"Dagnabit! What the hay?", suddenly said Rarity.
-
"Huh?" answered Applejack.
-
She repeated: "What the hay?" and then, with a great deal of disgust, she added, "What in Equestria is that thing supposed to be?"
-
Applejack raised her head. As always when she did so, the hat on it almost fell down—it would have done so if Applejack hadn't been used to it and wasn't able to balance it on her ears. On her turn, Rarity turned her eyes away from the mirror in front of which she was looking at herself.
-
On this particular evening, Rarity had planned an outing with her friends for quite some time—and the plans included going out together, so they were all supposed to be dressed up appropriately... and yet none of them looked happy or confident about it, because their friend Twilight Sparkle was trying something on.
-
Twilight was wearing a dress which had to be pink. Not dark red, not bright rose—pink. Just like many other things in her wardrobe. But not only did this have its typical color; it also had two more distinguishing marks. The first one was the fact that there were stars on it. Stars everywhere; the cloth looked almost solid with them because there were so many of them sewn onto it that it became a pattern, but in some areas they had been grouped together to form constellations—mostly, if not exclusively, Luna's. The last and most horrifying detail however was that all over the dress there was some kind of... something... that looked like hair. As far as could be seen from afar it had no particular color—it was brown or black maybe?—but Rarity's trained eyes were able to see that it wasn't fur, wool nor any other material usually used for clothes making; it seemed to be real... well, what else could Rarity say about it? Human hair! In every conceivable length and coloring. Long braids, curls, pony tails, dreadlocks, hair of all kinds—some looked natural, some fake. There were even strands that had been dyed green or blue.
-
This thing was clearly a work of passion from someone who loved fashion but hadn't the slightest idea about good taste. In fact it seemed to be an attempt at imitating some kind of "hairy" monster, but the maker had failed miserably because it only looked hideous and pathetic and the hairs themselves didn't even look like they were supposed to be hairs: no one would be able to recognize their structure. Rarity knew that there was a particular breed of dogs with hair instead of fur, but those hairs still had the same qualities as normal mammalian hair; this stuff was very different.
-
At first glance it looked like the kind of thing you could find at the local "horseplay", if you were looking for a costume and didn't have time or inspiration to make one yourself, but when Rarity realized that it hadn't been made as a parody or in jest (unlike most monstrous disguises) she was unable to find any other explanation than the fact that this was meant to be serious.
-
She shuddered at the thought and felt a need for reassurance, so she turned her eyes on Applejack, who still didn't seem as shocked as Rarity hoped she would be; she was just tilting her head to the right in confusion.
-
"AJ! Please tell me that you don't think we can wear this without causing a diplomatic incident!" said Rarity imploringly. Applejack raised an eyebrow, but before she could answer, Pinkie Pie burst into tears.
-
Rainbow Dash was looking away from the others while muttering to herself: "This is the worst day of my life..."
-
At that point, Fluttershy couldn't hide a tiny, almost imperceptible giggle, and her friends all turned their eyes on her—except Twilight, who still hadn't paid attention to them because she was too busy trying to turn right (while standing in front of the mirror with that horrible dress on) and kept making "woah!" sounds every time she started to fall down, as usual.
-
"What is it?" asked Pinkie Pie while wiping her eyes; she seemed to have decided that there was no reason why she shouldn't enjoy a good cry.
-
Fluttershy blushed: it wasn't the first time something like this happened to her. "Uh, nothing! Nothing! I just..." She tried to smile in a friendly way—after all, Rarity didn't want to hurt Twilight's feelings, so she should at least try to be gentle...
-
"Please tell me it isn't as bad as it seems." said Rarity.
