Expiry: Never

  1. This story is something I'm more proud of. I only ever posted this short, but I've spent a long time worldbuilding for this universe. At some point (hopefully soon) I'll start posting the story that this initial prompt turned into.
  2. ##
  3. >Celestia stood on her balcony, and raised the Sun
  4. >Of course, the phrase 'raise the sun' was misleading, as she was actually turning the planet on its axis
  5. >She shot a beam of concentrated mana directly above, to one of the many Nomadic Stars that Luna had control over
  6. >Thanks to her thaumic sensitivity, Celestia could feel the Star split up her mana into six beams aimed towards the next nearest Stars
  7. >The next Stars to receive mana would then sent out five of their own beams
  8. >And so on until every Nomad in the sky was connected to her
  9. >Then, she would ask the Stars to give the planet's rotation a push
  10. >And the Sun would rise
  11. >And the Stars would whisper in her mind, in an ancient language she couldn't understand
  12.
  13. >"Power source detected. Activating mesh network. Starting operating system."
  14. >"The orbital correction array is operating in emergency mode. Node 0796 is in critical condition. Multiple nodes require maintenance immediately."
  15. >"The array is unable to maintain normal rotation autonomously. In emergency mode, the array can only be used manually."
  16. >"Please input desired kinetic energy in joules to be applied."
  17.
  18. >Legends often spoke of the incredible power of the Nomadic Stars
  19. >Celestia could feel the intense energy hidden in each Star whenever she connected
  20. >She had no idea that every Star had an atom sized black hole
  21. >Or that her magical energy would be directed into the black holes, and be spit out as intense kinetic energy carefully channeled into Earth's orbit
  22. >Nopony had any idea that the ancient satellites that helped the planet spin were very close to failing
  23. >Or that they were incredibly lucky every node was still online after thousands of years without maintenance
  24. >How could they? They thought the machines and the stars of distant galaxies were the same, only separated by distance
  25. >One day very soon, however, a node would fail
  26. >More stress would be put on the rest, and soon another would go offline
  27.
  28. >The orbital correction array would collapse, and the planet would spin slower and slower
  29. >One day the rotation would stop,
  30. >and in Equestria,
  31. >a mare would have her ancient wish fulfilled
  32. >that the night would last forever
  33.
  34. >"Power source detected. Activating mesh network. Starting operating system."
  35. >"SEVERE: NODE 0796 GENERAL FAILURE. DO NOT USE. TECHNICIANS ARE BEING SCRAMBLED."
  36. >Celestia didn't understand the whispers this time, just like every time she raised the Sun.
  37. >She channeled the same incredible amount of energy required to turn the planet that she did every day.
  38. >"SEVERE: NODE 0796 INTAKE CAPACITOR FAILURE. DO NOT CHARGE."
  39. >It seemed the Stars were talkative, today. They did that sometimes.
  40. >"SEVERE: NODE 0796 UNABLE TO FORM ENERGY MATRIX."
  41. >Why wasn't her mana being sent to the other Stars? Was she not providing enough?
  42. >"NODE 0796 CONTAINMENT SYSTEMS FAILURE. LOSS OF GRAVITATIONAL MICROSINGULARITY. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE OMEGA-THIRTEEN ACTIVATED."
  43.
  44. >Celestia tried to push even more thaumic energy into the ancient satellite.
  45. >There was a feeling of magical backlash - something that could be fatal with her alicorn strength.
  46. >Before she could ground her spell she was frozen in place from the feedback of her magic being shorted back in on itself.
  47. >She passed out from her brain trying to comprehend a collapsing singularity via her magical 'touch'.
  48. >The Stars were screaming at her, and while unconscious she could finally understand the meaning of their words.
  49. >"NODE 0796 OFFLINE. EMERGENCY SELF DESTRUCT DETECTED. NEW NODE MUST BE LAUNCHED ASAP."
  50. >"CLOSEST NODE MANUFACTURER TO YOUR LOCATION: GRAVITON-USA/BUNKER G, COLORADO SPRINGS, USA. COORDINATES 38°4433N 104°5054W."
  51.
  52. >The next thing Celestia knew she was waking up in a hospital bed, and she couldn't feel her magic
  53. >She didn't care, though
  54. >She also had a compulsion to travel to some place called Bunker G.
  55. >She could feel what direction it was located in her bones, like it was calling out to her
  56. >Her goal was to arrive at the provided coordinates
  57. >This task had the highest priority over all others, overriding most conscious thought
  58. >Omega-13 had been declared, and according to the ancient guidelines, the lives of engineered sapient beings were of no consequence compared to planetary rotation ceasing
