Expiry: Never

  1. 1.
    >She's at the Canterlot Library, as promised, in the Star Swirl section specifically, surrounded by piles of books
  2. 2.
    >Muzzle buried in one, of course, and she doesn't even notice you approach
  3. 3.
    >You stand in front of her for a minute, curious to see how long it will take her to notice you
  4. 4.
    >A fucking while, as it turns out
  5. 5.
    >You give up and loudly clear your throat, and she glances up at you
  6. 6.
"Nona! Glad you could make it."
  7. 7.
    >She places the book down and stands, before embracing you warmly
  8. 8.
    >You return the hug, relieved to see her okay
  9. 9.
    >Despite your determination not to let your dreams get the better of you, you had been worried about her
  10. 10.
    >She steps back and notes the look in your eyes
  11. 11.
    "Is everything okay?"
  12. 12.
    >She looks at you earnestly
  13. 13.
    >You sigh wearily, but nod
  14. 14.
"Just more dreams. I would do anything for an uninterrupted sleep at this point."
  15. 15.
    >Twilight nods sympathetically
  16. 16.
"Well, I think I might have found a way to send you home. Do you want the good news, or the bad news first?"
  17. 17.
    >You feel your ears perk up
  18. 18.
    "Good, of course."
  19. 19.
    >Her horn glows as she levitates one of the books up in front of her, something labelled "Equestrian Arcane Artifacts of the Pre-Classical Era"
  20. 20.
    >Flipping through it telekinetically, she turns it to face you
  21. 21.
    >Your heart sinks as you recognise the image on the page
  22. 22.
    >It's some kind of astronomical timepiece
  23. 23.
    >It looks like the one in your dream that was smashed to pieces alongside Twilight's unmoving body, although this one seems to be whole and undamaged
  24. 24.
"This is the Astrolabe. Or, technically, 'Star Swirl's Mystical Astrolabe'."
  25. 25.
    >You look up at her, her excitement palpable
  26. 26.
"From what I've been able to read about it, it was designed by Star Swirl the Bearded to stabilise and enhance planar transportation magic. With it, I think Princess Celestia should be able to send you back to your own world!"
  27. 27.
    >You nod, trying to ignore the growing sense of dread in the pit of your stomach
  28. 28.
    "And the bad news?"
  29. 29.
    >Twilight looks a bit more dejected at that question
  30. 30.
"Well... I don't know where it is. Many of the artifacts listed in this book are in the vault at Princess Celestia's palace, but when I went there to have a look at the manifest the Astrolabe wasn't on it. There isn't any mention of what happened to it after Star Swirl created it, either."
  31. 31.
    >She gestures to the piles of books behind her
  32. 32.
"And that's what I've been looking for, in the meantime."
  33. 33.
    >You nod, closing your eyes
  34. 34.
"So, we're plundering the library, then?"
  35. 35.
    >You mutter
  36. 36.
    >She nods, obviously having the time of her life here
  37. 37.
"Isn't it exciting? A lost mystical artifact created by THE Star Swirl the Bearded, and WE get to research where to find it!"
  38. 38.
    >You roll your eyes, but can't help but grin at her enthusiasm
  39. 39.
    "Alright, where do we start?"
  40. 40.
    >She levitates a stack of books over to you, and they land with a sickeningly deep thud on the marble floor
  41. 41.
"With these! After that, there's a few other sections I haven't gotten to yet..."
  42. 42.
    >You and Twilight spend the next several hours going through the stacks of books she has compiled so far, comparing notes and theories
  43. 43.
    >It's actually kinda fun, you have to admit
  44. 44.
    >Twilight makes for a very pleasant study buddy and although a lot of the books you're reading are quite dry, some of them have a few amusing tidbits in them
  45. 45.
    >You even find a book entirely on 'Stallion Enhancement', with some VERY detailed pictures in it
  46. 46.
    >You and Twilight spend a few minutes looking through it, blushing and giggling madly before you tuck it back away on the shelf
  47. 47.
    >You're perusing something called "Trixie's Incredible, Amazing, & Unredacted Feats of Otherworldly Magic" when Twilight speaks up quietly
  48. 48.
    "So Nona, tell me..."
  49. 49.
    >You look over at her, and there's a bit of a glint in her eye
  50. 50.
"Did you spend any time with Blue Cross before you left Ponyville?"
  51. 51.
    >You feel that familiar heat creep into your cheeks, and you look away quickly
  52. 52.
    >She waves a hoof dismissively
  53. 53.
"Don't be like that, I've seen the way you look at him."
  54. 54.
    >You sigh, and look back at her
  55. 55.
"...Yes. I saw him the night after you left for Canterlot."
  56. 56.
    >She nods smugly
  57. 57.
"He's a handsome stallion. Smart, too."
  58. 58.
    >She murmurs
  59. 59.
    >You nod sadly
  60. 60.
    >You can't see him again, though
  61. 61.
    >You just know if you did you wouldn't be able to leave, and going home is what you want more than anything
  62. 62.
    >Right?
  63. 63.
"It wouldn't work, Twilight. I have to return to my own world, so there's no point in forming... attachments."
  64. 64.
    >She looks at you, and you can see she's a little hurt
  65. 65.
"Attachments like me, you mean? And what about Zecora, or Applejack, or any of the others?"
  66. 66.
    >You grimace
  67. 67.
"I'm sorry, Twilight. I didn't mean it like that. It's just..."
  68. 68.
    >You shake your head
  69. 69.
"I can't afford to get distracted. If I fall in love here I can't just walk away from that, can I?"
  70. 70.
    >You blush, not having meant to say that last bit out loud
  71. 71.
    >Twilight looks at you sympathetically
  72. 72.
"Isn't it better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all? I'm going to miss you if you leave too, you know."
  73. 73.
    >That word hangs in the air, like a poison
  74. 74.
    >"If"
  75. 75.
    >An image forces its way into your head, worming past your defenses
  76. 76.
    >You're in Blue Cross' house, snuggled up with him on the couch, and tucked in with the both of you are three young foals, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the two of you
  77. 77.
    >You squeeze your eyes shut and shake your head, trying to clear it of your traitorous thoughts
  78. 78.
    >No! You can't think about that
  79. 79.
    >It's not going to happen, you won't let it
  80. 80.
    >But why not, Nona?
  81. 81.
    >It doesn't matter. That won't be your future, can't be your future
  82. 82.
    >But that image stays with you, the thought lingering in the back of your mind
  83. 83.
    >You open your eyes and stand up, suddenly feeling like you can't breathe in the musty library
  84. 84.
    >Twilight is looking at you, her eyes kind but concerned
  85. 85.
    "I need some fresh air."
  86. 86.
    >You walk past her, and disappear around the bookcase corner, making a beeline for the two grand oaken doors that mark the entrance to the library
  87. 87.
    >You're outside before you know it
  88. 88.
    >You didn't realise it, but you had been galloping to get there
  89. 89.
    >Closing your eyes, you take a deep breath, the chilly mountain air of Canterlot soothing to your weary mind
  90. 90.
    >You open them again, taking in the scenery outside of the library
  91. 91.
    >There are a few ponies walking the cobbled streets, the sound of their hoofsteps tickling your ears
  92. 92.
    >You love that sound
  93. 93.
    >Across the courtyard you can see, behind a number of opulent buildings, the spires of Celestia's Palace towering in the distance
  94. 94.
    >The white marble gleams in the sunlight, the same light illuminating the courtyard in heady shades of orange and yellow
  95. 95.
    >If...
  96. 96.
    >You hear hoofsteps coming up behind you, and you're not surprised as Twilight sidles up to you
  97. 97.
    >The two of you stand there silently for a moment before Twilight speaks
  98. 98.
"I'm sorry. It wasn't my intent to guilt-trip you into staying here or anything like that, Nona."
  99. 99.
    >You nod, and smile weakly
  100. 100.
"It's just that you fit in so well here! You could always stay-"
  101. 101.
    >She cuts herself off after seeing the morose look you give her
  102. 102.
"I'm sorry! I'll stop. I'm hungry, are you hungry? Let's go get something to eat, and then we can go back to researching."
  103. 103.
    >You sigh
  104. 104.
"Thanks, Twilight, for everything. I wish I could stay, but this place isn't my home."
  105. 105.
    >She looks into your eyes, searching
  106. 106.
    >And then nods sadly
  107. 107.
    "I understand."
  108. 108.
    >Together you walk down the library steps in silence, Twilight's words ringing in your ears
  109. 109.
    >If...
  110. 110.

  111. 111.
    ***
  112. 112.

  113. 113.
    >You're back at the library after having had lunch with Twilight, and the two of you had spent a few more hours searching through the stacks of tomes to no avail
  114. 114.
    >You're not much help at this point
  115. 115.
    >You're distracted, and irritable, and you know it
  116. 116.
    >And the fact that you're not much help is even more irritating
  117. 117.
    >But you can't get Twilight's words out of your head, any more than you could that image of you with a... a family
  118. 118.
    >You idly play with the ripped stubs of the pages in the book you've been pretending to read as you daydream about that, however unwillingly
  119. 119.
    >Wait what?
  120. 120.
    >You look down at the book, actually paying attention to it for the first time in what is probably an hour
  121. 121.
    >There are several pages torn from it, and looking closely the tears appear to be quite clean and straight
  122. 122.
    >You flip the book over and look at the cover
  123. 123.
"Star Swirl's 10,001 Cocktail & Mixed Drink Recipes."
  124. 124.
    >Guess he was quite a drinker
  125. 125.
    >Twilight glances up at you
  126. 126.
    "What?"
  127. 127.
    >You show her the book
  128. 128.
"Somepony's ripped a few pages from this drink recipe book. Must have been quite the cocktail."
  129. 129.
    >She looks closely at it, checking the cover and then examining the ripped pages before carefully reading a few of the entries
  130. 130.
    >You roll your eyes
  131. 131.
"Twilight, it can't be five o'clock yet. We can get some ciders later."
  132. 132.
    >She throws you a dirty look, clearly not appreciating the joke
  133. 133.
"Star Swirl was not that kind of pony. He wouldn't have had the time nor the inclination to write an entire book on cocktails, Nona."
  134. 134.
    >She points out an entry with her hoof, labelled "The Atomizer"
  135. 135.
"Besides, absinthe and cognac? That would taste terrible, the flavour profiles conflict completely."
  136. 136.
    >You blink, somewhat taken aback
  137. 137.
    >Maybe there was more to bookhorse than you had realised
  138. 138.
"No, this is code, Nona. And somepony must have figured that out, and taken the relevant pages with them."
  139. 139.
    >You look down at the book again
  140. 140.
"So, how do we know this has anything to do with the Astrolabe?"
  141. 141.
    >She shakes her head
  142. 142.
"We don't, but we've been here for hours. I've been here for days, and this is the best lead I've seen so far. Let's talk to the librarian, I'd like to see who checked this book out last."
  143. 143.
    >She turns to leave, and you follow after her, almost trotting to keep up
  144. 144.
"Shouldn't we start decoding it first to see if it's even relevant?"
  145. 145.
    >Twilight shakes her head as she marches, not looking at you
  146. 146.
"First we find the pony responsible for this. Then, once we have the missing pages, we can worry about decoding it."
  147. 147.
    >She says the word 'pony' with considerable distaste, like what she wanted to say was 'monster'
  148. 148.
    >You don't think you've ever seen her this pissed off
  149. 149.
    >You're at the librarian's desk in moments, thanks to Twilight's frantic pace
  150. 150.
    >There are two ponies there, a unicorn and an earth pony
  151. 151.
    >The librarian is a pastel-red earth pony, sporting a faded blonde mane shot through with streaks of silver curling around her head
  152. 152.
    >The nametag on her chest identifies her as 'Amber Quill'
  153. 153.
    >The unicorn must be her assistant, an exhausted-looking bluish grey stallion with a black mane
  154. 154.
    >The librarian looks imperiously down her muzzle at you and Twilight as you approach the desk
  155. 155.
    "Can I help you?"
  156. 156.
    >Twilight slams the book down on the table, probably a little more forcefully than is necessary
  157. 157.
    >Amber's assistant jumps, and looks over fearfully before going back to filing something
  158. 158.
"We need to know who signed this book out last."
  159. 159.
    >Amber looks unamused, reading the title with some amount of distaste
  160. 160.
    >She looks back up at Twilight
  161. 161.
"I'm sorry, but we don't give out that sort of information."
  162. 162.
    >Twilight looks like she's about to explode
  163. 163.
    >You step in before she can take out her anger on the poor librarian
  164. 164.
"Please, is there any chance you can make an exception? Somepony has vandalised this book, and we need to find out who."
  165. 165.
    >You nudge the book open to the ripped pages, and the librarian looks so shocked and horrified you're worried she might have a heart attack on the spot
  166. 166.
    >She recovers pretty quickly, though
  167. 167.
    >She sighs, leaning in conspiratorially
  168. 168.
"Okay, I can have a look at the records and tell you what I find. But you can't tell anypony, okay?"
  169. 169.
    >You nod solemnly
  170. 170.
    "We won't tell a soul."
  171. 171.
    >She seems satisfied with that, and turns away before heading into the back office
  172. 172.
    >You look to Twilight
  173. 173.
"Twilight, I know you're upset, but you're the brains of this operation and I need you to keep a level head."
  174. 174.
    >She takes a deep breath and nods
  175. 175.
"You're right. I just can't stand the thought of somepony getting away with this."
  176. 176.
    >She gestures at the book with a hoof
  177. 177.
    >The librarian returns from the office, carrying a piece of scrap paper in her mouth
  178. 178.
    >She drops it onto the desk and slides it over with a hoof
  179. 179.
"Here you are; one name and address. Last checked out ninety-four days ago. I hope you find the pony responsible for this, Twilight."
  180. 180.
    >Twilight nods seriously, and you both turn to leave, walking towards the library's entrance
  181. 181.
    >You look over at her as you walk, noting the expression on her face
  182. 182.
    >Somewhere between disgust and fury
  183. 183.
    "Twilight, I have an idea."
  184. 184.
    >You stop walking and it takes a few steps before she stops and looks back at you inquisitively
  185. 185.
"I think you should stay here and work on decoding that book. There's no reason for both of us to go, and I can handle this."
  186. 186.
    >She shakes her head
  187. 187.
"I want to catch this vandal, Nona. This book deserves justice."
  188. 188.
    >The book floats next to her menacingly
  189. 189.
"Twilight, please. I'm not going to be much help in decoding that anyway, and there's no time to lose."
  190. 190.
    >She sighs, seemingly unable to refute your argument
  191. 191.
    "Fine. But be careful, okay?"
  192. 192.
    >You nod, victorious
  193. 193.
"Please, this is a book vandal, not a murderer."
  194. 194.
    >Twilight stares at you, clearly not seeing the difference
  195. 195.
    >You roll your eyes, and hold up a hoof
  196. 196.
    "Okay, okay, I'll be careful."
  197. 197.
    >She nods, satisfied
  198. 198.
"Alright, good hunting. I'll get to work on this."
  199. 199.
    >She heads back into the library, leaving you standing alone near the entrance
  200. 200.
    >You look outside, your mind turning to the task at hand
  201. 201.
    >Despite your words to Twilight, you are somewhat worried
  202. 202.
    >Whoever stole the pages from that book must have known what they contained
  203. 203.
    >And if that was the case, they must be after the Astrolabe as well
  204. 204.
    >But who, and why?
  205. 205.
    >Of course, the other alternative is that somepony just saw some cocktails they liked and thought it'd be a hoot to steal them from the library
  206. 206.
    >But... the book was in the restricted section, so that seems unlikely
  207. 207.
    >There aren't many ponies allowed in there, and you had only gotten in yourself because Twilight was expecting you
  208. 208.
    >You sigh
  209. 209.
    >Celestia forbid things be uncomplicated
  210. 210.
    >You start walking, making your way towards the address on the paper
  211. 211.

