Interlude 3
-
“Tsk, tsk. Naughty little girl.”
-
>“She’s not in her right mind. I know that she knows better than this.”
-
“You make it sound like we ought to stop her. This is going to work to our advantage.”
-
>“We should stop her, but we can’t. She’d only become more fearful.”
-
“Ooh, that’d be fun to watch.”
-
>“We aren’t going to do that.”
-
“I was just voicing my opinion. I didn’t say that it’s what I want in the long run.”
-
>“And what do you want in the long run?”
-
“Well, there are some people who have probably been wondering where I’ve gone, so I ought to get back in touch with them.”
-
>“How long are you planning on complaining about that?”
-
“How long are you planning on holding out on me? I’ve got rights that you have to respect!”
-
>“We are working on it. Returning to business, this is a pot calling a kettle black. We are not in a position to criticize, even if we could. I propose that we move on.”
-
>“Agreed. There isn’t much point in continuing on this subject. Back to the lack of information we had going into this-”
-
-
-
“I told you, I didn’t know!”
-
>“I’m not questioning that. I’m questioning my own judgment.”
-
“It’s a bit late for that, don’t you think?”
-
>“Perhaps. But that doesn’t resolve any of my doubts. Did we choose the right hosts?”
-
“Minimal culture shock, someone who’s already familiar with her, dietary preferences, easy access to information… they met all the criteria, even though I dropped the ball on that last one. The problem isn’t the hosts. It’s the guests.”
-
>“Don’t you dare speak of- No. No, you’re right. Years of grooming and preparation, and it hasn’t made any difference. I might as well have done this when she was still a filly. That might have been better, actually. She’d only be scared, not so… bitter. So intolerant. I don’t know whether to say she’s failing us, or that I’ve failed her.”
