Someone Else's Song

Expiry: Never

  1. 1.
    >"Come on, Anon, sing it. You were going to."
  2. 2.
"No, Twilight, that's cringe. You know I can't do that."
  3. 3.
    >Curse that unicorn and her curiosity. Stubborn, relentless curiosity.
  4. 4.
    >Nobody else is here to hear you this late, so in Twilight's eyes her human familiar has no excuse to be shy if it's just her.
  5. 5.
    >She can even frame it as a study of your culture or whatever.
  6. 6.
    >The mare comes out of the shadows of the great tree library to the moonlit balcony you're occupying now, sitting on your usual cushion with a pony-sized acoustic guitar in your hands, so tiny it could pass as a bigger ukulele to you.
  7. 7.
    >Just when you were feeling a bit melancholic looking at the moon, the shining jewel of tonight's clear sky, your master has chosen to make her appearance.
  8. 8.
    >While you were getting all nostalgic about your world, she's apparently been quietly approaching you as if you were an exotic songbird gracing her humble abode with its song - until you've finally noticed her.
  9. 9.
"I-it's an instrumental anyway," you puff your cheeks.
  10. 10.
    >"Uh-huh," Twilight dismisses with a coy smile. "That's why you've been humming along for almost two minutes now?"
  11. 11.
    >That's how long she's been peeping at your hazy soul?
  12. 12.
    >Curse this place's relaxing vibes. Was it really that obvious that you're so entranced by the stars above that she could just be your audience without you ever taking notice of her?
  13. 13.
    >It's always like that with this pony. You haven't been around for long but she already knows all your weak spots. Well, she's your summoner, so you're probably connected in some way? Some magical, occult way.
  14. 14.
    >You'd prefer to think that's the case. Strange to admit it, but you got rather attached to this spellcaster by this point. Aside from your periodic blues you like it here in Equestria, living with just her and her pet dragon.
  15. 15.
    >A warm early summer breeze washes over you both once Twilight takes a seat next to you.
  16. 16.
    >Not a single pony-made sound outside. Everyone's fast asleep. You bet Spike is also so deep into his slumber you could sing an opera here and he wouldn't notice. Not that you intend to sing anything.
  17. 17.
    >Well, unless Twilight continues to insist.
  18. 18.
    >"I won't judge you, you know. Ponies sing all the time, it's a natural thing to do."
  19. 19.
    "It's not for us humans."
  20. 20.
    >Shouldn't have said that. Drawing that line between you only makes her more interested in exactly HOW is it for 'you humans'.
  21. 21.
    >"Sounded like it was pretty natural to you just a moment ago. Just like playing this thing with human hands," she nods at your guitar. "I won't believe you if you tell me you've never performed for an audience. Ever since I got you this thing, you..."
  22. 22.
    >Her train of thoughts seems to have had an emergency stop for a moment and her eyes are now looking past you, somewhere far beyond.
  23. 23.
    "What?"
  24. 24.
    >"I mean, it's curious that you also have songs that can be performed with this particular instrument. You can't expect me to not be at least a little bit curious, can you?"
  25. 25.
    >She got that right.
  26. 26.
    >Obviously, if it's for her research then there's no real reason for you to refuse.
  27. 27.
    >It's true that ever since she has summoned you by complete accident, her interest in you, an actual otherworldly entity, has been only growing.
  28. 28.
    >To think that instead of some magical sprite or a levitating sentient book Twilight's spell simply yoinked you out of your realm. She just wanted to have a magical assistant for night sessions when Spike can't help her.
  29. 29.
    >So yeah, you can understand what motivates her to do extensive research on you at any opportunity.
  30. 30.
    >But, if you know anything about Twilight by now, it's also pretty damn obvious that her current request is not just for research.
  31. 31.
    >The way this pony is leaning against the balcony's frame and looking at you, this whole situation - it can't be anything other than her asking you to sing for her as a person to pony.
  32. 32.
    >Or maybe even something else? No, you won't read too much into it.
  33. 33.
    >You have enough problems fighting the inner cringe to add any sort of romantic undertones to this situation on top of it.
  34. 34.
    >Not that a pony like her would be interested in a human like you and vice versa. Or, rather, that's what you'd assume.
  35. 35.
    >Being around this unicorn you couldn't help but notice that her interest in you goes past just scientific curiosity.
  36. 36.
    >Her gaze moving from your miniature guitar to your eyes, back and forth, calm, safe.
  37. 37.
    >Her slight smile, encouraging, soft, friendly. Wind in her mane, soothing, protective.
  38. 38.
    >She only wants to hear you sing. It is as simple as that.
  39. 39.
    "Well, if it's for you..."
  40. 40.
    >She didn't expect that kind of reply and it makes her smile form fully. In the moonlight her eyes glisten with anticipation and for a moment your breath is stolen by this kind of attention.