  212. 212.
    ***
  213. 213.

  214. 214.
    >You're standing at the address, holding the piece of paper in your hoof and reading it over and over again
  215. 215.
    >Silver Mirage, the pony that last checked this book out, lives here, at 13 Regal Terrace
  216. 216.
    >... at this park
  217. 217.
    >What the fuck is going on here?
  218. 218.
    >You look down at the paper, then back at the address, then back again
  219. 219.
    >13 Regal Terrace, this is definitely the place
  220. 220.
    >A small, well-groomed park in between a few larger estate-style properties and a cobblestone courtyard
  221. 221.
    >You stop a particularly poncey-looking unicorn with a monocle walking past
  222. 222.
"Excuse me, is this 13 Regal Terrace?"
  223. 223.
    >You gesture at the park
  224. 224.
    >The unicorn looks over at the nearby streetsign that says 'Regal Terrace'
  225. 225.
    >Then at the small stone obelisk labelled '13' just inside the park's boundaries
  226. 226.
    >Then back to you
  227. 227.
"Madam, if this is your idea of a joke, it is a profound waste of my time. Good day."
  228. 228.
    >He walks off without another word
  229. 229.
    >What a prick
  230. 230.
    >You sigh, and sit down on one of the benches at the park's periphery, idly playing with the piece of scrap paper the librarian had given you
  231. 231.
    >It's been around three months since the book was checked out, according to the librarian
  232. 232.
    >It's possible that this was a residence at one point, and has since been rezoned or something
  233. 233.
    >But if that's the case, how are you supposed to find this Silver Mirage pony?
  234. 234.
    >Your hoof traces the edge of the paper, the slightly jagged edges tickling you despite the straightness of the cut
  235. 235.
    >Wait
  236. 236.
    >You look closely at the edge of the paper
  237. 237.
    >Not cut, torn
  238. 238.
    >The tear is identical to that of the missing pages from Star Swirl's coded book
  239. 239.
    >Oh shit
  240. 240.
    >You leap up from the bench, and begin galloping back towards the library
  241. 241.
    >A bullshit address and a fake name, on the piece of paper with a tear that perfectly matches the missing pages?
  242. 242.
    >It must have been Amber Quill, all along
  243. 243.
    >But why would she have left you such an obvious clue? Pretty sloppy stuff
  244. 244.
    >She seemed genuinely shocked when presented with the book
  245. 245.
    >But she did recover very quickly...
  246. 246.
    >You shake your head, you have to get back there as soon as possible
  247. 247.
    >Twilight has no idea, and if Amber gave you a fake address she would know it only would buy her a short amount of time
  248. 248.
    >Images of Twilight's motionless body assail your mind as you run
  249. 249.
    >She better fucking be okay
  250. 250.
    >It doesn't take you long to reach the library, you hadn't been in much of a hurry on the way to the park, but you are now
  251. 251.
    >You race up the steps and into the building, galloping down the main hall until you reach the restricted section
  252. 252.
    >You start hammering on the door frantically
  253. 253.
    >After a few tense moments, the door opens and Twilight stands on the other side
  254. 254.
    >You breathe a sigh of relief
  255. 255.
    >Twilight looks at you, noting your expression
  256. 256.
"Is everything okay, Nona? What did you find?"
  257. 257.
    >You nod
  258. 258.
"The address lead me to a park. It's a fake, and I bet the name is too."
  259. 259.
    >You hold out the sheet of paper in your hoof
  260. 260.
    "And look at this."
  261. 261.
    >Twilight looks at the paper, perplexed for a moment before her eyes widen
  262. 262.
    >She looks back at you
  263. 263.
"I think we should have a chat with Amber."
  264. 264.
    >She says, struggling to contain her anger
  265. 265.
"I didn't check to see if the librarian is still here. She must have known I would come back when I found out."
  266. 266.
    >Twilight nods, the betrayal in her eyes evident
  267. 267.
    "Let's go find her."
  268. 268.
    >The two of you set off, walking quickly down the main hall towards the front desk area
  269. 269.
    >You almost run into her assistant as he rounds the corner of a bookshelf
  270. 270.
    "Oh- sorry! Pardon me."
  271. 271.
    >He moves to walk past you, but you stick out a hoof to block his way
  272. 272.
    >He looks at you impatiently
  273. 273.
    "Where is Amber Quill?"
  274. 274.
    >He gestures in the general direction of the front desk
  275. 275.
"Where she usually is. Now if you don't mind..."
  276. 276.
    >You move out of his way, and keep walking as you share a glance with Twilight
  277. 277.
    >If she gave you a fake address why would she still be here?
  278. 278.
    >The two of you round the corner, making your way quickly towards the front desk
  279. 279.
    >Sure enough, she's seated where she was the last time you saw her, looking distinctly unconcerned
  280. 280.
    >She looks up as you approach the desk
  281. 281.
"Ah, you're back. Any luck finding your perpetrator?"
  282. 282.
    >You share another look with Twilight
  283. 283.
    "You could say that."
  284. 284.
    >You place the paper on the desk
  285. 285.
"The tears on this paper match the ones from the book exactly. Also, the name and address are fake."
  286. 286.
    >She looks at you, and where you had been expecting fear you instead see anger
  287. 287.
"Just what exactly are you implying, young miss?"
  288. 288.
    >You stare back at her
  289. 289.
"You know what I'm implying. You tore the pages from that book, and sent us on a wild goose chase to cover it up. You're the only other pony with access to the restricted area."
  290. 290.
    >She looks outraged, and opens her mouth to speak before shutting it again
  291. 291.
    >Her expression shifts to one of understanding, and disappointment
  292. 292.
    "Not the only other pony."
  293. 293.
    >Twilight looks at her
  294. 294.
    "What?"
  295. 295.
"My assistant, Midnight Spire. He also has access to those archives, and in addition to that..."
  296. 296.
    >She points at the piece of paper with a hoof
  297. 297.
"I have him magically prepare sheets of scrap paper for my notes. If this sheet matches those missing from the book... it was him."
  298. 298.
    >You stare at her suspiciously
  299. 299.
    >You don't really want to believe her, but her story makes sense
  300. 300.
    >Your thoughts shift back to seeing the assistant just moments ago
  301. 301.
    >He had seemed like he was in a hurry
  302. 302.
"Did he say he was going somewhere?"
  303. 303.
    >She nods
  304. 304.
"He asked if he could go home early today."
  305. 305.
    >She thinks for a moment
  306. 306.
"...Right after you brought that book up to the desk, actually. I had some more things for him to do, otherwise he would have left right then. If you go now, you can still catch him!"
  307. 307.
    >You nod, and start to turn away
  308. 308.
    "Thank you. And... sorry."
  309. 309.
    >She shakes her head
  310. 310.
    "Find that book vandal."
  311. 311.
    >You and Twilight turn away and gallop down the aisle, making your way for the main hall
  312. 312.
    >When you had seen Midnight Spire last, he was headed for the main doors
  313. 313.
    >You doubt he's actually stupid enough to head home, and you don't know where he would go otherwise
  314. 314.
    >So you'll just have to catch him before he gets there
  315. 315.
    >Charging outside into the bright sunlight, it's easy to forget the gravity of the task at hand
  316. 316.
    >It's a beautiful day out; the sun painting the whole courtyard a mellow orange. It's warm, but the breeze is cool
  317. 317.
    >You stop and take a deep breath
  318. 318.
    >Scanning the courtyard, you see a number of ponies walking casually, enjoying the weather
  319. 319.
    >But not the stallion in question
  320. 320.
    >To the right, the courtyard narrows to a residential lane with a number of grand and old-looking houses crowding the flanks of the street
  321. 321.
    >To the left, the courtyard opens up into a sort of market square, with a number of tents and market stalls; salesponies hawk their goods to crowds of prospective customers
  322. 322.
    >Now if you were trying to get out of sight quickly, where would you go?
  323. 323.
    >Twilight answers the question for you
  324. 324.
    "That way."
  325. 325.
    >She gestures to the market stalls
  326. 326.
"He's probably trying to lose us in the crowd."
  327. 327.
    >Makes sense
  328. 328.
"But what if he knew we would think that, and went the other way?"
  329. 329.
    >Twilight looks thoughtful for a moment
  330. 330.
    >She glances over
  331. 331.
    "Split up, then?"
  332. 332.
    >You nod
  333. 333.
"I'll take the market stalls. If I fly over, I should be able to spot him pretty easily."
  334. 334.
    >She raises an eyebrow
  335. 335.
"Are you sure? Your flying record isn't really the best, if you remember. No offense."
  336. 336.
    >You shake your head
  337. 337.
"None taken, you're partially right. My flying record is spectacular, it's the landings that are trouble."
  338. 338.
    >She looks even more concerned
  339. 339.
"Right, so you're just going to use random ponies to cushion your fall?"
  340. 340.
    >You wink at her
  341. 341.
"Not random ponies, one specific pony."
  342. 342.
    >Understanding dawns on her face, but the concern remains
  343. 343.
    >You put a hoof on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her
  344. 344.
"Trust me. I can steer, mostly. And if I don't see him I'm sure the cobblestones will break my fall."
  345. 345.
    >She looks at you like you're an idiot
  346. 346.
    "Well, have any better ideas?"
  347. 347.
    >Twilight studies your an expression for a moment
  348. 348.
    >She nods, and hugs you
  349. 349.
    >You return the hug warmly
  350. 350.
    "Good luck."
  351. 351.
    >She turns and gallops down the steps, heading to the right side of the courtyard
  352. 352.
    >You look up, studying the clouds
  353. 353.
    >They don't seem to be moving that fast, so hopefully that means it's not too windy
  354. 354.
    >You back up a few steps into the library, and flare your wings out to the sides, feeling the muscles flex
  355. 355.
    >You can already feel the slight breeze brushing through your feathers like sand through a sieve... it feels good
  356. 356.
    >Despite your apprehension about flying... you can't help but feel a rush of adrenaline from the thought of what you're about to do
  357. 357.
    >Guess that sort of feeling comes with the Pegasus body... your body
  358. 358.
    >That thought snaps you back to how absurd this whole situation is
  359. 359.
    >You haven't really even thought about the form you had on earth in a while
  360. 360.
    >Even the memories of that place feel distant, like a fading dream
  361. 361.
    >You realise with some concern that you feel... comfortable, in this body, now that you're used to it
  362. 362.
    >You push the thoughts away
  363. 363.
    >You have a job to do
  364. 364.
    >Before you can second-guess yourself, you spring forward into a gallop, your hooves barely finding purchase on the stone floor
  365. 365.
    >You launch yourself into the air as you reach the top step of the stairs, powering off your hind legs and beating your wings
  366. 366.
    >And just like that, you're airborne again
  367. 367.
    >You lean backwards, beating your wings and climbing
  368. 368.
    >Last time this was your undoing, but this time it's exactly what you want
  369. 369.
    >You soar over the courtyard and start banking left, feeling your wings strain as they catch the wind
  370. 370.
    >If you look far enough ahead, you can see the roofs of Canterlot's buildings laid out, stretching to the mountain slope like sharp, pointed hilltops
  371. 371.
    >But the view is not what you're up here for
  372. 372.
    >You look down as you level out, scanning the crowded streets
  373. 373.
    >The courtyard and open market stretch out before you, ponies milling around in various-sized groups as they go about their business
  374. 374.
    >You feel a very brief sense of vertigo as you imagine yourself as a grease-stain on the cobblestones
  375. 375.
    >But you manage to push the thought from your mind before it can take hold
  376. 376.
    >There are dozens, maybe even a hundred ponies at market today, and surprisingly you can make out most of the details of each one as you glide overhead
  377. 377.
    >You scan each pony briefly, trying to parse Midnight Spire from the technicolour horde down below
  378. 378.
    >He's so dark in comparison it shouldn't take long to spot him...
  379. 379.
    >But he doesn't seem to be anywhere, and you've almost completely passed over the market already
  380. 380.
    >Maybe he did go right after all
  381. 381.
    >You consider doubling back and seeing if Twilight has had any luck
  382. 382.
    >But you have this nagging suspicion that he's here...
  383. 383.
    >Maybe a change of perspective will help
  384. 384.
    >You gently bank right, before looping back around to the left and approaching the market from the other side
  385. 385.
    >You start scanning again, focusing on the areas of the market you couldn't see from your previous vantage
  386. 386.
    >Once again there's no sign of him...
  387. 387.
    >Damn, time to go the other way you suppose
  388. 388.
    >You're about to start heading back in the direction Twilight had gone when you see movement
  389. 389.
    >A suspiciously dark shadow under a parasol on the right side of the courtyard, behind a fruit cart
  390. 390.
    >You focus your eyes, staring at the shadow and...
  391. 391.
    >It moves!
  392. 392.
    >Midnight Spire slips out from under the parasol, moving cautiously down a side street away from the market, his head on a swivel as he walks
  393. 393.
    >The sun is to your back, and in his eyes
  394. 394.
    >So he probably hasn't seen you yet...
  395. 395.
    >Alright, time to go in for the kill
  396. 396.
    >You angle yourself forward, and start gaining speed perilously quickly
  397. 397.
    >Banking away from him initially, you turn back towards him and try to use the lift generated under your wings to slow you down a bit as you swoop down lower and lower
  398. 398.
    >But you're still gaining speed
  399. 399.
    >You level out, only a dozen feet off the ground
  400. 400.
    >But you're aimed directly at him, and he has his back to you
  401. 401.
    >You narrow your eyes, feeling like a hawk about to ambush its prey
  402. 402.
    >Ponies around the courtyard stop and look up at you, gawking as you rip by overhead
  403. 403.
    >The distance is closing, you're maybe fifty feet from him
  404. 404.
    >You lean back again, thinking back to your last attempt at flying
  405. 405.
    >Rainbow had done almost exactly this move, but right before she hit the ground she leaned back and flared her wings
  406. 406.
    >That must have been the missing ingredient...
  407. 407.
    >A pony in front of your target turns around and looks up in shock at you as you practically divebomb towards him
  408. 408.
    >Midnight's head whips around, and your eyes lock as he stares at you in horror
  409. 409.
    >His horn starts glowing as you hurtle towards him
  410. 410.
    >Too late, fucker
  411. 411.
    >You think to yourself
  412. 412.
    >You lean back, this time tilting your wings forward and flaring them out to catch the wind
  413. 413.
    >OH FUCK
  414. 414.
    >You feel your muscles strain and tense painfully as your whole bodyweight and its momentum are placed entirely onto your wings
  415. 415.
    >You grit your teeth, trying to slow yourself down before impact
  416. 416.
    >But it's not enough
  417. 417.
    >You feel your wings collapse as your muscles give in to the pressure
  418. 418.
    >You're assaulted once more with that vivid image of yourself as a grease-stain on the cobblestones as you continue to hurtle towards Midnight Spire
  419. 419.
    >It occurs to you that Rainbow Dash is essentially a top-tier athlete, whereas you've flown exactly three times now
  420. 420.
    >Oops
  421. 421.
    >It's actually Midnight that saves your ass this time
  422. 422.
    >There's a blinding explosion of light in front of you as he completes his spell right before you make impact
  423. 423.
    >You feel a powerful gust of air slow you down, but not quite quick enough
  424. 424.
    >You tuck your wings in, hoping to save them as you crash into him
  425. 425.
    >Both of you are sent sprawling as you tumble away, bouncing and rolling on the cobblestones at least three times
  426. 426.
    >You're left lying on the cobblestones, bruised and battered... but still alive
  427. 427.
    >You slowly, painstakingly, get to your hooves, your whole body aching
  428. 428.
    >You ruffle your wings out, wincing
  429. 429.
    >Thankfully it doesn't seem like they're broken
  430. 430.
    >Across from you is Midnight Spire, looking almost as beat up as you feel
  431. 431.
    >He gets to his hooves, looking around frantically
  432. 432.
    >A crowd is already starting to gather, the ponies murmuring to each other in hushed shock
  433. 433.
    "...id you see that...?"
  434. 434.
"...e's crazy! Somepony call the guards..."
  435. 435.
    >You're about to open your mouth when he looks at you
  436. 436.
    >And the fear in his eyes stops you
  437. 437.
    >You may have almost just killed both yourself and him, but that's not the kind of look you see in his eyes
  438. 438.
    >He's not afraid of you... It's almost like he's looking through you
  439. 439.
    >Before you can act, he takes advantage of the pause and turns, forcing his way through the crowd and galloping back up the street towards the market area
  440. 440.
    >Damnit!
  441. 441.
    >You curse yourself for being so soft
  442. 442.
    >When did that happen?
  443. 443.
    >You groan as you start to gallop after him, your legs feeling like they might fall right off your joints
  444. 444.
    >You push past the crowd of onlookers, nopony finding the nerve to stop you
  445. 445.
    >As the crowd parts you can see him up ahead, galloping down the street
  446. 446.
    >You force yourself to ignore the pain in your limbs as you run faster, trying to catch up
  447. 447.
    >But it's no use
  448. 448.
    >He's bigger, faster, and seemingly tougher than you are
  449. 449.
    >He vanishes around the street corner
  450. 450.
    >You gallop after him, and as you approach you can see a flash of light from up ahead
  451. 451.
    >Skidding around the corner, you come to a halt as you see a welcome sight
  452. 452.
    >Midnight Spire lies sprawled on the ground, trying to recover his faculties
  453. 453.
    >And standing over him is Twilight, the glow from her horn just starting to dissipate
  454. 454.
    >Bookhorse comes in clutch again, thank Celestia
  455. 455.
    >You start limping towards her, your aches and pains redoubling as the adrenaline fades
  456. 456.
    >You only make it a few steps before you hear a clanking sound behind you, and a heavy hoof lands on your shoulder
  457. 457.
"Ma'am, you're going to have to come with us."
  458. 458.
    >You turn to see a pair of gold-armoured ponies looking at you with thinly-veiled hostility, tensed and ready for a fight
  459. 459.
    >Shit
  460. 460.
    "Actually, she's with me."
  461. 461.
    >Twilight speaks up
  462. 462.
    >The guard looks over your shoulder at her
  463. 463.
"Is that so? Well, then you're under arrest too."
  464. 464.
    >Okay, this is not going well
  465. 465.
    >You raise your voice
  466. 466.
    "Look, we can explain."
  467. 467.
    >You gesture to Midnight Spire
  468. 468.
    "That pony is-"
  469. 469.
    >The guard shakes his head
  470. 470.
"Save it. We will take statements back at the castle."
  471. 471.
    >He shifts his attention back to Twilight, clearly recognising her
  472. 472.
"And as for you; just because you're Princess Celestia's apprentice, doesn't mean you're above the law."
  473. 473.
    >You look over your shoulder, and find Twilight actually still looks quite composed
  474. 474.
"As long as you take Midnight Spire in, too. He is a thief and vandal, and the librarian can corroborate that."
  475. 475.
    >The guard raises an eyebrow
  476. 476.
"We'll sort that out soon enough. Now, come along."
  477. 477.
    >Twilight looks back over at you, and that concerned expression you've become so familiar with returns to her
  478. 478.
    >She looks back at the guard
  479. 479.
"Very well. But I want to check Nona's injuries first."
  480. 480.
    >The guard snorts
  481. 481.
    >You can see a few more guards approaching from behind Twilight, fighting their way through the crowd
  482. 482.
"Fine. And after that, you come quietly."
  483. 483.
    >It's not a question
  484. 484.
    >Twilight nods
  485. 485.
    >She walks over to you as the guard starts talking to the others and helping Midnight Spire up
  486. 486.
    >One of them stands near the two of you, watching you like a hawk
  487. 487.
"Nona, are you okay? I knew I shouldn't have let you do this."
  488. 488.
    >You shake your head wearily
  489. 489.
"I'm fine, Twilight. And you didn't let me do anything, I insisted. Plus, it worked."
  490. 490.
    >She bites her lip, looking at you nervously
  491. 491.
"Well, at least let me check your injuries."
  492. 492.
    >You study her expression, sure that it's not necessary
  493. 493.
    >You're a bit battered but pretty confident you're fine
  494. 494.
    >But you can see she feels guilty
  495. 495.
    "Okay."
  496. 496.
    >She closes her eyes, lowering her horn towards you as it starts to glow
  497. 497.
    >You can feel a tingling sensation in your hooves, which slowly starts to spread out further into your legs and then your body
  498. 498.
    >It tickles, and you fight the urge to giggle as it spreads into your wings and neck
  499. 499.
    >And then it's gone
  500. 500.
    >Twilight opens her eyes and looks at you
  501. 501.
    >And... she's blushing?
  502. 502.
    "Well, everything good?"
  503. 503.
    >She nods sheepishly, not meeting your eyes
  504. 504.
"Yup, just fine! Hunky dory. Just some bruising, you'll be fine!"
  505. 505.
    >You stare at her suspiciously
  506. 506.
    "You're... sure?"
  507. 507.
    >Still, she won't meet your eyes
  508. 508.
"Uh-huh! Let's get moving, I'd like to get this next bit over with."
  509. 509.
    >You keep staring at her, trying to figure out what's going on in that head of hers
  510. 510.
    >Before you can think much more about it the guard interrupts your train of thought
  511. 511.
"Everything sorted? We need to get back to the castle and take statements."
  512. 512.
    >Twilight spins around to face him
  513. 513.
"Yes. Everything's fine, we're good to go."
  514. 514.
    >The guard nods, and looks to you expectantly
  515. 515.
    "Well?"
  516. 516.
    >You nod, and follow behind him slowly, your muscles screaming at you to stop and lie down
  517. 517.
    >Celestia help you, you have got to stop with this flying shit
  518. 518.
    >The guards surround you, Twilight, and Midnight Spire, and you begin walking to the castle, as a group
  519. 519.

