Expiry: Never

  1. The whiskers in the morning
  2. Of horses snoring tight
  3. Are rolling by in spring grass now
  4. As I look in your eyes
  5.
  6. I hold on to your peppermints
  7. And eat each oat you buy
  8. Your carrots warm and tender
  9. A lunch that I could not forsake
  10.
  11. 'Cause I'm your pony
  12. And you are my man
  13. Whenever you buy some oats
  14. I'll take all that I can
  15.
  16. ____
  17.
  18. O pretty mare! Our waifu and our bane!
  19. A bucket full of oats thou dost in us command.
  20. We hear thee nicker fair, dear mare,
  21. A mint horse, thief is she;
  22. And stand on guard, O pretty mare,
  23. We stand on guard for thee.
  24.
  25. ____
  26.
  27. >You are Lyra Heartstrings.
  28. >A mare on a mission.
  29. >...
  30. >Also, a mare stuck in a tree.
  31. >You have a robin in your magic, which is phase one, but now you're not entirely sure how to get down.
  32. >If only Anon were here.
  33. >He's not good at climbing either but he’s better than any pony you'd ever seen.
  34. >On trees, anyways.
  35. >You know entire blessings of unicorns that can have him beat when it comes to scaling mountainy slopes.
  36. >Maybe you should’ve taken Bonnie's grappely hook thingy.
  37. >Okay, no more stalling.
  38. >Maybe if you just...
  39. >You whiny as the ground comes up to hit you fast.
  40. >It takes every fiber of your concentration not to let go of the bird.
  41. >So begins phase two, the long limp of shame to Anon's house.
  42.
  43. >It's dangerous.
  44. >Your right foreleg leg is all but useless, your magic indisposed.
  45. >Gotta keep a hold of that bird.
  46. >Road apples, it looks and sounds very very upset with you.
  47. >What usually feels like a short trek seems to last for ages.
  48. >And to be fair, at the pace you’re going it might as well be.
  49. >You can almost hear the imaginary Bonnie in your head yelling at you for not going straight to the hospital, or chastizing you for your “dumb” plan in the first place.
  50. >The back of your mind is itching. Something is going to snatch you up.
  51. >It's all so scary, you don't even feel the pain in your leg anymore.
  52. >Ears twitch and eyes move to the tiniest sounds and movements.
  53. >I-it should be okay.
  54. >If anything happens you can...
  55. >All the sounds of the forest stop at once and not a moment after you feel something nearby.
  56. >The robin also seems to get the memo, now quiet as a mouse.
  57. >With a turn of the head in both directions, the feeling disappears.
  58. >It early sends you over the edge in panic.
  59. >Things only get unnaturally quiet when a predator is nearby.
  60. >It should be a good thing.
  61.
  62.
  63. >This means you're close to Anon's house.
  64. >But it doesn't make you feel any better.
  65. >The seeping dread is almost overwhelming until you spot Anon's house through a thicket of trees.
  66. >It's one of the reasons why you like coming out here so much.
  67. >You bring your nose down, to smell the area, and sure enough his scent is all over the place.
  68. >That gives just enough resolve to keep going.
  69. >Just a little m-
  70. >You whinny.
  71. >An unsteady buck lashes out when a figure, much larger than a pony jumps out to grab you.
  72. >Only with your injured leg, it causes you to fall flat on your face, causing you to let go of the robin.
  73. >You hear a deep laughter as the figure kneels down and pulls you to his chest.
  74. >"Whatchu got here, Lye?"
  75. >Cracking open an eye you see Anon anon cradling you in one arm and holding the bird in his other hand.
  76. >Thank the sun.
  77. >It didn't get away.
  78. >Phase three is a go.
  79. "Anon." You barely manage a nicker to greet him. "You scared me."
  80.
  81.
  82. >"Sorry, You didn't notice for once and I couldn't resist."
  83. >The human stands up.
  84. >You hook your good foreleg around his neck so you don't fall out and break something else.
  85. >The human hums to himself as he looks you over.
  86. >"You don't look so Good, Lye. Do you have to take a shit or something?"
  87. >You scrunch your muzzle.
  88. >How could he not notice your leg practically falling off?
  89. "My leg's hurt real bad, ‘Non. You should leave me behind before something tries to eat us."
  90. >The human looks down inspecting it, with a small frown.
  91. >Then he starts laughing.
  92. >And he doesn't stop laughing.
  93. >...
  94. "What's so funny? I could have died coming out here."
  95. >"Come on, Lye it's just a little scrape that'll bruise at best, you little horses get up in arms at the most retarded shit." He keeps cackling.
  96. >Leg injuries are nothing to scoff at! Ponies that have their legs hurt are usually picked off first or left alone to die.
  97. >You snort, looking away at him.
  98. >Here you are getting him a present, risking your life to do so, and he's laughing at you.
  99. >You pin your ears and it makes him stall to a light chucking.
  100.
  101.
  102. >He lowers his head to the wound, and you nearly flinch away when he softly kisses it.
  103. >"There, all better."
  104. >...It does kind of feel better. You didn't realize humans could do healing magic.
  105. >"What's up with the bird anyways."
  106. "I was trying to get you a snack to pay you back for those peppermints and carrots you always give me."
  107. >The human looks at the robin with newfound interest.
  108. >You shut your eyes as hard as you can and turn to bury your muzzle into Anon's neck.
  109. "You can go ahead and eat it now. Just make it quick."
  110. >There’s a flutter of wings and some frantic chirping.
  111. >Ohh Celestia, you're an accomplace to murder.
  112. >You honestly didn't think this far ahead.
  113. >Let’s see....
  114. >The name is going to have to change, Maybe something like Aryl.
  115. >With luck Anon will let you move out here with him.