  41. 41.
    >The kind you've never got anywhere else in your life.
  42. 42.
    >The pony nods to acknowledge that your compromise is acceptable, and says nothing to not interrupt her subject by accident.
  43. 43.
    >It's all up to you now.
  44. 44.
    >Your hands do the thing on their own. To be honest, there's not a lot to it, for reasons Twilight doesn't have to know.
  45. 45.
    >Eyes closing, you start off quietly once you get to the right chords.
  46. 46.
~"Right now I have to get back home, back from the sad day out. Missing you forever, yes, I shout. Yes I, yes I, yes I am. Yes I, yes I, yes I am."~
  47. 47.
    >The secret is simple. You've got no clue if you're singing the right words.
  48. 48.
    >Or if the music is correct at all.
  49. 49.
    >In truth, you've simply been trying different chords out until something resembling what you remember from that song came to be.
  50. 50.
    >Twilight will never know. Although, being a smart little pony, she probably suspects it. And probably doesn't really care.
  51. 51.
~"I'm going to the Lakeshore drive, I think I see your face, now I'm looking for it every place. Yes I, yes I, yes I am. Yes I, yes I, yes I am..."~
  52. 52.
    >It is what remains in your head. A song once heard, stuck in there partially. Now recreated in Equestria. Nobody knows how it really goes.
  53. 53.
    >You are an ancient folk singer, last of his tribe, sharing an artifact of an infinitely distant culture with a curious researcher under the unfamiliar stars.
  54. 54.
    >You are the only one who knows how horribly wrong this is.
  55. 55.
    >If only she knew, she'd just laugh at you.
  56. 56.
    >But the way you sing it now, it's gonna be forever the right version in this world. Your corrupted gift to the pony closest to you.
  57. 57.
    >It seems that she appreciates it. Twilight's smile is constant now and her gaze is once again far off into the sky.
  58. 58.
    >Still playing some chords you bring her back to reality:
  59. 59.
    "That's all I really remember."
  60. 60.
    >"It's beautiful."
  61. 61.
    >Not really, no. It was like, passable at best. But whatever she wants to believe.
  62. 62.
    >Twilight sighs wistfully, like she's inspired by your unsure attempts at self-expression or something.
  63. 63.
    >The night is still silent aside from you strumming idly.
  64. 64.
    >Feeling slightly bittersweet, you switch to an even more melancholic melody. That one was harder to reconstruct just from memory, but luckily for you, it had a classic guitar version.
  65. 65.
    >A sad, sad version of it.
  66. 66.
    >Twilight's ears are all tensed up even if she isn't showing her interest in any other way. She's so afraid of scaring you now that you're doing this on your own.
  67. 67.
    >This one you don't even remember past one line, but still.
  68. 68.
~"I love you, todoite, kono omoi..."~
  69. 69.
    >And you just hum the rest. Yep, that's it, the whole thing you've managed to salvage from your memory.
  70. 70.
    >So much memories associated with this one. And nothing to show for it.
  71. 71.
    >Come to think of it, she had the same voice as Twilight too... Well, best not to dwell on this right now.
  72. 72.
    >Twilight can't keep a calm facade anymore, hearing unfamiliar words.
  73. 73.
    >"Ooh," she coos smugly. "Is that neighponese I'm hearing?"
  74. 74.
"I guess you ponies call it that, yeah?"
  75. 75.
    >"Astonishing."
  76. 76.
    >Not really, but then again, it's her call. Twilight is too generous with her reactions tonight, this can't be that fascinating, right?
  77. 77.
    >To test it out, you start up another one. This time the unicorn doesn't pretend to be indifferent and her eyes never leave you as you try your best not to shout, as it goes.
  78. 78.
    ~"O-oooh, moya oborona!"~
  79. 79.
    >"I don't recognize that language," Twilight uses a moment of your hesitation to comment on it.
  80. 80.
    >To be honest, you don't remember a single word past this. Just the emotions it carried.
  81. 81.
"It's also neighponese," you nod to her.
  82. 82.
    >"No it's not."
  83. 83.
    >Twilight laughs at the notion of you so confidently stating something she knows isn't true, and you can't help but chuckle too.
  84. 84.
    >Now Anon, hit her with Lumière too!
  85. 85.
    >Wait, no, you never even played that game. Not a single thing aside from basic motif in your head from that one. Oh well.
  86. 86.
    >Instead, you reach for your old favorite.
  87. 87.
~"All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray..."~
  88. 88.
    >"Oh, I've heard you sing that one before."
  89. 89.
    >Of course she has, it's impossible not to. The thing has been following you everywhere for years and you hum it every time you do any sort of chores for your master.
  90. 90.
    >Once again you see no reason to continue beyond that first line even though this one you know by heart.