  520. 520.
    ***
  521. 521.

  522. 522.
    >Once things start falling into place, it isn't long before you and Twilight are released
  523. 523.
    >You were placed in a 'dungeon cell', although frankly it was pretty quaint compared to some of the stuff you'd seen on Game of Thrones
  524. 524.
    >The guards took statements, and left for a couple of hours before coming back to let you out
  525. 525.
    >As promised, the librarian had corroborated your story
  526. 526.
    >You haven't seen her yet, but you have a feeling Celestia had something to do with it too
  527. 527.
    >Not like she was going to let her star pupil rot in jail for more than a few hours, right?
  528. 528.
    >You're in the infirmary (at Twilight's insistence, of course), the doctor on site just finishing cleaning up some of your scrapes and bruises
  529. 529.
    >She's a cute mare, but you can't help but wish it was Blue Cross instead
  530. 530.
    >You feel a pit in your stomach just thinking about him
  531. 531.
    >Twilight approaches as you're leaving the infirmary, giving you a big, but gentle, hug
  532. 532.
    >You return it gratefully
  533. 533.
    >She still seems really guilty, for some reason
  534. 534.
    "All patched up?"
  535. 535.
    >She asks quietly
  536. 536.
    >You nod
  537. 537.
"Just some bruises, like you said. I told you I was fine!"
  538. 538.
    >You were trying to alleviate some of her apparent guilt, but she still won't meet your eyes
  539. 539.
    >You both stand there quietly for a moment
  540. 540.
"...Twilight, what's wrong? You've been acting weird ever since you saw me in the market. I told you, it was my decision, and-"
  541. 541.
    >The look she gives you silences you immediately
  542. 542.
    >The look of a pony burdened with something that she's keeping from you
  543. 543.
    "What is it?"
  544. 544.
    >You ask softly
  545. 545.
    >She shakes her head, but still meets your eyes
  546. 546.
"Trust me, you don't want to know."
  547. 547.
    >You stare at her, trying to discern what she could possibly be thinking
  548. 548.
    >The moment stretches out
  549. 549.
"...Okay. If you're sure, then I trust you."
  550. 550.
    >Now she looks even more guilty
  551. 551.
    >You decide to switch topics
  552. 552.
"So, who do we have to thank for springing us out early?"
  553. 553.
    >She sighs
  554. 554.
    "Who do you think?"
  555. 555.
    >You raise an eyebrow
  556. 556.
    "Princess Celestia?"
  557. 557.
    >She nods
  558. 558.
"She wasn't super happy with how we handled that, but she understood. That guard was right, though. We should have gone to them instead of pursuing Midnight Spire ourselves."
  559. 559.
    >You shake your head
  560. 560.
"If we had gone to them it would have taken way too long, and we would have risked losing him. You know how important it is to me to get home."
  561. 561.
    >She gives you another look
  562. 562.
    "Trust me, I know."
  563. 563.
    >You continue studying her expression
  564. 564.
    >Just what is she not sharing with you?
  565. 565.
    >She looks away again
  566. 566.
"Well, the good news is that Midnight is still detained, and I received permission for the two of us to go question him."
  567. 567.
    >You smile, and nudge her with your shoulder
  568. 568.
"So, are we going to do a little good cop, bad cop kind of thing?"
  569. 569.
    >That brings a small smile to her face
  570. 570.
    >You both start walking away from the infirmary, making your way towards the dungeons
  571. 571.
"We'll see about that. Last time I saw him, he was freaking out. I'm not sure he'll be a very tough nut to crack."
  572. 572.
    >When you get to the cell, it seems she was right
  573. 573.
    >Midnight Spire looks defeated and broken, slumped against the cell wall listlessly
  574. 574.
    >He's pretty beat up, moreso than you had initially thought when you last saw him at the market
  575. 575.
    >One of his legs is bandaged, and he's covered with scratches from the cobblestones
  576. 576.
    >You feel a pang of guilt looking at him
  577. 577.
    >Maybe you had gotten a little caught up in trying to catch him. You hadn't meant to do much more than rough him up a bit
  578. 578.
    >You had been prepared to interrogate him earlier, but seeing him now you can't help but feel a little bad for him
  579. 579.
    >The guard lets you and Twilight in after a moment, and he looks up as he hears the cell door slam shut
  580. 580.
"...What, did you come here to finish the job?"
  581. 581.
    >You swallow your guilt and stare at him, trying to harden your heart
  582. 582.
"In a sense. Where are the missing pages from that book?"
  583. 583.
    >He looks away, shrugging
  584. 584.
"No idea. Isn't that the librarian's job?"
  585. 585.
    >Twilight steps up
  586. 586.
"We both know you vandalised that book and stole those pages, Midnight. We can trace those ripped pages back to you."
  587. 587.
    >He snorts
  588. 588.
"That could have been any unicorn."
  589. 589.
    >She shrugs
  590. 590.
"But you were the only unicorn that had access to those books. Spill it, where are they?"
  591. 591.
    >You can see him starting to withdraw; this isn't the right approach
  592. 592.
    >You think back to your encounter with him at the market; the look he gave you, like he was afraid of something else
  593. 593.
    >Maybe a softer touch is needed, after all...
  594. 594.
    >You step forward and put a hoof on Twilight's shoulder
  595. 595.
    >The two of you exchange a meaningful look, and after a moment she backs off
  596. 596.
    >You sit down in front of Midnight, trying to appear nonthreatening
  597. 597.
"Midnight, what exactly are you running from?"
  598. 598.
    >He looks up at you, the concern evident in his eyes
  599. 599.
    >And that same fear you saw in the market square
  600. 600.
"Listen, I'm sorry for how things turned out earlier. I didn't mean to hurt you like this, but I saw the look you gave me back then. You're afraid of something, and if you tell us then we can help!"
  601. 601.
    >You glance back at Twilight for encouragement, and after a moment you can see the anger fade from her eyes
  602. 602.
    >She nods, reluctantly
  603. 603.
    >Looking back to Midnight, you can see his resolve crumbling
  604. 604.
    >He's silent for a long moment
  605. 605.
    >He sighs
  606. 606.
"I just needed the money, okay? I got into some trouble with a couple of bad guys, and when I told them I worked for the library they said I could make up the difference."
  607. 607.
    >You nod slowly
  608. 608.
    "What kind of trouble?"
  609. 609.
    >He buries his face in his hooves
  610. 610.
"Do you have any idea how much I get paid? It's practically nothing. I thought I could make some extra money by doing some betting on the side and... it didn't go well."
  611. 611.
"So you thought you would steal some books and sell them to pay these ponies back?"
  612. 612.
    >He shakes his head
  613. 613.
"It's not like that. I owed them a lot of bits, and they said if I got them a few particular books from the restricted area of the library they would let it slide."
  614. 614.
    >You sigh
  615. 615.
    "But they didn't, did they?"
  616. 616.
    >He nods sadly
  617. 617.
"Once I delivered, they said that if I didn't keep doing things for them they would tell my boss and I'd be fired, or worse."
  618. 618.
    >Your heart sinks as you look at him
  619. 619.
"You already gave them those pages, didn't you?"
  620. 620.
    >He looks up at you, his eyes glistening
  621. 621.
    >You don't have to be psychic to tell what he's thinking
  622. 622.
    >You feel close to tears yourself
  623. 623.
"They were important, Midnight. My only chance, in fact."
  624. 624.
    >You sniff, and stand up
  625. 625.
    >He looks confused
  626. 626.
"But... It was just a bunch of drink recipes. That book didn't even have any business being in the restricted section, anyway."
  627. 627.
    >Twilight speaks up
  628. 628.
"It was a book by Star Swirl the Bearded. It was encoded, and you sold the pages we needed."
  629. 629.
    >He stares at her as you turn and walk towards the cell door
  630. 630.
    >She turns as you approach and walks with you as the cell door opens
  631. 631.
    "Wait."
  632. 632.
    >Midnight says
  633. 633.
    >You turn and look back at him, and you can see he's thinking hard
  634. 634.
    >He looks up at you
  635. 635.
"I read those pages, and I know what's on them. If you get me some paper and a quill I can reproduce them."
  636. 636.
    >You stare at him, not daring to let your hopes up
  637. 637.
    >Twilight answers, her tone dubious
  638. 638.
    "From memory?"
  639. 639.
    >He nods, and you can see he's not kidding
  640. 640.
"It's how I got the job in the first place."
  641. 641.
    >You and Twilight exchange a look
  642. 642.
    >She looks back at Midnight
  643. 643.
"And what do you want in exchange?"
  644. 644.
    >He glances around at the cell
  645. 645.
"Maybe a slight change in accommodation?"
  646. 646.
    >Twilight snorts
  647. 647.
"You reproduce those pages, and I'll do a whole lot better than that."
  648. 648.
    >For the first time since you've met him you actually see some hope creep onto his face
  649. 649.

