled away.
  381.
  382. > “Is it over already?” Skip groaned
  383.
  384. “Yep! That’ll be three bits!”
  385.
  386. > Skip fished out his money from his pants pocket
  387.
  388. > “I only wish it lasted longer…”
  389.
  390. “We can always kiss again.” Pinkamena shrugged
  391.
  392. > “Yeah….I would like that.”
  393.
  394. > Pinkamena kissed him again
  395.
  396. > Pinkamena moaned as the two embraced
  397. > She place her left hoof along the tip of his penis and her right under his chin.
  398.
  399. > Skips hooves massaged Pinkamena's back
  400.
  401. > “Oh, sister….You really are the best.” He said as she bit down on his bottom lip
  402.
  403. > Skip began to slid his hoof along Pinkamena's rump, along her belly and below her bellybutton.
  404.
  405. > Pinkamena pulled her hoof from his staff, released his lip and slapped his hoof away.
  406.
  407. > Skip looked shocked and embarrassed.
  408.
  409. > “Sister I…I…”
  410.
  411. “I think you’ve had enough kisses for today.”
  412.
  413. > “I think so.” Skip nodded
  414.
  415. > Skip Gave her the money and she lifted herself from his lap.
  416.
  417. > “Let's get back to the party, I’m parched.” Pinkamena suggested.
  418.
  419. > “Pinkamena?”
  420.
  421. “Yes?”
  422.
  423. > “Have you ever considered….”
  424.
  425. > Skip gave her a queer look
  426.
  427. “What?”
  428.
  429. > “I…I’ve never seen a naked mare before….”
  430.
  431. > Pinkamena started to cringe
  432.
  433. > “What do you look like beneath your robe?’
  434.
  435. “There’s no amount of bits in the world that I would accept to show you anything.” Pinkamena said I'm a deathly serious tone
  436.
  437. > “I know…It’s a terrible thing to imagine…But don’t you ever think about sex? What might it be like?”
  438.
  439. “Sometimes…But thoughts like that should be ignored.”
  440.
  441. > Pinkamena started coiling her mane around her hooves
  442.
  443. > “You look nervous.”
  444.
  445. “Skip…We’re friends, right?”
  446.
  447. > “Of course.”
  448.
  449. “Sooooo….If I told you a secret. You wouldn't tell anypony?”
  450.
  451. > “I haven't told anyone about you kissing ponies.”
  452.
  453. “That's different.” Pinkamena hissed “You LIKE kissing me.”
  454.
  455. > “True…Very true…”
  456.
  457. “I’ve never told anypony this..But I like to touch myself.”
  458.
  459. > Skips eyes grew wide.
  460.
  461. > “Sister! Is this true!?”
  462.
  463. > “It’s true. And I do it often…I find that's it’s good for stress…It makes me feel…calm and…Warm.”
  464.
  465. > “What do you think about when you do this?”
  466.
  467. > “I don’t use my imagination. I have magazines. I brought them from Ponyville last time I was there. “The Canterlot Enquirer.” Pinkamena giggled nervously
  468.
  469. “My friend Rainbow Dash showed me them. She called them “tabloids.”
  470.
  471. > “What's in these tabloids?”
  472.
  473. “Most of them are articles about famous ponies I’ve never heard of. And like…fashion mix-ups and such.”
  474.
  475. > Pinkamena was now tugging at her mane, feeling aroused, nervous and guilty all at the same time.
  476.
  477. “Hey, Skip?”
  478.
  479. > “Yes, sister?”
  480.
  481. “Have you ever heard of a “Mi Amore Cadenza?”
  482.
  483. > “The name sounds familiar.”
  484.
  485. “Apparently she’s going to be the new princess of the Crystal Empire.”
  486.
  487. > “A new princess? But…There’s never been a “new” princess. What does that even mean!?” He laughed
  488.
  489. “Apparently Luna has fallen ill. And that this “Mi Amore” is her protege.”
  490.
  491. > “So she’s a heathen? An affront to the one true Celestia.”
  492.
  493. “I think it's beyond that.” Pinkamena shuddered
  494.
  495. > “How so?”
  496.
  497. “You know how in the tomes, Celestia speaks of the apollyon? the leviathan and The Asmodeus? I think this new princess Mi Amore is just that. She’s shameless and vile but also…beautiful…She makes me feel things a good mare shouldn’t.”
  498.
  499. > Skip was silent
  500.
  501. > “Is this the pony you pleasure yourself to?” He gulped
  502.
  503. > Pinkamena snapped back to her senses
  504.
  505. “Y..You know what? C..Consider this my confession. Now let’s go.”
  506.
  507. > “Wait just a minute! You can't just say something like that and move on like nothing happened!”
  508.
  509. “What do you want me to say?” Pinkamena snapped “You were the one that brought this up!”
  510.
  511. > “I didn't think you would tell me you're touching yourself to the devil herself!”
  512.
  513. “I don't know if she is or not!” Pinksmena cried “I only have five magazines to go off of!”
  514.
  515. > “So why do you bring this up?”
  516.
  517. “Because…Perhaps….”
  518.
  519. > Pinkamena began to tug on her mane
  520.
  521. “If it's the end…If she is who the tomes have predicted…What are we still doing? What’s the point of any of this? I don’t want to die. I haven’t even started living.”
  522.
  523. > Skip placed his hoof on Pinkamena's shoulder.
  524.
  525. > “When you put things like that. Abstaining from sin seems so much easier.”
  526.
  527. “What do you mean?”
  528.
  529. > “I mean…I’ve gone this far without committing any of Celestia’s more egregious sins. If this Mi Amore is the mare you say and she brings upon the apocalypse. Then we should celebrate her.”
  530.
  531. > Skip kissed Pinkamena on the forehead.
  532.
  533. “Judgement is nearing sister. And you and I will be the most beautiful souls in paradise.”
  534.

  537. “From the cradle to the grave, and back again. I will love you forever.”