  116. >Bonnie might know a thing or two about that whole secret identity business.
  117. >That means you two can still be friends, right?
  118. >Your ears twitch at a sound you don't expect.
  119. >The flapping of wings getting farther and farther.
  120.
  121. >Cracking an eye open you see it flying away.
  122. "What! After all that you let it go? I thought you liked eating birds."
  123. >Anon chuckles.
  124. >"I like chickens, quails, pheasants, and turkeys. Eating a robin is just plain gross, Lye."
  125. >There's a difference?
  126. >You scrunch your muzzle again.
  127. >Why are humans so weird?
  128. >He leans down again, this time kissing your cheek.
  129. >As the side of his face brushes against your whiskers your withers shudder at the odd sensation.
  130. >An odd sensation you don't think you mind.
  131. >You make an effort to lick him back, causing his small human snoot to scrunch.
  132. >"It still means a lot to me." He starts chuckling again, wiping his face with a sleeve. "I can say for sure none of you little horses have ever done something like this before."
  133. >You snort.
  134. ”Well, if it’s all the same, I think I’ll bring a banana for you next time.”
  135. >"I think I’d like that.“ He makes his way to his house, with you in his arms.
  136. >”Now come on, you silly pony. I got some bandages and stuff if you're really that worried about your leg."
  137.
  138. ____
  139.
  140. >You approach Lyra with a big sturdy rope in your hands.
  141. >Eyes dart from your hands and down the length of rope, fear and excitement hiding behind them.
  142. >Tentatively, she steps forward to smell and nudge it with her muzzle, ears pivoting.
  143. >She licks at you a soft nicker once she deems it safe.
  144. >"A-are you sure this hubble-"
  145. "Hobble," you correct, wiping the back of your hand on the hem of your shirt.
  146. >Gross, mare drool.
  147. >"Hobble training is gunna help? It sounds silly, Anon."
  148. "Yeah, yeah. Hold still," you lie.
  149. >You're not entirely sure if it'll work with Equestrian horses.
  150. >But Lyra has done weird horsey experiments with you, so it's only natural that you pay her back.
  151. >Besides, watching her panic every time she gets a leg caught on something or even the tiniest of sprains and scratches breaks your heart as much as it does hers.
  152. >Your little buddy is for smiles and hugs, after all.
  153. >You pull a basic loop into a slipknot and motion for Lyra to give you her hoof.
  154. >She does so and you catch her hoof with the rope.
  155. >As soon as it's pulled taught around her fetlock, her ears fall as she tries to draw her hoof back.
  156. >Again and again she tries, and her breathing hitches.
  157. >"Anon, you should leave me behind before something gets us." she begs with a pained whinny.
  158. >You snort into laughter.
  159. >Instead of firing it back, she just looks at you sadly.
  160. >Shit...
  161. >When you let the rope go, she sighs and all the tension in her body seems to evaporate.
  162. >Man, she's got it worse than you thought. You haven't even done the actual hobble training yet.
  163.
  164. ----
  165.
  166. >"cake! I want a big slice of cake!"
  167. >
  168. >the day hadn't started out well
  169. >Celestia's Spring sun shone especially bright that morning
  170. >earlier than usually you swear
  171. >there wasn't a cloud in the sky, clear blue across the whole horizon, exactly as the weather team had planned
  172. >even though you lay tensed, battened down, eyes sealed shut, you couldn't fall back to sleep
  173. >seemed like neither luna nor celestia was giving you a break
  174. >you had woken up on the wrong side of the bed but hey, at least you were still in bed and not on the floor
  175. >and with that little thought you had gotten up, like a big strong mare, hoping for a burst of energy...
  176. >five knots in your mane.
  177. >after what felt like an hour of dull tugging and pulling and plucking, wrenching and yanking, you finally defeated your own hair, an obnoxious set-back to an already bad start
  178. >tfw no husbando to brush your mane for you
  179. >the next thought that struck you was the immediate one: food, a big mare needs her feed, right?
  180. >the milk was spoiled, which you only found out after it gagged your throat and coated the surface of your tongue
  181. >not enough hay
  182. >barely any barley
  183. >couldn't find a carrot
  184. >not a single turnip turned up
  185. >and you were all out of oats (gotta remember to sneak by Linky's or Bon's and borrow some)
  186. >you were pretty bad about stocking your pantry but this was something
  187. >maybe you could bug some other pony for breakfast
  188. >a short trot over to your neighbor yielded nothing
  189. >no one was home and even though you probably could just walk in, the series of early morning defeats left you disheartened
  190. >your eyes hazed over as you languidly sauntered back home, focused only on your aching tummy
  191. >and then, when you knocked your head against the hard, timber frontdoor, you had an aching head to focus on too
  192. >resignation washed over your mind and body
  193. >"I should just go back to bed"
  194. >you stood there defeated, breathing short, pouty breaths from your flared nostrils
  195. >but a bit of spirit still welled in you
  196. >the noise from the early morning hustle hit your ears and they rotated instinctively towards town, reminding you
  197. >you had to perform for the princess today, three poems during the banquet for her visit
  198. >you loved performing at these little gatherings
  199. >you loved performing for Celestia
  200. >you loved performing for every esteemed guest which the whole town would come together to host, regardless of their status
  201. >everyone pitched in to prepare yesterday, how could you resign now, when the day just started?
  202. >to hell with this slump, you had to keep pulling, neck firm, head held high, ears forward, like a real mare
  203. >"cake! I want a big slice of cake!"
  204. >cake. that's what you wanted and that would make it all better
  205. >a sour day could always be fixed with a sweet pastry
  206. >with confidence that all would be well so long as you had your cake, you trotted towards town, with a resolved, prided stride