  650. 650.
    ***
  651. 651.

  652. 652.
    >As it turns out, Midnight and Twilight have quite a bit in common
  653. 653.
    >They're both turbo nerds, love books, and share a surprising enjoyment of mixed alcoholic beverages
  654. 654.
    >Something that you wouldn't have suspected of either of them, if you didn't know better
  655. 655.
    >You had left the two of them in the castle's study
  656. 656.
    >Twilight had pulled some strings to get Midnight released, and he was busily scribbling away at some parchment, locked in concentration
  657. 657.
    >Meanwhile you had left Twilight poring over Star Swirl's encoded book, deeming yourself intellectually outmatched for the task
  658. 658.
    >You are standing on the crenellations of one of the tallest towers in the castle, admiring the view
  659. 659.
    >Your wings are stretched out, still plenty sore after the stunt you had pulled earlier
  660. 660.
    >But despite your scratches and bruises, you can't help but feel alive
  661. 661.
    >The breeze pushes gently past your feathers, and you find yourself unafraid of the height despite teetering on the edge a hundred feet in the air
  662. 662.
    >Canterlot is laid out before you, nestled in the mountains as the setting sun paints the city a vibrant hue of orange and yellow
  663. 663.
    >Beyond the cityscape, you can see Equestria stretch out far into the distance, and if you look carefully you can even make out the tiny sprawl of Ponyville
  664. 664.
    >Your thoughts meander, and you find yourself thinking about your flight over Canterlot
  665. 665.
    >Pegasi must have some pretty good vision... and apparently you're no exception to that
  666. 666.
    >There's no way you could have made out the details of each pony from that height with your old body
  667. 667.
    >Not to mention being able to discern Ponyville's shape from however many miles away you must be right now
  668. 668.
    >You sigh wistfully, the sight of the sun slowly dipping below the horizon indescribably calming
  669. 669.
    >If only you were in Ponyville now... maybe you could visit one more time and say goodbye to everypony before you go home
  670. 670.
    >...And see Blue Cross again, is what you mean
  671. 671.
    >You shake your head
  672. 672.
    >You can't go back. You made up your mind and if your resolve falters... You're not sure you'd be able to leave again
  673. 673.
    >But would that be so bad, Nona?
  674. 674.
    >You don't belong here, of course it would be bad
  675. 675.
    >But what if you already are home?
  676. 676.
    >Shut up, Anon. You've already made up your mind, and you're going home
  677. 677.
    "Um, what are you doing?"
  678. 678.
    >Twilight's voice stirs you from your thoughts
  679. 679.
    >You turn and see her standing at the entrance to the tower, looking up at you with concern
  680. 680.
"Relax, I'm not planning on jumping. Just enjoying the view, Twi."
  681. 681.
    >You hop down from the parapet, beating your wings once to soften your landing before folding them neatly to your sides
  682. 682.
    >She whistles
  683. 683.
    "Hey, first successful landing! Congratulations."
  684. 684.
    >You roll your eyes, but can't suppress a grin
  685. 685.
"Did you already finish decoding that book?"
  686. 686.
    >She shakes her head
  687. 687.
"I've made some progress on some of the earlier entries, but it's slow going."
  688. 688.
    >You nod appreciatively
  689. 689.
"Thanks, Twilight. You've gone far out of your way to help me, and I can't begin to pay you back."
  690. 690.
    >She shrugs nonchalantly
  691. 691.
"I don't know about you, but I've been having a lot of fun, Nona."
  692. 692.
    >You sigh
  693. 693.
    "...Yeah, me too."
  694. 694.
    >She turns to watch the sunset, the last rays peeking over the edge of the parapet
  695. 695.
    >You follow suit, and the two of you watch in silence for a moment as day gives way to night
  696. 696.
    >Your thoughts turn to the conversation you had had with her earlier
  697. 697.
    >She still hadn't told you what she was hiding, and your curiosity was beginning to grow
  698. 698.
"Twilight, what is it you're not telling me?"
  699. 699.
    >She shakes her head
  700. 700.
    "Nona, I told you-"
  701. 701.
    >You interrupt her
  702. 702.
"I know, 'I don't want to know', but I do. Didn't somepony once tell me that I could thank them by being honest?"
  703. 703.
    >She looks at you mournfully
  704. 704.
"Well, you can thank me for the fun we've had together by telling me what's on your mind."
  705. 705.
    >You know it's kind of a low blow, but you're dying to know what's so bad that she won't say anything about it
  706. 706.
    >She keeps looking at you with that sad expression, but you hold her gaze
  707. 707.
    >The silences stretches out until finally she looks away
  708. 708.
    "Nona..."
  709. 709.
    >You keep staring at her, even though she won't look back at you
  710. 710.
    "Twilight, please."
  711. 711.
    >Still she won't look at you, and you can see her fighting back tears
  712. 712.
"I-I don't know how to say this but... You're pregnant."
  713. 713.
    >You stand stock still, staring at her as those words ring in your ears
  714. 714.
    >The ground beneath you immediately feels very unsteady, and you're suddenly glad you're not on the parapet anymore
  715. 715.
    >You sit down heavily, overcome with dizziness
  716. 716.
    "W-what?"
  717. 717.
    >She finally looks at you again, that same mournful expression on her face
  718. 718.
"When I checked your injuries at the market... That's when I became aware of it."
  719. 719.
    >You stare at her in shock, remembering her reaction immediately after casting that spell
  720. 720.
"How...? That can't be possible, it's only been a few days since..."
  721. 721.
    >She shakes her head, tears in her eyes
  722. 722.
"The spell was infallible, Nona. I was checking for internal abnormalities and..."
  723. 723.
    >You feel like you're falling, like the whole world is slipping out from under you
  724. 724.
"I didn't want to tell you because I know how much you want to go home, but if you do..."
  725. 725.
    >She shrugs helplessly
  726. 726.
"There's no telling what will happen to..."
  727. 727.
    >She gestures at your stomach, and you put a hoof to it, feeling numb
  728. 728.
    >That familiar old image of you and Blue Cross in his house slips back into your mind, and you squeeze your eyes shut, trying to block it out
  729. 729.
    >How could you be so stupid?
  730. 730.
    >You open your eyes and stagger to your feet, suddenly feeling like you can't breathe
  731. 731.
    >Twilight says something, but it sounds like her voice is far away
  732. 732.
    >Your vision narrows to a tunnel as you stumble towards the stairwell,
  733. 733.
    >The dizziness intensifies, and...
  734. 734.
    >Darkness
  735. 735.

  736. 736.

  737. 737.