  91. 91.
    >There's another one you can try out on this pony, who is now fully committed to be your audience, her full attention just on you, projected from less than an arm reach.
  92. 92.
    >Did she get closer while you were doing this?
  93. 93.
    >You almost hear her excited breathing as you start another attempt at remembering something, sung over some random bullshit that resembles the melody you remember.
  94. 94.
    ~"Oh, I don't believe that my world isn't real, and I wouldn't take you from yours..."~
  95. 95.
    >"This one feels familiar somehow."
  96. 96.
    >Twilight doesn't even wait to comment anymore, she's so confident now. You nod to her.
  97. 97.
"Well, it's from that movie, so..."
  98. 98.
    >From Twilight's movie, doesn't she remember? You've almost said that, stupid.
  99. 99.
    >"What's a movie?"
  100. 100.
    "Never mind."
  101. 101.
    >You have to change the subject quick before she gets too curious about this.
  102. 102.
    >So, the next best thing is, of course, to remember yet another song.
  103. 103.
    >Twilight doesn't push the subject, instead paying all her attention to the music, hungry to absorb all of this rare experience.
  104. 104.
~"Heavenly shades of night are falling, it's twilight time, outta the mist your voice is calling, it's twilight time..."~
  105. 105.
    >"That's not a real song," the pony both smirks and frowns, a bit confused.
  106. 106.
    >Obviously she'd said that. She will never know for sure.
  107. 107.
    "No, no, it's real."
  108. 108.
    >"You've just made it up."
  109. 109.
    >With a smug smile on her muzzle and eyes lidded just a bit, the mare's silhouette in the moon light is especially captivating.
  110. 110.
"It's actually a hundred years old," you insist and continue. ~"When purple something-something marks the end of day-"~
  111. 111.
    >"Now you're just messing with me."
  112. 112.
    "No, really."
  113. 113.
    >Twilight's playful giggle makes you realize that it'd be more fun to push the other way. Wasn't it you who wanted to see some romantic undertones here?
  114. 114.
"Well, alright, I mostly made it up right now, just for you. Satisfied?"
  115. 115.
    >Even when this makes Twilight look away you see her rolling her eyes with her smile still on.
  116. 116.
    >"Yes, quite."
  117. 117.
    >She realizes she sounds a bit weak and clears her throat.
  118. 118.
"As you can see it's not much, but you asked for it."
  119. 119.
    >"Don't sell yourself short," she's still looking away. "It was nice."
  120. 120.
"What, the three lines per song with the wrong chords?"
  121. 121.
    >You snicker loudly but Twilight doesn't pay that any mind.
  122. 122.
    >"No, just generally, you..." she gathers strength for a second. "S-serenading for me like that."
  123. 123.
    >It takes all your willpower to not laugh at this, and not just because it's a ridiculous statement to hear.
  124. 124.
    >Just the way she says it, it's most likely the first time she has said the word 'serenading' out loud in her life.
  125. 125.
    >Needless to say she won't be making eye contact with you any time soon.
  126. 126.
    >Your own gaze also returns to the stars.
  127. 127.
    >Maybe you have to tell her after all.
  128. 128.
"Those aren't my songs, you know. I'm just making this up as I play, it's not really how they go."
  129. 129.
    >For a while, no reply is heard from Twilight. But you know she's thinking about what you said right now. She takes this seriously.
  130. 130.
    >Some silent seconds later, you hear her reply:
  131. 131.
    >"Well, they are now. I will never hear the originals, so this is how they go for me from now on. And everything else will be a poor imitation, even the correct versions."
  132. 132.
    >What a statement to give as a researcher. Even if it sounds a bit flattering to you, obviously.
  133. 133.
    >But Twilight also realizes she just said something profound.
  134. 134.
    >"Oh, maybe I should write that down," she finally turns you to, now that the mood has been reset.
  135. 135.
    "Yeah, before you forget it."
  136. 136.
    >Maybe it's your cue to get her supplies, but before you even move a muscle, Twilight corrects the course:
  137. 137.
    >"Actually, I'd rather stay here for now," she nods to you. "Thoughts come and go, but this music is in the moment."
  138. 138.
    >Your eyes find hers and the few seconds you spend stuck looking at each other feel like forever.
  139. 139.
    >A strange mystical force dictates that Twilight's big, curious and sincere eyes are enchanted with force that keeps you drowning in them.
  140. 140.
    >This has never happened before and it's only when you both realize you forgot to breathe for a moment the spell becomes broken.
  141. 141.
    >In a moment of clarity, Twilight acts.
  142. 142.
    >With a flash of her horn she materializes a scroll and a quill before her and takes a note, producing a small but furious scribbling hurricane over the paper for a moment.
  143. 143.