  738. 738.
    >You're standing on the crenellations once again, your thoughts muddy and confused
  739. 739.
    >It's dark out, you can only see the courtyard below thanks to the lanterns littering the area
  740. 740.
    >You hear Twilight's voice, interrupting your thoughts once more
  741. 741.
    >Looking over, you see she's standing on the battlements with you, tears in her eyes
  742. 742.
    >She's teetering on the edge, her front hooves hanging over the lip of the stone
  743. 743.
    >You reach out to her with a hoof
  744. 744.
"I told you I'm not going to jump. Get down Twilight, you're scaring me."
  745. 745.
    >She sniffles
  746. 746.
    "But I will."
  747. 747.
    >She murmurs, her voice thick with emotion
  748. 748.
    >You try to leap towards her, but it's like you're fighting through syrup to get to her
  749. 749.
    >The further you move towards her the further away she seems
  750. 750.
    >She turns away from the edge, her back to the empty expanse of space as the wind whips her mane around
  751. 751.
    "Twilight, get down from there!"
  752. 752.
    >You scream, your heart racing
  753. 753.
    >She leans back, and topples over the edge
  754. 754.
    >Without a thought you jump after her, spreading your wings as you plummet to the courtyard below
  755. 755.
    >The ground rushes up to meet her, the cobblestones a blur
  756. 756.
    >You've almost reached her, but you're not quick enough
  757. 757.
    >You stare into her purple eyes, her face a wicked grin as she falls
  758. 758.
    >You awaken with a start, sitting bolt upright and gasping for air
  759. 759.
    >You don't know where you are
  760. 760.
    >You look around, searching the room for something familiar
  761. 761.
    >It's a clinical setting, beds laid out in orderly rows with curtained railings above them
  762. 762.
    >You've been here before
  763. 763.
    >It all comes flooding back to you as you slump back into the bed
  764. 764.
    >You're in the infirmary again
  765. 765.
    >Really, Nona? Fainting? For Celestia's sake
  766. 766.
    >You groan, covering your face with your hooves
  767. 767.
    >And you're pregnant, apparently
  768. 768.
    >You know exactly who to thank for that, aside from yourself obviously
  769. 769.
    >You sigh, knowing that you don't really have anyone to blame other than yourself
  770. 770.
    >What are you going to do?
  771. 771.
    >Twilight's words ring in your ears
  772. 772.
    >"There's no telling what will happen to..."
  773. 773.
    >It
  774. 774.
    >Your foal
  775. 775.
    >Your feelings are a jumbled mess
  776. 776.
    >Dread, regret, terror... but also excitement, and hope
  777. 777.
    >You shake your head, not even remotely ready to process it all
  778. 778.
    >Time to do what you do best, and repress that shit
  779. 779.
    >One step at a time...
  780. 780.
    >You roll out of bed, landing briskly
  781. 781.
    >You feel a wave of dizziness, but it passes quickly
  782. 782.
    >You look around again, finding yourself alone in the infirmary
  783. 783.
    >Walking out of the empty room you find the receptionist's desk, behind which is a bored-looking yellow pony
  784. 784.
    >She looks surprised as you exit the patient's room
  785. 785.
    "Y-you shouldn't be up yet!"
  786. 786.
    >You wave her off
  787. 787.
"I'm fine... really. How long has it been since I was brought in here?"
  788. 788.
    >She looks at you, concerned, but answers anyway
  789. 789.
"A few hours. You were out cold."
  790. 790.
    >You sigh
  791. 791.
    "Where is Twilight?"
  792. 792.
    >She stands up
  793. 793.
"She said she was going to the study, but you really should-"
  794. 794.
    >You shake your head firmly
  795. 795.
    >Sleep sounds great, in theory, but for one thing you need to do something to take your mind off the bombshell you just coerced Twilight into dropping on you
  796. 796.
    >And for another thing you know what waits for you in your dreams, and you're sick to death of those at the moment
  797. 797.
"Trust me, resting is not what I need right now. Thank you for looking after me."
  798. 798.
    >She speaks up again
  799. 799.
    "But Twilight said you were-!"
  800. 800.
    >You whip around and fix her with a glare
  801. 801.
    "Said I was what?"
  802. 802.
    >She clams up, her eyes wide
  803. 803.
    "...Just drop it."
  804. 804.
    >You turn and walk off without another word, wandering in the direction of the study
  805. 805.
    >You feel a bit bad for taking your anger out on her, she was just doing her job
  806. 806.
    >But you can NOT give yourself time to sit around and think right now
  807. 807.
    >It doesn't take long to get to the study
  808. 808.
    >You nudge the door open gently, peering inside
  809. 809.
    >Twilight is sitting at a desk, scribbling notes while she pores over Star Swirl's book
  810. 810.
    >There's no sign of Midnight Spire
  811. 811.
    >You suppose that must mean he's completed his part of the bargain...
  812. 812.
    >Twilight doesn't notice you come in
  813. 813.
    >You softly clear your throat
  814. 814.
    >She starts, and whips around to look at you
  815. 815.
"Nona! What are you doing here? You should be resting."
  816. 816.
    >You nod
  817. 817.
"I know. But that's not happening any time soon."
  818. 818.
    >She looks at you sympathetically
  819. 819.
    "...Are you okay?"
  820. 820.
    >You sigh
  821. 821.
"No, I'm not. You were right, I didn't want to know."
  822. 822.
    >But that's not entirely true
  823. 823.
    >Some part of you is glad that you know
  824. 824.
    >You stuff the feeling down
  825. 825.
"I don't want to talk about it."
  826. 826.
    >She nods slowly, studying your expression
  827. 827.
    >You can tell she wants to say more, but she's as tactful as ever
  828. 828.
"I understand. Do you want to help me with decoding this book?"
  829. 829.
    >You nod, walking over to her
  830. 830.
    >You feel lucky to have her as a friend
  831. 831.
    >She's been there for you since you got to Ponyville, and pretty much everything she's done since has been to help you find a way home
  832. 832.
    >You're going to miss her if you leave
  833. 833.
    >If...
  834. 834.
    >You push the thought away
  835. 835.
    >Twilight slides a piece of paper towards you
  836. 836.
"I've got the basic structure of the cipher here, with the exception of these word combinations here, here, and here..."
  837. 837.
    >She goes into great detail explaining the structure of the cipher, and although you can't pretend to understand all of it, you think you grasp the gist of it
  838. 838.
    >It is actually pretty interesting, and you can't help but let Twilight's academic fervor rub off on you a bit
  839. 839.
    >The next several hours are spent painstakingly working through the book, line by line, page by page
  840. 840.
    >The further you get into the book the more interesting it becomes, as its contents are slowly revealed
  841. 841.
    >When you had originally picked it up, its purpose was not clear as anything other than a shitty drink recipe compendium
  842. 842.
    >But now with the cipher cracked; dates, names, places, and instructions were starting to become clear
  843. 843.
    >This book is an informational manual on some of the oldest magical artifacts in Equestria; and it goes into great detail on each one
  844. 844.
    >Except for one: the Astrolabe
  845. 845.
    >The entry exists, but contrary to every other entry in the book it is puzzlingly short
  846. 846.
    The Astrolabe
  847. 847.
Considered by some to be the 'Philosopher's Stone' of dimensional, planar, terrestrial, & multiversal arcane stabilisation. When used as a magical focus, one can channel their arcane energies into this device for unrivaled precision in the aforementioned methods of universal travel. It is not a device of my own making. It was discovered in an archeological dig site two hundred miles into the Saddle Arabian desert, in a sandstone temple that collapsed shortly after its discovery. I had it brought to my workshop for further study, and promptly sealed after its true nature was ascertained. In the wrong hooves, this device could spell disaster for Equestria, among countless other planes of existence. It is not to be sought after unless under the most dire of circumstances.
  848. 848.
    >You and Twilight sit in silence, Star Swirl's words sitting heavily like a pall in the air
  849. 849.
    >She's the first one to speak
  850. 850.
    "Star Swirl's workshop..."
  851. 851.
    >Your ears perk up
  852. 852.
"Do you know where it is?"
  853. 853.
    >She nods, but her expression remains doubtful
  854. 854.
    "We're in it, right now."
  855. 855.
    >You keep watching her, sensing there's more
  856. 856.
"But it's not that simple, is it?"
  857. 857.
    >She looks over at you, distracted
  858. 858.
"I basically grew up in this study, Nona. I've read every book in here, poked through every nook and cranny."
  859. 859.
    >You nod slowly
  860. 860.
"And there are no hidden compartments or secret rooms?"
  861. 861.
    >She shakes her head
  862. 862.
"There are, but I've already scoured through them."
  863. 863.
    >You're quiet for a moment
  864. 864.
"...You think he's referring to a different workshop?"
  865. 865.
    >She shrugs, giving you a curious look
  866. 866.
"He was well-known for being a bit paranoid. I think it's time we spoke to Princess Celestia."
  867. 867.
    >You look at her doubtfully
  868. 868.
    >Your last conversation with the princess had been less unpleasant than you had expected, but you still weren't keen on speaking to her again
  869. 869.
    >She rolls her eyes
  870. 870.
"Listen, I know you don't want to ask her for help, but she was Star Swirl's pupil. Who better to ask?"
  871. 871.
    >You sigh
  872. 872.
    >She's right, obviously, as usual
  873. 873.
    "...Alright, let's do it."
  874. 874.
    >You mull over your last conversation with the Solar Princess as you help Twilight pack up all the loose papers
  875. 875.
    >She had not been what you had expected, but there had been a wisdom in her eyes that you could not deny
  876. 876.
    >Twilight also seems preoccupied as you pack up
  877. 877.
    >As you tuck the last of the notes into Star Swirl's book, you study her expression
  878. 878.
    >As always you could see the gears turning
  879. 879.
    >After what happened last time you're not sure you want to ask, but prudence was never really one of your strong suits
  880. 880.
    "What's on your mind?"
  881. 881.
    >You ask quietly
  882. 882.
    >She looks up at you like she had forgotten you were there
  883. 883.
    >She packs the book into a saddle bag and gestures for you to follow her
  884. 884.
    >You continue watching her as you walk, knowing she'll answer once she's gathered her thoughts
  885. 885.
    >After a few minutes she does
  886. 886.
"Midnight Spire. Or more accurately, the ponies he gave those pages to."
  887. 887.
    >You stay quiet for a moment, considering the possibilities
  888. 888.
"Like you said in the library, they must have known what was on those pages."
  889. 889.
    >She stops and looks at you
  890. 890.
    "But what if they didn't?"
  891. 891.
    >You raise an eyebrow, confused
  892. 892.
"What? That doesn't make any sense, why would they want those pages unless they knew what was on them?"
  893. 893.
    >She nods, a strange spark in her eyes
  894. 894.
"And what would a bunch of small-time shakedown artists want with a book written by a legendary conjurer?"
  895. 895.
    >You shrug
  896. 896.
"They were probably just going to sell it to a collector or something."
  897. 897.
    >She turns and keeps walking, and you follow after her
  898. 898.
"That book doesn't have any value to anypony unless they know what the Astrolabe is, and what it's capable of."
  899. 899.
    >It clicks in your head, finally
  900. 900.
"You think that they were paid specifically to acquire those pages, by somepony who wants the Astrolabe."
  901. 901.
    >You say slowly
  902. 902.
    >She nods, seeming satisfied
  903. 903.
"The Astrolabe wouldn't be useful to a couple of criminals. I think there's somepony else pulling the strings here, somepony who has the capacity and the will to use it."
  904. 904.
    >You stay quiet as you walk, her words sinking in
  905. 905.
    >The entry in Star Swirl's book had been short, but pretty clear: In the wrong hooves, the Astrolabe could spell disaster for Equestria
  906. 906.
    >Twilight stops, and you nearly walk into her
  907. 907.
    >You look up and find yourself staring at a massive set of grand doors, which could only lead to Celestia's throne room
  908. 908.
    >Twilight turns to face you again, her expression serious
  909. 909.
"If somepony else is looking for the Astrolabe, it's important we get it first."
  910. 910.
    >You nod
  911. 911.
"...And not just because it's my only way home."
  912. 912.
    >You finish
  913. 913.
    >She watches you for a moment, then gives you a cheeky grin
  914. 914.
    >You raise an eyebrow again
  915. 915.
"You were testing me, weren't you?"
  916. 916.
    >She nods smugly
  917. 917.
"If it's any consolation, you passed with flying colours."
  918. 918.
    >You sigh
  919. 919.
    >No wonder she was being so weird about that whole conversation
  920. 920.
    >She turns to one of the guards standing outside of the throne room
  921. 921.
"Is Princess Celestia in? We have urgent business."
  922. 922.
    >The guard nods, and looks over at his compatriot
  923. 923.
    >Together, they push the doors open, revealing the throne room
  924. 924.
    >Guess there are some advantages to being the Princess' student
  925. 925.
    >A rich red carpet paves the way to a grand set of stairs leading up to Celestia's throne, in a large chamber edged with marble columns
  926. 926.
    >Decorated stained glass windows line the walls, depicting various scenes of Equestrian history in vibrant colours
  927. 927.
    >You find yourself wishing it was light out still, that you might see how the light filtering through the stained glass plays on the marble floor
  928. 928.
    >Standing in front of the throne is Celestia herself, just as radiant as the first time you met her
  929. 929.
    >Her kaleidoscopic mane waves in an invisible breeze, one that can't be possible in the castle
  930. 930.
    >She's speaking to one of her royal guards as you and Twilight approach, and she looks up as he walks away
  931. 931.
    >A warm smile graces her face
  932. 932.
"Twilight Sparkle! And I see you have brought a new friend."
  933. 933.
    >Twilight bows, and you follow suit, awkwardly
  934. 934.
    >It occurs to you that you never mentioned your previous meeting with the princess to Twilight, and it seems like it might be a bit late for that now
  935. 935.
    >Twilight stands
  936. 936.
"Yes, your majesty. That is what I've come to speak to you about, actually. This is Nona."
  937. 937.
    >Celestia looks over at you, and you flinch slightly
  938. 938.
    >But you don't see that fearsome guardian who confronted you earlier
  939. 939.
"A pleasure to meet you Nona. Twilight speaks very highly of you."
  940. 940.
    >You try to stifle your embarrassment
  941. 941.
    "Th-thank you, your majesty."
  942. 942.
    >You mumble
  943. 943.
    >It's clear that she's not going to mention your previous encounter, and you arrive at the conclusion that you shouldn't either
  944. 944.
    >She looks back to Twilight
  945. 945.
"What can I help you with, my student?"
  946. 946.
    >Twilight takes a deep breath
  947. 947.
"We're looking for the Astrolabe, to help Nona get home. We've learned that Star Swirl hid it in one of his workshops."
  948. 948.
    >Celestia nods knowingly
  949. 949.
"I had heard. The Astrolabe would be of great aid in returning Nona home. I assume you've already turned the castle upside down?"
  950. 950.
    >Her eyes dance with mirth
  951. 951.
    >Twilight smiles nervously
  952. 952.
"I know that it's not here, nor in the castle vault."
  953. 953.
    >Celestia nods thoughtfully
  954. 954.
    >After a moment she speaks again
  955. 955.
"He always did have plans for every possible scenario. There is a place he used to go, when he needed time alone to think."
  956. 956.
    >Twilight looks elated, but you wait for the other shoe to drop
  957. 957.
    >Celestia continues
  958. 958.
"An old laboratory in what is now the Everfree forest. It was abandoned centuries ago, and I would be surprised if much of it remains."
  959. 959.
    >There it is
  960. 960.
    >Twilight looks a little crestfallen, but she perks up quickly enough
  961. 961.
"And you think that's the most likely location for him to have hidden the Astrolabe?"
  962. 962.
    >Celestia nods sagely
  963. 963.
    >Twilight stands still for a moment, her brow furrowed in thought
  964. 964.
    "Then that's where we'll go."
  965. 965.
    >Celestia's expression doesn't change, but you can see a hint of pride in those ancient eyes
  966. 966.
    >She nods
  967. 967.
"Good luck, Twilight. I'll have a map drawn up for you by tomorrow."
  968. 968.
    >You and Twilight bow again, then turn to leave
  969. 969.
    >It's a long walk to the throne room doors, and it gives you some time to think
  970. 970.
    >Celestia had seemed like a totally different pony the first time you met her
  971. 971.
    >Although to be fair, at that point all she knew about you was that you were a traveller from another world, and that you might be dangerous
  972. 972.
    >She also didn't acknowledge your first meeting in front of Twilight, and acted like this was the first time you had met
  973. 973.
    >Maybe that's a side of herself that she doesn't show to most ponies, one that they aren't ready for
  974. 974.
    >It must be tough... You can't imagine being that old, outliving all of your friends and family repeatedly
  975. 975.
    >You're nearly at the throne room doors at this point, and to your surprise a familiar face is waiting for you at the entrance
  976. 976.
    >Midnight Spire stands near the guards, watching you as you approach
  977. 977.
    >Twilight also looks surprised to see him
  978. 978.
"I thought you had gone to bed?"
  979. 979.
    >He screws up his face a bit
  980. 980.
    "Couldn't sleep."
  981. 981.
    >There's something you could empathise with
  982. 982.
    >The three of you start walking, no particular destination in mind
  983. 983.
    >Twilight is pretty quiet, you can see she's busy thinking
  984. 984.
    >Midnight is too, but for different reasons...
  985. 985.
    "Midnight, what did you do?"
  986. 986.
    >He looks up at you, surprised
  987. 987.
    >His cheeks colour, and he looks away again, embarrassed
  988. 988.
"I... May have overheard your conversation in the study."
  989. 989.
    >You raise an eyebrow, practically having smelled his guilt
  990. 990.
    >You look over at Twilight
  991. 991.
    "You hear that, Twi?"
  992. 992.
    >She nods, but her face says otherwise
  993. 993.
"Midnight says he's in love with you, and he wants to get married and run away together."
  994. 994.
    >She nods again
  995. 995.
    "Mhmm, sounds great."
  996. 996.
    >She mutters absently
  997. 997.
    >You roll your eyes, and look back over to Midnight, who looks absolutely mortified
  998. 998.
    "What exactly did you overhear?"
  999. 999.
    >He looks a bit nervous
  1000. 1000.
"Well, something about some artifact that can control space and time? It sounds pretty serious."
  1001. 1001.
    >You nod
  1002. 1002.
"It is. So you're going to have to keep your mouth shut about this one, okay?"
  1003. 1003.
    >He stops walking, and you turn to look at him
  1004. 1004.
"Actually... I want to come with you."
  1005. 1005.
    >This finally manages to grab Twilight's attention
  1006. 1006.
    "What? No, absolutely not."
  1007. 1007.
    >He shakes his head
  1008. 1008.
"It's my fault that it's taken you this long to find it in the first place. I want to help make things right."
  1009. 1009.
    >You and Twilight exchange a glance, and you can't quite suppress a grin
  1010. 1010.
    "I think he likes you."
  1011. 1011.
    >You whisper to Twilight
  1012. 1012.
    >Her cheeks go red immediately
  1013. 1013.
    >She throws you a dirty look, before looking back at Midnight
  1014. 1014.
"Are you sure? It's probably going to be dangerous. We're not the only ponies after the artifact."
  1015. 1015.
    >He nods without hesitation
  1016. 1016.
"Then you need all the help you can get, right?"
  1017. 1017.
    >You look to Twilight
  1018. 1018.
"Your call, Twi. You're the expedition leader."
  1019. 1019.
    >She thinks for a moment, then nods, once
  1020. 1020.
"Okay. We leave tomorrow morning, so let's go pack some things and then get some sleep."
  1021. 1021.
    >Midnight looks relieved, and the three of you start walking again
  1022. 1022.
    >The next hour or so is spent gathering supplies for the journey
  1023. 1023.
    >Twilight is pretty thorough when it comes to gathering the necessary equipment
  1024. 1024.
    >You feel no small amount of embarrassment from how casually you had blundered into the Everfree when you first arrived in Equestria
  1025. 1025.
    >Travel rations, a rope and grapnel, an archeologist's toolkit, even a compass and flint and steel among many other things
  1026. 1026.
    >Twilight basically preps the three pairs of saddlebags for the apocalypse
  1027. 1027.
    >And to be fair, according to Star Swirl's journal, that's allegedly what's going to happen if the wrong pony gets their hooves on the Astrolabe
  1028. 1028.
    >You're lying in bed, in one of the castle's many spare rooms
  1029. 1029.
    >All the preparations made, you're left to your thoughts as you stare at the ceiling
  1030. 1030.
    >Thoughts which, for the first time in years, turn to your mother
  1031. 1031.
    >A topic which you had considered forbidden, even to think about, when you were still on Earth
  1032. 1032.
    >It's been more than twenty years since she abandoned you and your dad, but the wound still stings like the day after
  1033. 1033.
    >She had left when you were young; so young that you had only vague memories of her
  1034. 1034.
    >A smile, a laugh, the smell of lavender
  1035. 1035.
    >That was all you had
  1036. 1036.
    >Your dad had refused to say just about anything about her when you were older, leaving you to guess at what had happened
  1037. 1037.
    >What kind of mother abandons her child?
  1038. 1038.
    >You find yourself holding a hoof over your stomach, without thinking about it
  1039. 1039.
    >You look down at your belly
  1040. 1040.
    >You know that you won't be showing for months, at least
  1041. 1041.
    >But you can almost feel the life inside you; a sacred, vital spark suffused with a primal bond that you can't separate yourself from
  1042. 1042.
    >A life that will be snuffed out, should you return to Earth
  1043. 1043.
    >You choke back a sob, hardly able to stomach the thought
  1044. 1044.
    >How can you even think of going home, knowing what you'd be leaving behind?
  1045. 1045.
    >But home is all that you know, all that you deserve
  1046. 1046.
    >This place is too good for you, you know deep down that that's true; it has to be
  1047. 1047.
    >All of your sins, and these goddamn ponies just keep treating you like you're one of them
  1048. 1048.
    >An innocent soul, pure of heart and free of guilt
  1049. 1049.
    >You squeeze your eyes shut, trying to hold back the tears
  1050. 1050.
    >But they come anyway, tracing delicate lines down your softly furred cheeks to the down pillow below
  1051. 1051.
    >You know what you have to do, but not if you have the strength to do it
  1052. 1052.
    >You cry yourself to sleep, thoughts of your future family intermingling with memories of that which you no longer have
  1053. 1053.

  1054. 1054.
    ***
  1055. 1055.

  1056. 1056.
    >You awaken to a soft kiss, laid on your lips gently and lovingly
  1057. 1057.
    >You open your eyes, only to gaze into the beautiful amber that could only belong to Blue Cross
  1058. 1058.
    "Good morning, love."
  1059. 1059.
    >You sigh happily, overjoyed to wake up to his voice again
  1060. 1060.
    "Good morning."
  1061. 1061.
    >You breathily reply, blinking away your sleepiness
  1062. 1062.
    >You slowly lean out of bed, your expectant middle reducing your mobility considerably
  1063. 1063.
    >What was this, your third? Fourth? It wasn't a huge number, but it was hard to keep track somehow
  1064. 1064.
    >You chalk it up to baby brain
  1065. 1065.
    >You can smell breakfast already, something flowery and sweet; probably daffodil pancakes, Blue's favourite
  1066. 1066.
    >He helps you out of bed, ever the gentlecolt
  1067. 1067.
    >You kiss him again, wondering what you would do without him
  1068. 1068.
    >He breaks it early, although it clearly pains him
  1069. 1069.
"Come on, breakfast is almost ready and the foals are behaving, for now."
  1070. 1070.
    >You laugh, following him into the kitchen
  1071. 1071.
    >It's pure chaos, the children having gotten into an argument in the thirty seconds their father was absent
  1072. 1072.
    >One of the pegasi flies near the ceiling, raining blueberries down on his unicorn brothers, who are telekinetically firing back at him with bits of pancake
  1073. 1073.
    >Blue steps in right away, raising his voice and returning order to the kitchen
  1074. 1074.
    >Celestia, it's hot when he does that
  1075. 1075.
    >You help gather up some of the loose berries and pancake shreds while Blue magicks the Pegasus foal down from the ceiling
  1076. 1076.
    >Despite the chaos, you're practically glowing
  1077. 1077.
    >You can't imagine being anywhere else
  1078. 1078.
    >Your youngest approaches you as you scoop up the last berry
  1079. 1079.
    >He looks up at you adoringly, his purple eyes glowing
  1080. 1080.
"Why would you leave me, mama?"
  1081. 1081.
    >You take a step back, the hair on the back of your neck standing up
  1082. 1082.
    "W-what?"
  1083. 1083.
    >He takes a step forward
  1084. 1084.
    "Why would you leave me?"
  1085. 1085.
    >Your eyes wide, you look to Blue Cross
  1086. 1086.
    >He stares back at you, his expression disgusted and angry, his eyes violet
  1087. 1087.
    "You abandoned us, Nona."
  1088. 1088.
    >You shut your eyes, tears gathering in your eyes
  1089. 1089.
    "No... No, please."
  1090. 1090.
    >You open your eyes, and find yourself face to face with a beautiful woman... a human woman
  1091. 1091.
    >Her dark hair falls around her face in wavy tresses
  1092. 1092.
    >Her eyes are a deep amaranthine
  1093. 1093.
    >Your lip twitches, your hurt drowning in a growing rage
  1094. 1094.
    >You take a step towards her
  1095. 1095.
"This is too far, you bitch."
  1096. 1096.
    >She doesn't say anything, the corner of her mouth quirking up into a cocky grin
  1097. 1097.
    >You leap towards her, your mind set on beating the piss out of her
  1098. 1098.
    >You hoof almost connects with her face and...
  1099. 1099.
    >She leaps back, her eyes wide with concern
  1100. 1100.
"Nona, what is wrong with you?"
  1101. 1101.
    >Her eyes are purple, but not the glowing purple you remember...
  1102. 1102.
    "It's me, calm down!"
  1103. 1103.
    >Twilight's voice cuts through your rage, like cool water splashed on your face
  1104. 1104.
    >You stop, confused, and take a look at your surroundings
  1105. 1105.
    >You're in the your room, morning light filtering through the stained glass window
  1106. 1106.
    >Twilight stands in front of you, just out of reach
  1107. 1107.
    >Her stance is defensive, her horn just starting to glow
  1108. 1108.
    >You sit down heavily as your legs give out
  1109. 1109.
    >Your head hangs low, the nightmare still fresh in your mind
  1110. 1110.
    >You sigh shakily
  1111. 1111.
    "S-sorry... I'm sorry, Twilight."
  1112. 1112.
    >The glow around her horn subsides as she approaches you cautiously
  1113. 1113.
    >You look up at her, and find her eyes sympathetic but wary
  1114. 1114.
    "Another nightmare?"
  1115. 1115.
    >She murmurs
  1116. 1116.
    >You nod, still trying to shake the image of your foal with those horrible glowing eyes
  1117. 1117.
    >She puts a hoof on your shoulder, gently
  1118. 1118.
"No, I'm sorry, Nona. In all the excitement about Star Swirl's workshop I completely forgot about your nightmares."
  1119. 1119.
    >You take a shaky breath
  1120. 1120.
"N-not... Not your fault. I did too."
  1121. 1121.
    >She gives you a hug, which you return weakly
  1122. 1122.
    >Leaning back, she holds you at arm's length
  1123. 1123.
"We're going to fix this, one way or another, okay?"
  1124. 1124.
    >You nod, exhausted
  1125. 1125.
"Thanks, Twi. I assume it's time to go?"
  1126. 1126.
    >She studies your face for a second, then nods
  1127. 1127.
"Yes. Midnight Spire is waiting for us in the courtyard."
  1128. 1128.
    >You take a moment to collect yourself
  1129. 1129.
"Okay. I'm okay, just give me a few minutes to gather my things and I'll meet you out there."
  1130. 1130.
    >She looks at you quietly for a moment, her indecision palpable, before she nods her assent
  1131. 1131.
    "Alright."
  1132. 1132.
    >She turns and leaves, giving you another worried glance before rounding the corner and vanishing further into the castle
  1133. 1133.
    >You take another deep breath, trying to master yourself
  1134. 1134.
    >You find yourself more disturbed by the former part of that dream than latter, surprisingly
  1135. 1135.
    >At this point you are somewhat jaded when it comes to your dreams; you always assumed there was something awful waiting for you
  1136. 1136.
    >But that moment when you had awoken to Blue Cross' eyes had affected you more than you'd like to admit
  1137. 1137.
    >It had brought your guard down, it's saccharine beauty defeating your skepticism
  1138. 1138.
    >And the sight of your foals, adorable and happy... Before being corrupted by that witch
  1139. 1139.
    >It made your heart ache
  1140. 1140.
    >You shake your head, trying to muster your resolve
  1141. 1141.
    >You don't belong here; that future is not a possibility and that fucking witch was toying with your mind
  1142. 1142.
    >Standing, you walk to the saddlebags resting at the foot of your bed
  1143. 1143.
    >You don't actually have anything to gather, everything neatly packed into the bags the night before
  1144. 1144.
    >But you had needed a moment to yourself after that dream
  1145. 1145.
    >You had almost attacked Twilight in your earlier state, and you found that more disturbing than anything
  1146. 1146.
    >The nightmares were definitely getting worse
  1147. 1147.
    >You throw the saddlebags over your back, and take one last look around the room before walking out the door and down the hall
  1148. 1148.
    >Twilight and Midnight are waiting for you in the courtyard, as promised
  1149. 1149.
    >Midnight gives you a look as you approach
  1150. 1150.
"Sweet Celestia, Nona, you look awful."
  1151. 1151.
    >You yawn
  1152. 1152.
"Thanks, Midnight, I love to hear that."
  1153. 1153.
    >He turns red
  1154. 1154.
    "No, sorry, I just meant-"
  1155. 1155.
    >You wave him off
  1156. 1156.
"Don't worry about it, I didn't sleep well. Let's just get going."
  1157. 1157.
    >He stares at you, his mouth open, before deciding to shut it
  1158. 1158.
    >You stop and look expectantly at Twilight
  1159. 1159.
    >She studies you for a moment, before turning and starting to walk out of the courtyard
  1160. 1160.
    "Alright, let's go."
  1161. 1161.
    >You and Midnight fall in behind her
  1162. 1162.
    >Midnight looks a little upset by your earlier interaction
  1163. 1163.
    >You still felt a little bad for roughing him up yesterday
  1164. 1164.
    >You suppose you should smooth things over with him
  1165. 1165.
"Thank you for transcribing those pages, Midnight. We would have been lost without your help."
  1166. 1166.
    >He shakes his head, not looking at you
  1167. 1167.
"You wouldn't have been in that spot if it weren't for me to begin with."
  1168. 1168.
    "Well, I appreciate it anyway."
  1169. 1169.
    >He sighs
  1170. 1170.
    "It's a start."
  1171. 1171.
    >You watch him admiringly, your respect for him growing
  1172. 1172.
"You were always planning on replacing all the books you stole, weren't you?"
  1173. 1173.
    >His cheeks colour slightly
  1174. 1174.
"...Yes, I was. But I shouldn't have stolen them to begin with, either."
  1175. 1175.
    >You nod
  1176. 1176.
"Have you always had such a good memory?"
  1177. 1177.
    >He nods in turn
  1178. 1178.
"Ever since I was a foal. It has its advantages."
  1179. 1179.
    >Maybe you can convince Twilight to get his job back after this is all over
  1180. 1180.
    >You look up, recognising the shape of the Canterlot train station
  1181. 1181.
    >Twilight approaches the ticket booth and starts talking with the pony behind the desk
  1182. 1182.
    >Your thoughts turn to the journey ahead, and it occurs to you that you're going to have to pass through Ponyville again to get to the Everfree Forest
  1183. 1183.
    >Not exactly the most enticing thought, given the temptations that linger there
  1184. 1184.
    >Well, it was actually incredibly enticing, and that was the problem
  1185. 1185.
    >The three of you board the train and get settled, and a few minutes later it rumbles to life and lurches forward
  1186. 1186.
    >Twilight gets Midnight up to speed on the specifics of the task at hand, while you gaze out the window
  1187. 1187.
    >Your eyes settle on the tiny speck of Ponyville, unable to make out any details despite your impressive vision
  1188. 1188.
    >You idly wonder what Blue Cross is up to right now
  1189. 1189.
    >Probably working. He really seems to enjoy his job, and that's something that you admire him for
  1190. 1190.
    >And something for his foals to look up to him for
  1191. 1191.
    >You grimace, and do your best to suppress the thought
  1192. 1192.
    >You tune back into what Twilight was saying
  1193. 1193.
"..nd so we don't know who else is looking for it, either."
  1194. 1194.
    >Midnight nods thoughtfully, and he's quiet for a moment
  1195. 1195.
"What exactly is so dangerous about the Astrolabe, anyway?"
  1196. 1196.
    >Twilight shrugs
  1197. 1197.
"The book was pretty vague about that. Maybe it's just too powerful?"
  1198. 1198.
    >Midnight nods again, slowly
  1199. 1199.
"Maybe... Maybe planar travel isn't supposed to be easy."
  1200. 1200.
    >Twilight raises an eyebrow, waiting for him to continue
  1201. 1201.
    >He looks up at her earnestly
  1202. 1202.
"Well, from what you've told me, it sounds like this thing makes dimensional travel easy and precise. If it were to get into the wrong hooves, it would be like leaving your front door wide open. Who knows who or what would just come and go from your house as they please?"
  1203. 1203.
    >Twilight studies him thoughtfully, and you can see a burgeoning respect for him in her eyes
  1204. 1204.
    >She seems to sense you staring at her, and turns to look at you, blushing
  1205. 1205.
    >You give her a cheeky smile, but you don't say anything as you look at Midnight
  1206. 1206.
"Since you seem to be so on the ball, any theories as to who might be after it, Midnight?"
  1207. 1207.
    >He stares at you blankly
  1208. 1208.
"...How would I know? I don't exactly associate with evil wizards, thank you very much."
  1209. 1209.
    >You nod
  1210. 1210.
    "Just mobsters, then."
  1211. 1211.
    >He goes bright red again
  1212. 1212.
    >You giggle, and stop him before he can respond
  1213. 1213.
"I'm kidding. We're glad to have you aboard, Midnight."
  1214. 1214.
    >He sighs, not meeting your eyes
  1215. 1215.
"Yeah. I'm just trying to make up for my mistakes."
  1216. 1216.
    >You put a hoof on his shoulder
  1217. 1217.
"And I appreciate that, trust me."
  1218. 1218.
    >You turn back to Twilight
  1219. 1219.
"Anyway, any ideas for killing some time? It's gonna be a long train ride."
  1220. 1220.
    >Twilight looks positively superior
  1221. 1221.
"Of course! I planned for everything."
  1222. 1222.
    >Her horn glows, and she levitates a small box out her saddlebags
  1223. 1223.
    >She opens it, and dumps a small stack of cards onto the seat
  1224. 1224.
    >You suppress another giggle
  1225. 1225.
    >Of course she planned for everything. What a nerd she is
  1226. 1226.
    >You can't help but wonder what other kinds of things she packed into everypony's saddlebags
  1227. 1227.
    >You make a mental note to go through yours later
  1228. 1228.
    >The train starts picking up speed as Twilight magically shuffles the deck, and starts dealing out the cards
  1229. 1229.
    "So."
  1230. 1230.
    >She says
  1231. 1231.
    "Ever play 'Stallion Showdown'?"
  1232. 1232.
    >You sigh
  1233. 1233.
    >This might be a longer train ride than you had anticipated
  1234. 1234.