    >"That one I couldn't resist," she comments after teleporting the items away.
  144. 144.
    >A small blush can barely be seen on Twilight's cheeks. You don't know if it's a product of her making an excuse for herself, or your weird glance thing just now.
  145. 145.
    >To ease her tension you simply nod in approval of her actions.
  146. 146.
"Sometimes the thoughts are also important. And there's no music at the moment too, so..."
  147. 147.
    >"Well, then I'd like to hear more."
  148. 148.
    >You don't object to that anymore. Seems that you've accepted your fate, bearer of the unfinished songs with improvised music.
  149. 149.
    >In acknowledgement of Twilight's request you start strumming again, making no melody in particular. Something resembling...yes.
  150. 150.
    ~"Koi no hm-hmm hm-hm-hmm, kono ge-e-emu hm hm hm-hm-hmmm"~
  151. 151.
    >It's not that you're looking up to the skies again because you're feeling that moody, you're actually concentrating super hard on remembering even the faintest bits of lyrics to this song.
  152. 152.
    >It doesn't help that you're blushing now because of how stupid your attempts at Japanese sound coming out of your mouth.
  153. 153.
    >But you weren't prepared for something to make you blush even harder.
  154. 154.
    >On your shirt-clad right arm you suddenly feel the pony's pristine coat.
  155. 155.
    >Now your eyes are glued to the sky for real.
  156. 156.
    >If you attempted to move your head even a little bit right now, you'd see Twilight leaning against you, with what feels like her ear brushing slightly against your strained neck.
  157. 157.
    >You feel a slight sigh coming out of her, so close to you now, as you struggle to keep the music flowing.
  158. 158.
    >Forget wondering how she even got so close to you without you noticing, what are you supposed to think in this situation?
  159. 159.
    >Maybe you don't, actually. Maybe you simply accept it and never question it. Just your master being a bit eccentric, yes.
  160. 160.
    >She IS your summoner, so, by no rule in particular, she's allowed to do things like that. Makes perfect sense to you. Moving on...
  161. 161.
~"Mitsumete hm hm-hm hm hm hm-hm-hmmm... Tomete koi no hm-hm hm-hm-hmmm... Listen to my heart..."~
  162. 162.
    >No, wait. This is the first genuinely romantic moment of your life and you're going with THIS?
  163. 163.
    >Your incoherent mumbling just sounds so stupid right now, you expect Twilight to cackle at your wavering, pathetic voice any moment now.
  164. 164.
    >In reality, nothing but soft breathing is coming from the blind spot in your vision, all directed to stars above still.
  165. 165.
    >Your arm moves stiffly, afraid to bother its occupant. Even though it's just a pony head against your shoulder.
  166. 166.
    >But try as you might, even the longest songs come to a conclusion. And after this one does, nothing is left to really say.
  167. 167.
    "Sorry."
  168. 168.
    >You can practically FEEL Twilight chuckle with the very hairs on your arm, like you're some kind of insect now.
  169. 169.
    >"What for?"
  170. 170.
"I-I told you it was cringe."
  171. 171.
    >Still you allow yourself no head movement. This moment can't be dispelled by something as trivial as you moving. You can't allow that.
  172. 172.
    >"If you say so. But don't you think it's also great?"
  173. 173.
    "What about it is great?"
  174. 174.
    >Yeah, you feel like killing yourself out of shame for ruining such a moment with your horrible weeb whimpering and she's saying it's GREAT? You're obviously not seeing what she's seeing here.
  175. 175.
    >A moment of hesitation fills your anticipating ears with night sounds and Twilight's calm breathing.
  176. 176.
    >"This moment. Those songs might be someone else's, but this moment of sharing them with me, it's only yours."
  177. 177.
    >Your Twilight condition arm sensors detect that the pony's breath is once again abated.
  178. 178.
    >"Or, I guess, ours?" she corrects herself shyly.
  179. 179.
    >You almost want to say something in return, but notice that you're smiling. Trying to capture this smile for longer, you remain silent.
  180. 180.
    >In that silence you hear Twilight summoning her scroll and quill again.
  181. 181.
    >The scratching is even faster but a bit less confident than the first time.
  182. 182.
    >What makes you finally turn your head towards the pony leaning against you is hearing a barely audible "Bingo!" coming out of her mouth the moment she teleports the scroll away once again.
  183. 183.
    >Your curious glance is met with Twilight staring back at you with a smile.
  184. 184.
    >"That's a report to Celestia ready for this week," she boasts proudly.
  185. 185.
    >This being her sudden takeaway from this moment finally opens the floodgates for you.
  186. 186.
    >Twilight laughs together with you.
  187. 187.
    >The two of you are laughing under the brightest moon without a care in the world.
  188. 188.
    >This melody of two voices in unison is easily the best song of tonight.