  1235. 1235.
    ***
  1236. 1236.

  1237. 1237.
    >The sun hangs low in the sky as the train pulls into Ponyville and comes to a rest
  1238. 1238.
    >The brakes hiss as the ponies on board begin getting up off the seats and filing out the doors
  1239. 1239.
    >As it turns out, Twilight is much more of a card shark than you had expected
  1240. 1240.
    >Meanwhile Midnight Spire was awful at cards
  1241. 1241.
    >You would think a pony with a memory as good as his would dominate in that area, but Twilight had won almost every single round
  1242. 1242.
    >It had started out as a free-for-all, but once it became evident that Twilight was much better at 'Stallion Showdown' than you or Midnight, it quickly became you two versus her
  1243. 1243.
    >She had only lost a few rounds, and even then it was only because she had been dealt some of the worst cards in the game
  1244. 1244.
    >Midnight was a good sport and lost graciously, and despite yourself you had had fun as well
  1245. 1245.
    >It had sufficiently taken your mind off of your worries for the duration of the trip, although they were now staring you in the face in the form of Ponyville's humble train station
  1246. 1246.
    >You, Twilight, and Midnight hop off the train with your saddlebags, and you turn to face her
  1247. 1247.
"So, what's the plan, Twi? Straight to the Everfree?"
  1248. 1248.
    >She shakes her head
  1249. 1249.
"It's going to be getting dark soon. We should stay here for the night and head out tomorrow morning."
  1250. 1250.
    >You sigh, having dreaded that answer but knowing she was right
  1251. 1251.
    >You wanted to avoid an encounter with Blue Cross but you knew that traversing the Everfree Forest at night was a bad idea
  1252. 1252.
    >It was dangerous enough in the daytime
  1253. 1253.
    >Twilight gives you a sly look
  1254. 1254.
"Besides, I'd like to say hi to some of my friends before tramping off into the Everfree. Isn't there somepony you would like to see before you go?"
  1255. 1255.
    >You give her a dark look
  1256. 1256.
    >Of course you wanted to see Blue, that was exactly why you were avoiding him
  1257. 1257.
    >She puts a hoof up in surrender
  1258. 1258.
"Okay, say no more! Let's go drop our things off at the library."
  1259. 1259.
    >She turns and starts walking further into town, you and Midnight trailing behind
  1260. 1260.
    >He looks quite preoccupied with his own thoughts, not saying a word as you walk through town
  1261. 1261.
    >A couple of the ponies greet Twilight and you as you walk into town, and you introduce them to Midnight Spire
  1262. 1262.
    >He's pretty distracted, his mind clearly somewhere else as he shakes hooves with some of Ponyville's residents
  1263. 1263.
    >Maybe you should ask him what's on his mind...
  1264. 1264.
    >You've almost reached the library at this point, and you're starting to wonder what to do with the rest of the day
  1265. 1265.
    >Walking around Ponyville is a no-go if you're trying to avoid Blue Cross
  1266. 1266.
    >He has a habit of popping up even where you wouldn't expect to see him
  1267. 1267.
    >On the other hoof, this is possibly your last chance to spend some time in Ponyville before you leave for the Everfree
  1268. 1268.
    >You gaze at Twilight as she walks happily towards her home, the great boughs of the tree coming into sight over the rooftops of the other houses
  1269. 1269.
    >You glance at Midnight, his expression still distant and somewhat vacant
  1270. 1270.
    >Starting to look like you're on your own for this one
  1271. 1271.
    >A few minutes later and you're at the library
  1272. 1272.
    >Twilight pushes the door open, and Spike greets the three of you excitedly
  1273. 1273.
    >He looks pretty well rested
  1274. 1274.
    >Must have used all his free time for napping, the cheeky little bastard
  1275. 1275.
    >Twilight introduces him to Midnight and the three of you drop off your supplies before Twilight turns to you
  1276. 1276.
"Well, I'm going to go track down my friends and catch up. Care to join me?"
  1277. 1277.
    >You shake your head with a smile
  1278. 1278.
"No, you go ahead Twi. I think I'm just going to take it easy for tonight."
  1279. 1279.
    >She nods, and looks over to Midnight
  1280. 1280.
    "And what about you?"
  1281. 1281.
    >He looks up at her, startled
  1282. 1282.
"Oh, uh... no, thank you. I think I'm going to rest up too."
  1283. 1283.
    >She nods again
  1284. 1284.
"Alright, suit yourself! We'll be staying here tonight, so make yourself at home. I'm not sure when I'll be back."
  1285. 1285.
    >She gives you a hug, and then Midnight, too, to his surprise
  1286. 1286.
    >With that she disappears upstairs, presumably to get ready
  1287. 1287.
    >Midnight's expression returns to that distracted, thoughtful mask
  1288. 1288.
    >You think about asking him what's bothering him, but ultimately decide to leave him alone for now
  1289. 1289.
    >You briefly consider just staying in the library for the rest of the night, but after spending several hours on that cramped train you'd rather be outside right now, despite the risks
  1290. 1290.
    >You head out the door, leaving Midnight Spire to his thoughts
  1291. 1291.
    >As has become your habit the last few times wandering Ponyville, you don't pick a destination; just letting your hooves carry you where they will
  1292. 1292.
    >And where they carry you, as it turns out, is a small park on the west side of town, facing the setting sun
  1293. 1293.
    >You spy an unoccupied park bench and make your way over, sitting down as the sun slowly descends towards the horizon
  1294. 1294.
    >A gentle breeze rustles the leaves on the trees and bushes in the park, and the last birdsong of the day is just starting to fade
  1295. 1295.
    >There are only a hoofful of other ponies here, one of them a young mother who is watching her foal chase some butterflies
  1296. 1296.
    >You find you hoof resting protectively over your middle as you watch the two of them
  1297. 1297.
    >She looks so happy, like she couldn't imagine being anywhere else
  1298. 1298.
    >Your thoughts turn to the Everfree forest, and the ruin that supposedly waits for you there
  1299. 1299.
    >Supposing you find the Astrolabe and bring it back to Princess Celestia, then what?
  1300. 1300.
    >She whisks you back to Earth, and everything goes back to normal
  1301. 1301.
    >...And there's no telling what happens to your... Your foal
  1302. 1302.
    >A shiver runs through you as you consider Twilight's words to you last night
  1303. 1303.
    >Are you really going to sacrifice the life within you just to go back?
  1304. 1304.
    >There isn't really any other option though, is there?
  1305. 1305.
    >And what happens if you were to return to your old body while pregnant, anyway?
  1306. 1306.
    >You tell yourself that you're just concerned with your own safety, but you know it's a lie
  1307. 1307.
    >When Twilight told you that you were pregnant it had changed everything
  1308. 1308.
    >There was more to this decision than just you, now
  1309. 1309.
    >You groan and cover your face with your hooves
  1310. 1310.
    >That news had made everything a lot more complicated
  1311. 1311.
    >You want to say that you wish she hadn't told you, but you know that's a lie too
  1312. 1312.
    >A small, slightly muffled voice makes its way through your thoughts
  1313. 1313.
    "Excuse me, miss?"
  1314. 1314.
    >You open your eyes and find yourself face to face with the little foal you had just seen earlier
  1315. 1315.
    >He's holding a flower in his mouth; a small daffodil
  1316. 1316.
    >He places it gently on the bench next to you
  1317. 1317.
"You looked sad, so I brought you this."
  1318. 1318.
    >He says, beaming at you
  1319. 1319.
    >You immediately feel a lump forming in your throat
  1320. 1320.
    "Oh... Thank you so much."
  1321. 1321.
    >He nods happily, like it was the most natural thing in Equestria
  1322. 1322.
    >You look up at his mother, as she watches proudly from afar
  1323. 1323.
    >She smiles at you, and you smile back
  1324. 1324.
    >It's an easy smile, bittersweet but genuine
  1325. 1325.
    "You're welcome!"
  1326. 1326.
    >The little foal says, before turning and galloping back off to his mom
  1327. 1327.
    >You carefully pick the daffodil up with your hooves and consider it as he races away
  1328. 1328.
    >He reaches his mom and leaps up to hug her, as she catches him and laughs, and they start heading out of the park
  1329. 1329.
    >The sun is now just touching the horizon, casting those familiar long shadows across the landscape
  1330. 1330.
    >The birds are silent; the only sound in the park that of the wind rustling through the trees
  1331. 1331.
    >You gaze at the flower, tracing a hoof along its yellow-orange petals
  1332. 1332.
    >Sighing, you gingerly tuck the daffodil behind your ear and hop off the bench, before turning towards town and picking up a walk
  1333. 1333.
    >As the sky begins to darken, your thoughts turn, as they often tend to now, towards your dreams
  1334. 1334.
    >You don't fully recall them all, only bits and pieces
  1335. 1335.
    >But one in particular stands out; when you were sleeping over at Rainbow Dash's house
  1336. 1336.
    >That had been, by your estimation, the worst of the nightmares you had had since arriving in Equestria
  1337. 1337.
    >You're not sure how it could be possible, but you had felt like you were going to die in that dream
  1338. 1338.
    >And you had a feeling that the possibility of dying then had been all too real
  1339. 1339.
    >You had heard somewhere in your past life that dreams have power, and perhaps that was true...
  1340. 1340.
    >You are almost certain at this point that the witch that sent you here is the one responsible for the dreams that torment you nightly
  1341. 1341.
    >But when you had stayed at Rainbow's house, some of the scenes the witch had shown you had been visions of the future
  1342. 1342.
    >You had recognised them because you had watched the show, and although it had been many years ago you still remembered some of the events
  1343. 1343.
    >Your memories of that dream are fragmented and scattered, and it had been entirely too overwhelming at the time for you to process or parse any of the events
  1344. 1344.
    >But maybe if you saw it again, and you were ready this time... Maybe it could give you some kind of idea of what to do next
  1345. 1345.
    >Princess Luna had saved you that night, and although the nightmares had still persisted beyond her intervention, you hadn't felt like you had that night; like they might actually kill you
  1346. 1346.
    >Which meant that she was still protecting you, to some degree
  1347. 1347.
    >Something you were obviously intensely grateful for
  1348. 1348.
    >But an idea was forming in your head, and for it to work... She was going to have to rescind her protection for a bit
  1349. 1349.
    >You look up at the library as you arrive, stopping to gaze at the elegant grand boughs of the tree, the still-living wood stretching up into the sky
  1350. 1350.
    >Light spills from the windows, the inside looking cozy and warm
  1351. 1351.
    >You walk up to the door, suddenly feeling a sense of déjà vu
  1352. 1352.
    >But this time there are no voices from within, just a peaceful quietude
  1353. 1353.
    >You open the door, figuring you're a little past knocking at this point
  1354. 1354.
    >Spike is sitting at the table in the center, his little claws holding a quill as he scribbles away at a piece of paper
  1355. 1355.
    >He looks up at you as you come in and shut the door behind you
  1356. 1356.
    "Hi, Nona!"
  1357. 1357.
    >You smile at him
  1358. 1358.
"Hi, Spike. What have you got there?"
  1359. 1359.
    >He glances at the paper
  1360. 1360.
"Oh, this? Twilight wanted me to catalogue some of the artifacts mentioned in this book she brought from Canterlot."
  1361. 1361.
    >You immediately recognise Star Swirl's coded book in front of him, along with the sheets of notes you and Twilight had compiled while working on the cipher
  1362. 1362.
"Well, good on you, Spike. It's a bit of a dry read."
  1363. 1363.
    >He sighs
  1364. 1364.
"Yeah, now that Twilight's back in town I'm back to work."
  1365. 1365.
    >You glance around and notice Midnight Spire isn't in the library anywhere you can see
  1366. 1366.
    >You had meant to ask him what was bothering him when you got back
  1367. 1367.
    >You look back to Spike
  1368. 1368.
    "Hey, where's Midnight?"
  1369. 1369.
    >Spike has gone back to scribbling notes on the paper
  1370. 1370.
"Uh... He went out. Said he had something to do? I dunno, he seemed pretty distracted."
  1371. 1371.
    >You raise an eyebrow
  1372. 1372.
    "Did he say where?"
  1373. 1373.
    >Spike shakes his head, not looking up
  1374. 1374.
    "Nope."
  1375. 1375.
    >Well that's weird
  1376. 1376.
    >You didn't think Midnight had any business in Ponyville, or knew anypony here really
  1377. 1377.
    >Not that you were really one to judge
  1378. 1378.
    >You shrug and head upstairs, opening the balcony doors to look outside
  1379. 1379.
    >Pale moonlight bathes the town in silver and blue as the moon starts to rise above the distant horizon
  1380. 1380.
    >You duck back inside, looking downstairs to make sure Spike is still preoccupied
  1381. 1381.
    >You're not sure why, but you feel a little silly for what you're about to do
  1382. 1382.
    >You sneak back out onto the balcony and turn your eyes once again to the moon
  1383. 1383.
    >Closing your eyes, you sit back on your haunches and put your hooves together awkwardly
  1384. 1384.
    >You take a deep breath
  1385. 1385.
"Um... Princess Luna. If you can hear me, I need your help."
  1386. 1386.
    >You crack one eyelid open
  1387. 1387.
    >The moon is unchanged, facing you coldly
  1388. 1388.
    >You close your eye again
  1389. 1389.
"If... If I could speak to you, tonight, I have a request that might be... difficult."
  1390. 1390.
    >You stay like that for a moment, waiting for some kind of response, or sign, or something; anything
  1391. 1391.
    >A curious voice from behind you interrupts the moment
  1392. 1392.
    "What are you doing?"
  1393. 1393.
    >You whip around, blushing furiously, and find Midnight Spire watching you with a bemused expression
  1394. 1394.
    >How did you not hear him come in?
  1395. 1395.
"N-nothing, I was just... Enjoying the night air!"
  1396. 1396.
    >He nods slowly, clearly unconvinced
  1397. 1397.
    "Uh huh..."
  1398. 1398.
    >Embarrassed, you decide to change the topic
  1399. 1399.
"Where did you get off to? I thought you said you were going to stay here for the rest of the day."
  1400. 1400.
    >His cheeks redden slightly
  1401. 1401.
"Yeah, I said that and then... I don't know. I didn't feel like being inside after that train ride. I also wanted to pick up some more supplies for tomorrow."
  1402. 1402.
    >You look at him curiously
  1403. 1403.
"What, did Twilight forget to pack something? That doesn't seem like her."
  1404. 1404.
    >He shrugs
  1405. 1405.
"No, I just wanted some muffins for the trip."
  1406. 1406.
    >The two of you are silent for a moment, Midnight looking lost in thought again
  1407. 1407.
    >You step inside, and close the balcony doors
  1408. 1408.
    >Midnight speaks up as you turn back around
  1409. 1409.
"Nona... This artifact we're after, why do you need it?"
  1410. 1410.
    >You stare at him, not sure what to say
  1411. 1411.
"Back at the castle, you said it was your only chance. Why is that?"
  1412. 1412.
    >He looks at you earnestly, and as much as your paranoia screams at you not to tell him, you're getting tired of keeping secrets
  1413. 1413.
    >You sigh
  1414. 1414.
"I'm not from this world. I was sent here against my will, and I need the Astrolabe to get back."
  1415. 1415.
    >He looks surprised at this revelation, but not as shocked as you would expect
  1416. 1416.
"... I see. So you just want to get back to your family? I can understand that."
  1417. 1417.
    >You shrug
  1418. 1418.
"Yeah, kinda. I don't have any family left for me, there."
  1419. 1419.
    >He looks somewhat confused
  1420. 1420.
"Alright, but you must have other things to go back to...?"
  1421. 1421.
    >You open your mouth to reply, but find your mind is blank
  1422. 1422.
    >What DO you have to go back to? Some acquaintances, a job that you hate, a world that doesn't care for you?
  1423. 1423.
    >You close your mouth
  1424. 1424.
    >Damnit, why does he have to hit you right where it hurts?
  1425. 1425.
"It's just where I belong, Midnight, okay?"
  1426. 1426.
    >The words sound hollow, even to you
  1427. 1427.
    >He looks a bit taken aback
  1428. 1428.
"Okay, sorry. I was just curious. It's not every day you meet an extradimensional traveler."
  1429. 1429.
    >He smiles weakly
  1430. 1430.
    >You sigh
  1431. 1431.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bite your head off. I've just got a lot on my mind right now."
  1432. 1432.
    >He nods slowly
  1433. 1433.
"Well, maybe we should catch an early night. It's going to be a long day tomorrow."
  1434. 1434.
    >You shake your head
  1435. 1435.
"You go ahead, I've got to speak with Twilight first."
  1436. 1436.
    >You feel a bit bad not warning him about your nightmares, but you're not in the mood to open that can of worms
  1437. 1437.
    >You leave him behind as you walk downstairs to the main floor
  1438. 1438.
    >You scan the room as you walk down the stairs, looking for something to occupy your time until Twilight comes back
  1439. 1439.
    >As it happens it's not necessary
  1440. 1440.
    >You've been considering some of the books on the shelf for a few minutes and the door swings open
  1441. 1441.
    >Twilight sweeps in and closes it behind her, looking a bit tired but satisfied
  1442. 1442.
    >Spike acknowledges her entrance with a huge yawn
  1443. 1443.
    >She turns and regards him with some surprise
  1444. 1444.
"Spike! What are you still doing up?"
  1445. 1445.
    >He puts down the quill and stretches
  1446. 1446.
"You said this was important! I wasn't about to slack off. Besides, I've been sleeping most of the time you've been gone."
  1447. 1447.
    >She looks at him adoringly
  1448. 1448.
"Aw, Spike. You didn't have to do that! It is important, but so is getting enough sleep."
  1449. 1449.
    >You take this opportunity to pipe up
  1450. 1450.
"He's lying, he's been at this since you left!"
  1451. 1451.
    >Spike blushes, throwing you a dirty look
  1452. 1452.
    >Twilight glances up at you, indignantly
  1453. 1453.
"Hey, you! I was just talking with the girls and they said you left a pouch of bits at each of their houses!"
  1454. 1454.
    >You blink
  1455. 1455.
    >Honestly you had completely forgotten you had done that
  1456. 1456.
    >Twilight continues
  1457. 1457.
"I respect your sense of integrity, Nona, but that was totally unnecessary. We were all happy to help you out!"
  1458. 1458.
    >You shake your head
  1459. 1459.
    >You have a scant few regrets from your time in Ponyville, and that was not one of them
  1460. 1460.
    >Frankly most of them had to do with flying
  1461. 1461.
"I just wanted to carry my own weight, Twilight. I appreciate everything you and your friends have done for me and I wanted to express that. Just accept the gift!"
  1462. 1462.
    >She sighs, capitulating
  1463. 1463.
    >Her eyes alight on the daffodil tucked neatly behind your ear
  1464. 1464.
"Hey, I like the flower. It's cute."
  1465. 1465.
    >You blush
  1466. 1466.
"Thanks. Anyway, I wanted to talk to you about something."
  1467. 1467.
    >You continue
  1468. 1468.
    >Her ears perk up, that ever-curious spark in her eye igniting
  1469. 1469.
    >You're interrupted by another of Spike's huge yawns
  1470. 1470.
    >Twilight looks at him pityingly
  1471. 1471.
"Go to bed, Spike. You've done a great job."
  1472. 1472.
    >He nods sleepily, and hops off the stool he was sitting on to shuffle off to his bed
  1473. 1473.
    >You walk over to Twilight as she eyes you curiously
  1474. 1474.
    "So..."
  1475. 1475.
    >You start
  1476. 1476.
"I didn't really have a moment to mention this earlier, but Princess Luna has been kinda-sorta protecting me from the worst of my dreams."
  1477. 1477.
    >She doesn't say anything, but her expression changes to one of superiority
  1478. 1478.
    >One that says "I told you so"
  1479. 1479.
    >You roll your eyes
  1480. 1480.
"Yeah, yeah, anyway. I think if I can get her to stop protecting me, just for tonight, I might be able to glean some valuable information from my dreams."
  1481. 1481.
    >She raises an eyebrow, looking slightly horrified
  1482. 1482.
"What could possibly be worth that, Nona?"
  1483. 1483.
    >You look away, finding it hard to meet her gaze
  1484. 1484.
"Well... I think that I know exactly why I'm having these nightmares. I think there is somepony who is responsible for them. The same somepony who sent me here."
  1485. 1485.
    >She considers you for a moment, then nods slowly
  1486. 1486.
"And why do you think making yourself more vulnerable to this pony is a good idea?"
  1487. 1487.
    >You squirm under her perceptive eyes
  1488. 1488.
"I think... That some of the visions I've seen in my dreams are of the future."
  1489. 1489.
    >Her eyes widen, and she sits down on the stool at the desk
  1490. 1490.
"Nona, this is a bad idea. Many ponies have gone mad obsessing over the future."
  1491. 1491.
    >You sit down on the floor next to her
  1492. 1492.
"But think about it! If I can try to tap into these visions, maybe it will give us an edge in trying to get to the Astrolabe!"
  1493. 1493.
    >That's not the only reason you want a peek at the future, but you don't feel like sharing that just yet
  1494. 1494.
    >She looks at you doubtfully
  1495. 1495.
"Or you'll go crazy, or worse. I'm telling you, it's not a good idea."
  1496. 1496.
    >You meet her eyes, trying to muster your hardest expression
  1497. 1497.
"I think it's worth the risk. Who knows what we're walking into tomorrow?"
  1498. 1498.
    >She searches your eyes for a long time, her expression a mix of concern and curiosity. But there is a hint of admiration there, too
  1499. 1499.
    >You hold her gaze, your resolve set
  1500. 1500.
    >After a long pause, she sighs and nods curtly
  1501. 1501.
"Alright. I can see you're determined to give this a shot."
  1502. 1502.
    >You smile
  1503. 1503.
"Thank you, Twilight. I know it's not going to be pleasant for you to deal with, but I think it will be worth it."
  1504. 1504.
    >She smiles at you uncertainly, clearly still concerned for your safety
  1505. 1505.
"I trust you Nona. I still don't think this is a good idea, but... I'll support you."
  1506. 1506.
    >You lean forward and wrap her in a tight hug
  1507. 1507.
    >You feel a rush of emotion at how lucky you are to have a such a good friend
  1508. 1508.
    >A feeling that has grown so familiar since coming to Equestria
  1509. 1509.
    >And one that was all but alien to you before that
  1510. 1510.
    >You break off the embrace, your mind turning to the task at hand
  1511. 1511.
"So... I didn't mention to Midnight Spire that I was planning this. I think he might already be asleep."
  1512. 1512.
    >She waves off your concerns
  1513. 1513.
"You can bed down in the basement tonight. I'll watch over you."
  1514. 1514.
    >You breathe a sigh of relief
  1515. 1515.
    >She hops off the stool, and starts walking to the hall
  1516. 1516.
    >You trail after her
  1517. 1517.
    >Twilight leads you downstairs to the basement, and after a few minutes she's arranged a bed for you
  1518. 1518.
    >The preparations made, there's nothing else to be done
  1519. 1519.
    >She blows out the lights, and lies down on the bed next to you
  1520. 1520.
    >You snuggle up to her under the cover of darkness, mentally preparing yourself for whatever lies ahead of you
  1521. 1521.
    "Goodnight, Twilight."
  1522. 1522.
    >You murmur
  1523. 1523.
    "Sweet dreams."
  1524. 1524.
    >She cheekily mutters back
  1525. 1525.
    >You chuckle softly
  1526. 1526.
    >With Twilight's warmth next to you, the accumulated exhaustion of the week pounces on you, and you swiftly drift off to sleep
  1527. 1527.

  1528. 1528.
